General Discussion / Changes
« on: September 19, 2020, 09:00:29 AM »
Well it has been a wild couple of years.
Good. Tons of work .....bad no time to surf as in zero days off self employed
good saved enough to buy a house  where up in the mountains near Bass lake .....bad had to evacuate due to creek fire  now still busy at work all my hard board are up at the house.    Still working in Orange County

Thinking of buying a used beater standup surf board that I can leave down in OC all the time.  Or  Just leave my oldest board where I stay. no place really  to leave it safely where I stay . So it’s risky. A bit  Or buy a used soft cheap wave storm  ( can’t find one anywhere which I thought they would be all over weird)

other thought is to buy an inflatable that I could take to the lake on 4 wheel drive trails around me and surf it when I am down in oc it would be my take everywhere in the back of my pickup board ,  My questions.
Are what to do?
Do inflatables surf worth a darn?
Where could I find a used inexpensive. Soft board such as a wave storm?
What are your suggestions?
In the last 2 years I have been in the surf maybe 4 or 5 times skills have seriously eroded.  I want to change that.  Get back to my roots

The other thing is and this is just a rAnt. Every time I come down for work  I drive by the beach in Carlsbad  and Encinitas and they are packed you can’t find a parking space.  It’s a wtf moment for me.

Random / Retiring But where?
« on: February 10, 2019, 10:03:03 PM »
Well  getting time to retire.  But it is going to be a challenge.  I spent the heart and soul and  27 years of my career. Building a business. Finally got there only to have a MF partner steal it out from under me leaving me with little to nothing to show for my the. Bulk of my life’s work.  So I found my self starting over at 55 with nothing.  Now 10 years later  I am looking down the barrel of retirement.  At that time lost the house in the recession.
The thing is I have lived in so cal since 1964 the same year I learned to surf.    Now I am thinking about retiring. And have scraped together a paltry down payment. And am looking to buy a house. Most likely out of state   I would like to be able to paddle. But maybe  more along some rivers or lake.  Looking at Oregon or Washington  maybe. Maybe along the coast. So what are your ideas on where? Given this is going to be a low budget affair?

Gear Talk / New leashes and ?
« on: July 18, 2018, 10:15:42 PM »
What do you all think of those new braided leashes.   Sup worthy? Or not?   What do you do to stop your leash from dragging when paddling for a wave?

Gear Talk / Recommend a new board
« on: November 03, 2017, 02:28:26 PM »
I am thinking of a new board for surfing  I am 64 250  surfed since 64. Like many have some issues.  So stability is key.  So is board weight.  That being said I don't want a barge.     So what are you reccomendations.  Cost is an issue. Thinking around 10 /32

SUP General / how long do you keep your boards?
« on: October 27, 2017, 05:20:23 PM »
I am in a dilemma I want a much lighter board but have a hard time selling/parting with my  old boards.  Truth be told my first kings I surfed to day and was uncomfortable with the width.  It weighs in a 27 lbs is 10'3 x 34"  I also have my c4 which was gift to me form my wife but it s 30lbs and frankly I can barely carry it up the  bluff at the end of a session.      finally there is my new kings but it is 28 lbs  also  and it surfs much better than the other 2   but its s still heavy.

so was a the boardwalks factory sale today  picked a brand new  Sirena for my wife for 300  it has  never been ridden but  must have had a fall and has a couple of very minor dings. it is 10'4 and only weighs 25lbs.

s I also saw a kraken  that was 11'  and looked very surf able in a cruiser sort of way    but couldn't bring my self to part  with the cash..

so ai m thinking I would like a pretty light 22-23 lb  very surf able  10'3   and maybe  getting a longer 11ish  board for cruise and surf.  but  I want them to be LIGHT!!

maybe have sun nova build me a 10'3creek model?  what would you do and what can you do with the least cash?

SUP General / old movies
« on: September 11, 2017, 07:24:50 PM »
So was watching  Ride the wild Surf. a pretty corny surf flick  but the waves were north shore Hawaii in 1962 The stunt guys surfers were
Mickey Dora,Greg Noll and Butch Van Artsdale. at one point they all ride the same  wave pretty big  on old school long boards no leashes.  It was kinda of a trip to watch Dora  surf with feet roughly parallel and then slip the board sideways.  His style is so distinctive.  you can't help but notice it.  Way Cool

SUP General / SHARK WEEK
« on: July 27, 2017, 09:13:11 PM »
ahh  I was watching and I came away with a couple of interesting thoughts. First they are calling LA  shark city  hmm The theory behind that  is that since the seals were put on the endangered  species list their population has doubled.   so the  great white population has also doubled  BUT  the hunting grounds remains the same size  so the really big girls and guys 14' plus are  chasing little ones 12 -14 footers  out and they are coming to  LA   But here is my spin on it I don't see a whole lot of seals around so what are they gonna eat?  Probably proners.  after all they have to adapt to survive   isn't That party of evolution?  What are your thoughts?
