Gear Talk / SUP Sports fin doesn't secure
« on: September 29, 2018, 07:32:26 PM »
I have a SUP Sports Wardog center fin off a Hammer I used to own.  Tried mounting the fin on another board (Hoe Nalu), but it doesn't secure. The screw tightens down, but the fin is still loose in the fin box, freely moving up/down the fin box.  Comparing the fin base where the screw goes in, the Wardog fin is deeper than my other fin, thus despite tightly screwed to the nut, is still free to move around in the fin box.

Does this fin need to be cut down/sanded down?
Has others had this problem?

Gear Talk / Using paddle shaft as handle carrying off balance board
« on: December 06, 2016, 09:48:19 PM »
My board is heavy and the handle is off center, so it's a pain carrying it by the inserted handle.  Want to add loops of cord onto the board so I can use the paddle shaft as a handle. See this thread:
http://www.standupzone.com/forum/index.php/topic,28566.0.html

2 Questions:
1) Is the paddle handle strong/sturdy enough to carry a heavy board in this manner?
My Ron House 12'6" is pretty heavy (over 30#)

2) I have EZ Plugs by Surfco, which has a peel off adhesive backing, but I don't have the 'glue' that it's sometimes supplied with.  What type of "glue" or adhesive can I use to glue the EZ Plug to my board?  Can I use SuperGlue on the board?

SoCal / Newport Bay--need PFD?
« on: December 12, 2015, 07:10:02 PM »
Is the PFD requirement strictly enforced inside Newport Bay (NAC to Pavillion)?
Will be paddling there tomorrow, and rather not wear one.

thanks

SoCal / Long Beach (Alamitos Bay)--where to launch?
« on: December 01, 2014, 10:17:36 PM »
I'll be in Long Beach this wkend, at the Marine Stadium.  Looks to be near Alamitos Bay.  Any suggestions on where to launch?
Looks like no surfing beaches nearby (Seal Beach?). Sup surfing would be my first choice, but can go for a flat water paddle inside the bay/harbor also.

Any suggestions on where to launch?
thanks

Gear Talk / BARK--new noses
« on: July 20, 2013, 09:39:32 PM »
Saw a new Bark in Hawaii at the July 4 Da Hui North Shore Paddleboard Race.  It had a softer displacement nose (like many of the newer race board designs), very different from all other Bark sharp vertical, cutting canoe style noses.
Wondering if this is his new shape, or a one off custom.
Haven't read/seen any pics (Bark website doesn't have any updates).

Anyone seen/heard of new developments?

SoCal / South OC--Newport Coast--where to paddle?
« on: May 17, 2013, 10:12:46 PM »
I will be near the Marriot Newport Coast this weekend.  Is there a nearby launch/paddle friendly spot?  Not looking for a secret reef to surf, but a easy entry/exit with nearby parking for touring/distance paddle.  How is Crystal Cove?

The Shape Shack / Weight of glassing
« on: May 01, 2013, 10:01:05 PM »
I am having a board shaped for me: 12'6x31x5--planing hull, touring/surfy shape (think Bark Expedition style).
I know it's a trade off with glassing more vs. weight

1) What is recommended glassing (E glass) schedule?
2) How much weight difference, say between 6oz x 2  vs 4.oz x 2 ?   in the finished product.
3) Any guesses at how much this board would weigh, if I went 6oz x 2 top and bottom?

thanks

Gear Talk / Gladiator fin shaved!
« on: March 30, 2013, 07:28:55 PM »
Surfing (ankle slappers) a shallow reef at low tide today on my Fanatic Fly 12'6".  My fin catches a high point on the reef and shaved off the corner:(

Is this repairable?  Would fiberglass be used to 'build up' the defect?

Gear Talk / GPS watch--accurate for board speed, or arm swing?
« on: January 10, 2013, 08:35:17 PM »
I have a Garmin wristwatch GPS.  Was wondering....does the arm swing/paddle pull of your wrist GPS get recorded as the speed? or is it the speed of the board? How does the GPS watch work? Does it avg the distance over a period of time (such that arm swing/paddle pull does not register)?

Also, how much lag is there?  e.g. if I'm paddling, then stop to look at my GPS, how much lag time is accurate?

Lastly, the calories burned on the GPS watch is (I assume) calculated for runners.  Does paddling induce more or less calorie output, compared to running?

thanks

SUP General / Night paddle--Redondo Beach, CA. inside King Harbor?
« on: November 11, 2012, 09:57:16 PM »
There's a current thread about night paddling, but I'm inquiring specifically about King Harbor.

1) Is it legal to night paddle inside the harbor? (I paddle here during daylight)
2) What type of lighting is required?
3) Anyone done it/does it on a regular basis?

thanks
