SUP General / Rain & Bacteria
« on: January 11, 2017, 10:50:27 AM »
What's your opinion on surfing in the rain or within 3 days of rain. I know they suggest 3 days after for the bacteria levels to lower but wanted to know your opinion. Sometimes the best swells are right after or even during. So Cal is about to hit with rain for a few days but the surf is too good to pass up. We normally receive only a few inches of rain a year, but this year we're getting a lot more which is great because we need it. I got sick two months ago after rain.  I've been a couple times so I guess I'm 1 for 3 on getting sick after rain. I know they don't let the seals train in the water for 3 days due to so many guys getting sick. Just wanted to know your opinion and I plan on still going out tomorrow morning.

SUP General / Kings Paddle Sports

What awesome people & great customer service. I ordered a deck pad & t-shirt from Kings. Rhonda calls & tells me they’re going to be on their way to Arizona, driving right past my house (off the 8 in SD), & they will just drop off the deck pad/t-shirt. Unfortunately, I didn’t get off work in time to be there & meet them. My wife met them & had Dave look at my board. She said he didn’t even have to pick it up, just grabbed it by the rail & told her it was 115 liters. Talk about a man that knows his craft. The numbers I was punching in on the Kings calculator was giving me the same thing. I just didn’t think I could ride something that small yet & someone could be 20 liters, 2.5”W and 3”L off w/ dimensions. Maybe the original seller thought it would be easier to sell. Dave & Rhonda also said my deck pad could take about 6+ hours as the pad is pretty bad. They suggested not using heat & sanding it down in sections. So I’m just gonna take it down to West Coast Paddle Sports & have them put it on. Anyways, I thought that was very cool of them to drop it off on their way out of town. Great customer service, very helpful with board knowledge & mind you I never met them. Nor have I bought a board from them. I’ve bought 2 used boards off Craigslist. I’ve only had few conversations over the phone with Rhonda. That goes to show you they care about their customer’s needs.  They go above & beyond customer service.  Can’t wait to throw some hours down on this new board & grab a custom come summer time.

Mr. Big – I did tell them you said hi & gave me knowledge about their boards.  They said you’re a great guy and they went out there to visit you last year.  That’s awesome!  Thanks for your input on the boards and I’m sure I’ll be hitting you up in the future.

SUP General / 2 Month New Addition & Question
« on: November 01, 2016, 12:19:40 PM »
Nov 7th will be 2 months from my SUP start date & I already purchased my 3rd board, SMH. I wanted to try new models so I found one on Craigslist.  The seller said I could paddle out to see if I wanted it. The ad said the Kings Crossover was 8’x10”, 31”, 4.25” =135L
My Kings Super Simmons is 9’2”x 29” x ? = 135 L so figured it shouldn’t be too hard to ride. I get on my knees to get out & instantly feel the board is a lot smaller & lighter. So I fell a lot just like I did when I tried my SS board for the first time.  I was out for about 1 hour but it only took 1 wave & I knew I wanted to buy it. I dropped in & the board just felt FAST. It was the only wave I caught but that’s all it took.  Surfline actually caught the wave & I’ll try to attach the video although it’s bad quality as recorded my monitor & then emailed it.

So my question.  Is there any way to find out the dimensions of the board w/out driving up to Kings in San Marcos & asking Dave? She admits the board is definitely smaller than the dimensions given to her by the seller. The board is definitely 8’ 10”.  When I laid the boards sideways next to each other,  the SS seemed to stick out a up little more so it could be 28”, but not sure.  The thickness seemed like 4.25 or 4. This is all by eye balling tape measure mind you. My SS weighs 23 lbs leaned against a chair on an electric scale & the crossover weighed 18 lbs.

The deck pad is worn out & I just found out it’s $100 to remove, $90 for the deck pad & who knows how much to install.  So unfortunately, I have to sell my big 10ft board which is gonna sting because that’s what I started on.  Even though I only rode it about 6 times, it’s still gonna hurt.  So please let me know if there’s any way to get the volume out of a board.  I’d imagine when I take it in to get the deck pad done, they can give me the thickness.  I need to know what I’m riding as I plan on buying a custom Kings Crossover 6 months to a year from now.

So please let me know if there's any way to find out the volume.  I'm guessing its 128 L but not sure.

SUP General / Your opinion on my board size please
« on: October 05, 2016, 05:02:39 PM »
Brand new to SUP surfing. Quite sad considering I was born in Hawaii, moved to mainland at 9 but been a boogie boarder most of my life. Anyhow, buzzed around the bay 5 times w/ the wife before I got bored. So the next time out we paddled out in La Jolla on the ocean side. On the way in, I tried catching small waves w/ my rental. Was able ride one & was instantly hooked. Went out and bought a used HAWAII Sup (Performer 10x31.5x4 1/8) for $325. Oddly enough, the manufacture can't give me a volume count after a few emails and phone calls. They said around 160-170 liters.  Catching waves instantly & having a blast. Went out about 4 times in the first week & felt the board might be too big as it as a little hard to turn. So already looking to go smaller. I met a fellow paddler who's been extremely helpful by letting me use anything under his quiver. He just sold me his old board which is a custom Kings Simmons 9'2"x 29"x 4 and 135 liters. A big difference from my Hawaii SUP.  Took it out this morning and in 2 hours I fell about 10-12 times and only rode one wave I dropped in late on. I plan on going 3-4 times a week so do you think I should keep using this new board, or should I look at something around 145 liters and a little wider? I'm sure I'll get to that board down the road, but I read that if your falling more then your catching, the board might be too small. So my options are to A) Keep both boards, use big one when waves are 2-3 ft & use smaller when when smaller, or B) sell both and get a new Kings custom board that's wider & has more volume. Here's a pic of my boards.  Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
