Wind Powered / Can I get some advice?
« on: July 29, 2018, 05:33:06 AM »
Good morning everyone. I used to windsurf a lot back in my teens and early twenties, but life changes and I got away from it. I am 49 now and have been fairly active doing SUP and downwinding for about 6 years now. Recently I've been considering getting back into windsurfing again.
I am 6'4" and about 225. I would like a set up to get out on days that it's too light to go downwind, or when the direction is not good for downwind. I have been blown away by the advances in equipment. Especially board volume and sail size. When I sailed, a 6.4 was considered BIG in my area. I sailed (and still have) a 9'2" Bruce Jones custom board and have TONS of memories of sailing it. But it took around 16 to 18 MPH to really get going. Fast forward to now... I spend a lot of time waiting for wind to go downwind, and don't really care for flat water.....
So... I am looking into getting a new rig this year. I am not sure of where to start because there are so many board and sail choices. I would like a foil ready board that will perform well in choppy conditions as well as an occasional foray into some smaller waves.
Any input or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

SUP General / Leashes.
« on: April 06, 2018, 07:22:22 AM »
Hey all.... I have been using a 10' coiled leash from Creatures of Leisure for about two years now and I really like it. While on vacation here in Florida, I picked up another one. When I got back to the house with it, I noticed it says it's a
"flatwater-race" leash. Now while I do paddle flat water, it is also my go to leash for downwinding. Now that I read the label on the Creatures leash, I am a bit concerned about using it in bigger conditions. I am going to keep this one, but I am wondering if anyone can suggest another coiled option that is rated for surf use?

Thanks.

Downwind and Racing / The Unlimited boards made it to Michigan!
« on: June 29, 2017, 06:31:16 PM »
Well boards were found, a deal was made and we have 2 SIC UL downwind boards. A Bullet 17'4" for XLR8, and an F16 for me. No chance to downwind yet, but we did take them out surfing some 4-5 foot waves on Lake Michigan last night, as well as some flat water over the weekend. These are going to be FUN!

Question for you guys here on the Zone. I have been curious of how different an SIC F16 would be, compared to a Bullet V2 (with A.S.S). I had a Bullet V2, but only used it a few times because of the placement of the tiller, the narrow tail, lack of volume and "tippyness" of the board. Shortly after picking up the V2, I also picked up an NSP Open Ocean 14, and immediately got comfortable because of the wider tail, huge volume and terrific stability. I LOVE the board, but I am getting the itch to try something else.
I am wondering if anyone can comment on the stability differences between the F16 and the V2?
We paddle and downwind Lake Michigan, and some bigger inland lakes here in Michigan.

I am 6'4" tall and 225lbs.

Thanks.
