Fish Tales, Stand Up style / Dragonfly SUP
« on: August 31, 2017, 08:22:53 PM »
Im picking up a Dragonfly 13'6" SUP on Monday and was wondering if anyone has paddled one of these before. I have a 12' BOTE HD and am bored with it. Dont use it much and when my daughter sits up front every ripple comes over the nose. I found an opportunity to trade for the dragonfly and am doing so on Monday. These are made very different than SUP with molded top and bottom fused together with a rub rail just like a boat. Hollow with structural ribs. Dragonfly boatworks makes flats boats and got into the SUP game several years ago. Anyway, quality isnt an issue but it does weigh 45 pounds which isnt that big of a deal to me. More important to me is how does it paddle and how bad does the nose catch wind? Appreciate any experiences.

SUP General / Drone etiquette and privacy.
« on: August 29, 2017, 10:54:18 AM »
I had an experience last week with a drone that I wanted to get your opinions on. I went out to my normal dawn patrol spot to try my recently acquired L41. I go to this spot all the time before sunset and there are usually a few guys out so I paddle down a half mile to a mile where there is a nice sandbar and no one around. Love that spot. So on this particular morning I started paddling out very wobbly of course because it was my first time on my 120L board. While trying to concentrate and get down the beach a drone shows up directly over me. Like 15' over my head. Total concentration killer with the sound of a bee hive over your head. Not to mention I'm being filmed as I flail around trying to learn my new board. I waived my arms up to let the operator know I didn't want to be filmed. He continued. I saw who it was on the beach finally and threw up my what the F arms after 20 minutes of getting buzzed and he waived back. I went further down the beach and it followed. A few more hand gestures right into the camera lens that was just 10' away at the time didn't work either. So I finally had to get out and start approaching him with my arms out and he realized I didn't want to be filmed so he retreated and packed up. I get that he was practicing his craft just as I was but I made it very obvious that I was not interested in his invasion.  I've seen these things crash on people too so not knowing his skill level that was another concern. If I was one of a bunch of guys out then I expect to be filmed occasionally but this was too much. Anyway, am I being unrealistic or is my attitude towards this justifiable?

Gear Talk / Taking my next big step down in board size.
« on: August 15, 2017, 01:25:05 PM »
As all of you understand and experience , I am already getting bored with my current board. I took a big step down at the beginning of the summer from a 160L 10' x 32" Dolsey to a 130L 10' x 29 laird surf hybrid. I have now mastered the laird and am going to go sub 8'. I'm looking at 2 totally different boards on CL and would like to get your thoughts. Both are 120L. One is an L41 simsup st. @ 7'8" x 30. The other is a starboard 7 11 as they called it @ 7' 11" x 29". The L41 is a quad which I have never surfed before but is something I need to consider.

For reference I'm 6'4" at 210 and 35yo. I have a lot of surf experience and good balance. Surfing in FL sloppy conditions.

Thanks guys.

The Shape Shack / Wrapping cloth around a sharp angle
« on: June 20, 2017, 06:12:27 AM »
My bote HD got the second crack in the sharp nose last weekend when i was unloading it from the truck. The tip on these things is so narrow and sticks out quite a bit so it just is asking for dings all the time. I took it to a guy last time and he did a fairly poor job. It seems the paint was most of the structure on the ridge of the nose and it was soft when i pushed on the area. not much cloth there to begin with. I cut out most of the nose tip and removed about an 1/8" of foam behind the glass to fill with resin. I filled the whole void with resin and q-cell so there is a serious amount of epoxy along the entire nose now. I tried to get some cloth on it last night after i sanded it all down and it kept popping up due to the sharp angles. I want to wrap 2 layers of 6oz on the entire area i sanded down but cant get it to stay put. Should i do a wrap with plastic or something to help aid in this? Thanks for any tips.

Gear Talk / SUS longboard volume vs. rider weight vs. ability
« on: June 01, 2017, 08:58:05 AM »
I am on the hunt for a new longboard style SUS board. I currently have a 10'x 33"x 4.25" Michael Dolsey that i ride regularly. The recommended weight on the website says 220 pounds recommended for advanced riders but they offer no volume calcs for it. I weigh 240 and it floats me plenty and i really enjoy riding it. It is very beefy in the nose and rails so i am limited on my maneuverability. I plugged in some numbers into the Kings sup website and it said i could work with a 145 or so on the volume there, but other sites say that boards in this range are for around 200 pound advanced riders. I would not consider myself advanced, but i am becoming very comfortable on SUPs and surf longboard rather well. I am able to go out in very nasty, choppy conditions and handle myself just fine without falling while waiting on waves or paddling out. I am looking at the Blue Planet Noosa 9'6" x 30" that is at 154L in volume. What do some others on here ride volume wise in the surf? I know there are the sub 100 group on here but im a big guy that just wants to carve and noseride on FL waves. I really like the look of the boards that DEEP Oceanboards make. Jackson Close and Dogman to be more exact. But those dont seem to be available in the US and they are fairly narrow as well. Thanks.

Gear Talk / Can i swap handle/ shaft in this Kialoa Paddle?
« on: March 30, 2017, 06:24:24 AM »
I picked up a kialoa adjustable yesterday for cheap. I intend for it to be a backup/ friend paddle. I did not realize until i got to the guys house that it is a carbon/ fiberglass blade, and an aluminum shaft. It was still a good deal so i went with it. It is pretty heavy and i am wondering if i can get a new shaft to make it lighter. Is it hard to change out?

SUP General / "Priorities" get me in trouble
« on: March 09, 2017, 10:58:45 AM »
As most of you know, this forum is a place for addicts to go and talk shop. With SUP on my mind most all of the time its nice to be able to chat and read thoughts from so many like minded folks. I just want to be paddling all the time. Its that simple. Well as a father and husband i apparently have my "priorities" off. I figure its probably an issue for most on here being the level of addiction I see in you all with SUP and related topics. My wife just doesn't understand why i need 4 boards, check the weather all the time, check the surf forecast hourly just in case it changed, etc. In my mind, these things are all very important. Finding a new board while on a work trip should be a celebrated event. But nooo. I get accused of planning the work trip around picking up a board down south. She may be partly right but not fully. Don't get me wrong, my family is def my priority and i take pride in providing a great life for them and being a great dad/ husband. But SUP is just so damned addicting that it gets me in trouble. You would think i had a mistress or something. Oh well. Time to go check the surf!! ;D

Gear Talk / Starboard Coast Runner
« on: March 02, 2017, 11:59:33 AM »
I found an older 14' SB coast runner on Craigslist and really want to make a move on it. He thinks its 2012 but has repainted it so its hard to tell from the pics. Any thoughts on this board? I was thinking about trading my 10'5" SB widepoint for it if he will take that deal. Not sure i want to give up the widepoint put i really want a nice DW/ raceboard for open ocean racing and cruising. I have another board for SUS for now and want to get a longboard shape soon anyway. the link is attached. Thanks.

The Shape Shack / Fixing up and old SUP.
« on: February 07, 2017, 06:27:38 AM »
I got an older Michael Dolsey 10' single fin in a trade for an old kayak i never used. Im not really excited about the build quality of the Dolsey but its a good loaner board or shorebreak board that i can abuse and fix as needed. I finally got the pad stripped off and i must say that i used a few suggestions from other zoners and it was pretty easy. My method was to use a multitool to shave off the foam of the pad first. That only took maybe 30 minutes. Then for the glue and left over amounts of pad i used desolve it citrus cleaner heavily, covered the whole board with plastic so it could marinate and not evaporate. after sitting for 6 hours it scraped off super easy and i had a clean deck in less than 25 minutes. I have been dreading the removal of that pad but thanks to you guys it wasnt bad at all.
I now an ready for the actual ding repair and there are probably 10 areas that need it. It nothing too major except around the grab handle. I really dont want to get into removing and replacing the handle being that this is a beater board. the deck is recessed around the handle so it sits higher than the surrounding glass by no more than 1/32 of an inch. Can i just use extra resin or cloth around it so it will all flow or should i sand the handle down a bit to get it more level with the surrounding deck? The deck seems solid so im not real concerned with a spongy surrounding area or anything like that. See attached pics.

Gear Talk / BOTEs new Gatorshell Plastic Construction
« on: February 02, 2017, 06:20:31 AM »
I am on the email list for BOTE and this came out yesterday. It seems like a better version of the way BIC makes their boards. No seems, graphics inlaid and abrasion resistant. They are the same price as the typical epoxy boards too. Thoughts?

The Shape Shack / Flaking clear coat on bottom of board
« on: December 30, 2016, 10:51:24 AM »

Gear Talk / Factory ABS fin. How much difference does material make?
« on: December 16, 2016, 11:24:59 AM »
I have grown up surfing and all of the fins i used on my longboards were always fiberglass. I was looking at what i have on my 12' Bote  HD and noticed it is ABS plastic @9.25". The shape seems good but how much difference will a Fiberglass vs. abs fin make?

I am fairly new to the SUP world and have watched just about everything i can find on technique. The best videos i have found are the ones that are filmed as the subject is actually doing the action and there is someone explaining it. Larry Cain has a great paddling video with someone following him. It would be helpful if there was someone pointing out his hip motion and all of the other important points. He is so fluid its hard to actually see these things. Another good on is Jim Terrell explaining different paddle strokes as the paddler goes by a ruler. That one is very helpful but it only gets into the paddle motions and not body motions that enhance the stroke.
For me if there was a tutorial of people doing things like paddling out into the lineup with a drone filming it and someone explaining it, that would be so helpful. Other techniques i would like to see in action with an explanation would be catching waves and doing a buoy turn to get into position, general paddling when trying to accelerate to catch a wave, and im sure there are others that i just cant think of at the moment.
All of the videos i have watched are great, but having someone show paddle technique on land with a full length paddle that they cant fully submerge, and trying to explain what to do just isnt helpful anymore. Just some thoughts from a paddler that wants to learn more from the best.

Gear Talk / New addition to the quiver. 10'5" starboard widepoint
« on: October 28, 2016, 06:48:16 AM »
One of my co workers is moving to Colorado and was getting rid of his board. He had some bad craigslist experiences and decided to just dump the board to whoever came up with the best offer the quickest. I won! $400 for a 2015 Starboard Widepoint 10'5". I couldnt believe it. Only ridden 6 times and well taken care of. I have a 12' Bote HD as my only other board and was really wanting to get something i could surf. Anytime there is surf i always take out my prone longboard and really want to get into sup surfing. At 6'3" 230 lbs I think that this is really a great board for me to get my sup surfing stoke on. I tried to go out this am but it was nasty blown out conditions and i have been sick so i decided not to risk it. Its hard not immediately jumping in the water when you get a new board. One thing i wasnt sure of is the vent. Where does starboard hide their vents? I didnt see anything that stood out to me in the handle or on the deck anywhere. Maybe in the leash plug? Anyway im really excited and cant wait to get out on it.
