Travel, Trips, Destinations / Carolina Cup accommodations
« on: March 01, 2019, 03:41:08 AM »
Not sure if this is the right place to post, but I just found out I finally got the time off work approved to be able to race at Carolina Cup.  My original plan was to get in on a house rental along with a bunch of Midwest paddlers.  But since it took so long to find out I got the time off, that rental is now full.  So I'm trying to figure out where I'm gonna stay.  It looks like the Blockade is now wanting you to book 3 nights or more.  I only want to stay two nights.  I'd like to find a roomie or roomies to either share a room at the Blockade or in a BNB rental.  Is anyone in the zone also looking for a roomie for fri and sat nights at the Carolina Cup?  If so please message me.  I'm really not trying to spend $700+ on a hotel. And I don't want to stay in Wilmington at a cheaper hotel, because I can't imagine how hard it would be to find a place to park on race morning.

Gear Talk / Pro box twins/ventral installer near Clearwater, FL?
« on: June 25, 2018, 01:14:23 AM »
I've been thinking about getting Larry's system installed on one of my boards, and I'll be on vacation in FL next month.  I was wondering if there's any shops near Clearwater that install The twin/ventral system?  It would be nice to get that work done while I'm there.

Downwind and Racing / Carolina Cup first timer questions
« on: April 14, 2018, 05:07:25 AM »
This will be my first time at the Carolina Cup.  I've got my room reserved at the Blockade Runner, and I think my truck is just ok enough to make the trek from Indiana.  I pick up my brand new board the day before the races.  What things should I know to make my CC experience as smooth and fun as possible?  How does the board storage work at the host hotel?  Can you take your board in and out of storage as you please on Friday?  I get into town Friday, probably around 4-5pm.  I was thinking I would check in, then go pick up my board.  I know, since I've never been on the board or even one like it, that I want to get a couple hours practice in before it is stored for the night.  Do I want to get my practice in before I try to put it in the hotel's storage, or can I pick up my board on my way into town, and store the board when I first arrive, and then get it out after a few and practice?  Any other advice from those of you who are veterans at the CC?

SUP General / Waiting is the hardest part!
« on: February 16, 2018, 08:57:08 PM »
After months of online research (no local places to check out boards), I finally decided on what board I wanted to buy for my next one.  Yesterday, I pulled the trigger and ordered it.  My hope was to get the board delivered early enough to have some time to practice on it before the Carolina Cup in April.  Well, the shipping container bringing it from overseas doesn't arrive in the US until just before the CC, and it's arriving at the CC.  So now the plan is I will pick up my new board when I arrive in Wrightsville Beach the day before the race.  At least I will save $150 worth of shipping costs.  Hopefully I can get a couple hours of practice in that day.  But at least I'll have the board that I think will be right for me for the big race.  But now I have to wait two months to have my new board.  It's gonna be a long two months of waiting.  It's like knowing in October what you are getting for X-mas.

SUP General / Places to demo while on vacation
« on: August 19, 2017, 07:52:13 AM »
It looks like soon I will be on vacation to my sister's in Folly Beach, SC.  I am hoping to demo some boards, specifically Starboard and NSP brands, as I'm looking at buying my next board around New Years.  Does anyone from that area know of shops/retailers where I could demo boards from those brands?  Places I've found so far, none carry those brands.  I may have to decide on a board and buy it without trying one out, but I'd love to have a chance to make a better decision.  One decision I don't know is best for me is the whole dugout or not debate.  I've never been on one before.

Downwind and Racing / Looking for stability in my next board...
« on: August 13, 2017, 06:31:18 PM »
I like my current race board (Bote Valhalla) for calm flatwater conditions.  But it is kind of tippy and my balance isn't the best yet.  I'm probably going to try to get another race board around new year's.  What I want is a board with more stability, but still with good speed/glide, and better ability to handle minor chop.  I won't be doing open ocean races, but sometimes wind and chop can kick up and give me issues.

Three boards I'm currently thinking about are the 28" Starboard Allstar, the 26" NSP Sonic, and the 27" Sunova Faast Pro Ocean.  Of those three, which will be the most stable?  I would think all of them would handle chop well enough for me.  I wish there was a place around my location (central Indiana) where I could demo each of these.  Chances are, I'll probably have to buy a board without trying one out, like I did last time.

Cost will factor in as well.  If I went with the Allstar, I'd get the hybrid construction to keep the cost down.  The Sonic is decently priced.  The Sunova may be a little too much unless I found one used.

Classifieds / ISO board bag for 14' Bote Valhalla
« on: April 28, 2017, 02:42:58 PM »
I really need to find a bag for my 14' Valhalla for my long trips.  Was thinking of getting a 14' FCS bag, but I'm not sure if it would fit.  Does anyone have a bag that would fit or know where I can get one.  Unfortunately the only 14' bag Bote makes is too big, as it's made to fit a 14'Rackham.  Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

Classifieds / WTB: Blue Ninja Race Fin
« on: February 05, 2017, 07:53:44 AM »
I'm looking to buy a blue Ninja race fin.  It can be solid/mostly solid colored or preferably a pattern, but I want blue to be the predominant color/theme.  I can't seem to find too many Ninja's online now, and the ones I've seen aren't quite what I want, appearance-wise.  I'm sure someone on here must have one they're willing to part with, or know where I should look.  I may break down and get a different color, but I want it to match the board I'm probably about to get.  Thanks in advance for any help.

Downwind and Racing / "Low budget" race board options
« on: September 17, 2016, 11:30:14 AM »
Maybe early next year, I might be able to buy a new board for racing.  But even then, my budget won't be huge.  What I'm looking for is a race board in the 12-14' long, 26-27" wide range, and $1500 or less.  My intent of use would be for racing in lakes/reservoirs/rivers(non-whitewater).  So far I've only ridden boards in the 29.5-32" wide range, but think I'm ready for a thinner board.  But since I haven't gone 26 yet, I may want a board that is more stable for its width.  So far I'm leaning toward the Isle Spear.  It's 12'6"x27", and selling for $1200 now.  I know I'm not getting a Starboard or Naish at that price, but is there a good quality board in the <$1500 neighborhood?  After things I've heard about SUP ATX boards, I don't think I want to get one of their boards.  I know that one answer is to not get a board until I can afford another $2300 board, but I'm curious if I can get something worth having cheaper.

Flatwater and Touring / Noob fin questions
« on: November 11, 2015, 05:33:00 AM »
I'm looking at different aftermarket fins and was wondering, what is the best tracking fin to put on a touring SUP?  Even at the detriment of turning ability.  And then I want to know why, what makes a certain fin track straighter?  Not knowing much yet, I'd think a larger overall area (from the side view) would be better at tracking?  One fin I've seen online that claims to be great at tracking is a Future Fins JB Runner SUP fin with a depth of 8.25, a base of 7.02, and an area of 58.9 sq. in.  Another pair I've seen that I would think would track straight as heck are the True Ames D-1and D-2.  Not sure the actual area, but I looks even bigger than the Futures one.  I'm guessing it doesn't turn for you know what.  So if I want a fin where I'm more wanting to just go straight, what's the fin I want to pop in for that?

Sneak Peeks, Rumors, and Wish Lists / Paddle question
« on: October 28, 2015, 06:53:35 AM »
I'm brand new to SUP, and have only been on a board twice.  Once was a beginner lesson at Folly Beach, SC and once on a local (IN) reservoir on the board (11' Liquid Shredder soft board) I bought.  I just bought a cheap paddle (Airhead metal shaft and fiberglass blade) when I got my board.  I plan on buying a more expensive board before or by springtime, and I want a good paddle to go with it.  I'm wanting an all carbon paddle.  I really love the look of the RealTree patterned Axe Paddle sold by Bote.  But in beginning to read this forum now that I just joined up, it seems the only words I've seen on here have not been favorable on their paddles.  I don't want to spend $250 for a paddle that isn't that good.  Is there anyone on here that can give a positive review of their paddles?  Or... is there another brand that puts out a paddle done in RealTree, Mossy Oak, or similar realistic camo pattern?  I just love the look.  In general, should I avoid any brand that sells an all carbon paddle under $200?  Will all of those be crap?  Until I saw the Axe RealTree, I was thinking of getting a Rave Sports all carbon paddle for about $168.  Considering I paid $68 for the paddle I currently have, I would think anything carbon would be better?
