General Discussion / How many layers of glass to fix a buckled sup?
« on: November 28, 2023, 11:26:02 AM »
My beloved old pre-Nalu Naish buckled on top near the handle.

The bottom is fine. I'm wondering how many layers of glass people think I should use? I'm up to 3 layers of 6oz.

Love this board and want to make sure to add enough strength.

General Discussion / Any info about this board?
« on: January 07, 2022, 08:28:49 PM »
I just picked up this sexy board today, wondering if anyone has any info about it?

The person I bought it from guesses it's from about 2012. It's super pristine, far too pristine for me, ha.

Dimensions are written as 10' x 23" x 29" x 17 6/8" x 4 1/8"

Sure is purdy. I'm hoping it's a good replacement for my beloved old Naish Nalu that was 10'6" x 28" (the older narrower model). I loved that board but I recently snapped it and I stalled out on the repair. Hoping this one is a similar nimble feeling longboard.

General Discussion / Thoughts on this Gerry Lopez Surftech?
« on: June 19, 2021, 04:17:32 PM »
I just picked up an 11 foot Gerry Lopez Surftech, it was on Craigslist for such a good deal that I couldn't resist.

My friend picked it up and I won't have it for probably another week, but I'm wondering if anyone has any info on it?

I don't know the dims beyond that it's 11 feet long.

Here's the 3 pics I have:

General Discussion / Any thoughts on the Jimmy Lewis Mano 9'9"?
« on: February 24, 2021, 07:45:33 PM »
A Jimmy Lewis Mano came up on Craigslist near me, it's exactly like this board:

http://www.standuppaddling.it/content/view/829

I'm not seeing a lot of info about this board online though. Guessing it was discontinued awhile ago?

Any thoughts on how it rides?

I'm about 6 foot, 210 pounds, surf in Northern California and enjoy big surf.

SUP General / Any info on this Tropical Blends 12 foot board?
« on: September 24, 2019, 07:01:39 AM »
I was wondering if anyone has an info on this board? To me it looks a bit like the Paddle Surf Hawaii 12 foot gun but a bit wider? Maybe that's wishful thinking?

I can't see much from these pics and don't have the board in hand yet. Unfortunately I don't know it's dimensions other than that it's 12 feet.

Any word on the Tropical Blends boards in general?

Thanks for any help.

SUP General / Any thoughts on this Kings 14' board?
« on: May 18, 2019, 09:45:20 PM »
I surfed a Bark Vapor 14' x 26" (I think on the width) today in what would otherwise be mediocre surf and had a blast. I found this Kings 14' board for sale and am considering buying it, but I don't know much about this type of board so wondering if anyone has any info on it, either the model (or if custom) or the shape?

Planning to use it in small summer surf and possibly down winders.

I'm guessing it's older since it doesn't have the new style bulbous nose? And that old school handle? All I know about it is that it's 14' x 28". I'm worried that's a bit too wide but hey it's nice to relax sometimes, ha.

SUP General / Longshot I know, but any leads on a Son of Bombora?
« on: January 28, 2019, 06:34:36 PM »
Hey it's worth a shot... Does anyone know of a Son of Bombora by Jimmy Lewis for sale by chance? I have the 12 foot version and super love it, but it's a bit long for mellower days.

I'm a bit north of San Francisco but will travel or maybe can work out shipping. Condition unimportant! In fact the more beat up and in need of repair the better.

SUP General / Any details on this PSH All Arounder?
« on: February 16, 2017, 10:59:21 AM »
I just bought a 9'6" Paddle Surf Hawaii "All Arounder" off Craigslist, couldn't resist the $650 and pristine condition. I'm wondering if anyone knows any details on it? It has a different tail than all the other PSH All Arounders I've seen so I'm wondering if its an early design?

I've had one session on it in crappy windswell and its a fun cruisey board, plenty stable for me and I'm 6' and 210 pounds. Not a barge but also not a potato chip. I haven't had it in proper conditions yet but it was surprisingly turney even with my absurdly wrong fin setup.

It came with a tiny little 4" or so single fin, and I forgot to bring spares, so that was challenging, but ultimately fun. Sideways takeoffs!

And does anyone have any fin setup recommendations? I'll probably run it as a thruster.

And those stickers are heading for the trash!

SUP General / Loaner or rental SUP in NYC?
« on: November 12, 2016, 02:48:29 PM »
I'm in New York City for a week, all this beautiful water and no way to play on it... Does anyone happen to know of a place to rent a board for a bit? Or a loaner? Glad to reciprocate any loan on the west coast in or near San Francisco.

Longshot I know but worth a shot!

SUP General / Finally the surf season has started in Northern California!
« on: October 19, 2016, 02:43:15 PM »
After a couple of false starts, the season has finally started! The swell arrived Thursday just before sunset. I surfed the whole thing from those first pulses in the near dark through yesterday when the sets were fading. Soooo good to be done with summer slop.

I finally found a 12 foot Paddle Surf Hawaii gun and surfed it through the whole swell. I only meant to surf it on the big days (Friday mostly) but fell in love with the thing. Its an absolute rocket and really nimble for a big board. Gets in so easy and even handles steep drops surprisingly well, and makes chop mostly a non-issue. Its funny I also bought an 8.10 x 30 JP right before the swell as well, which surfs the pocket so nicely, but its going to be hard to make the decision to paddle out on it when the PSH gun is such a joy to surf. I can totally see why people would surf this thing in all conditions.

Hope everyone within range got some! And here's to another year of swells!

Gear Talk / Hobie SUP "stepper board"
« on: May 25, 2016, 02:20:44 PM »
I'm guessing this has been posted here before but I can't find it. Hobie's pedal driven paddle board:

I like what the Hobie dealer said in the comments. "Ever tried to paddle board for a few hours, try and hold up the paddle all day, now you can relax and pedal away. I assure you pedaling a craft this way via the amazingly easy to use but powerful Mirage drive will be a joy." As if pedaling, especially from a standing position, isn't at least as exhausting as paddling. But I guess this has value for people with tendonitis? And a need to look like a complete dork? And room in their garage for toys they'll use twice and forget about?

SUP General / Any advice for shipping a SUP?
« on: February 23, 2016, 01:10:35 PM »
I'm trying to ship a SUP from West Palm Beach, Florida to San Francisco and not having much luck with the freight companies I'm calling. If I bring it to them packed up they all want in the neighborhood of $500 to ship it.

And that's if we drop it off at their shipping center and pick it up on the other end.

I've never shipped a board before and I'm wondering if there's some trick to it? Something to ask for?

And any advice for packing it?

SUP General / Anyone know of a PSH 12' gun for sale?
« on: February 01, 2016, 12:36:05 PM »
I'm in the market for a 12' Pacific Surf Hawaii gun, wondering if anyone might know of one gathering dust somewhere that someone might want to sell?

Will pay for drop shipping or maybe make a roadtrip out of coming to get it.

SUP General / Board recommendation for a big fast wave?
« on: January 12, 2016, 11:32:40 AM »
I just broke yet another board, so I'm in the market again for a new one. And I have a loooong history of buying the wrong board so I'm trying to avoid that this time around.

The main place I sup is a pretty heavy, fast and often large freight train. Its a great wave but there's not a lot of opportunities for turning, it's mostly just a rush to make the sections, but you do get lots of chances to get up high on the wave under the lip for that awesome burst of speed. And sometimes there's the chance for the odd cut back.  It's usually at least overhead and pushes toh when we (Northern California) get our meaty swells.

I've been surfing it on my beloved old Naish Nalu, which was 10.6 x 28" (not 30" like the new Nalus) but I just broke it. That board surfed this wave soooo well. Nice early entry, and grabbed the face so well on the backside drop. It wasn't exactly a lip smacker but it had enough turning for most of the way I like to surf (though a little more turny would be nice).

Before that I was using a 10.6 x 30" Nalu, which also did a good job but there was a big difference with that 30" width compared to the 28" and I thought it was a bit too much board. The wave broke that board too, and before that it broke a Hokua that I borrowed from a friend. It's been an expensive wave for me!

Anyway, I'm leaning towards a Jimmy Lewis for the increased durability. My friend kills it out there on his 10.8 Hanalei. But watching him turn it before catching a wave, it's like turning a battleship. I'm wondering if this is likely to be too much board? But he usually rides shortboards so he might not be used to weighting the tail to pivot.

I'm also wondering if a Stryker might be a good one to consider? And the Qwad? I grew up skateboarding so I tend to be drawn towards thrusters, but I haven't tried the Qwad.

I paddled a Stun Gun the other day and wasn't a fan, I like more longboardy glide and early entry.

Anyway, thoughts?

SUP General / My two cents about board length
« on: September 15, 2015, 01:44:12 PM »
I'm somewhat new to SUP, about a year into it, although I live right at a really good break so that year gets a lot of SUP surfing. And I've been laydown surfing for about 20 years before that.

Anyway, I'm really struck by the pressure that SUPers put on each other to ride ever shorter boards, at least at my break. When someone says they're riding a longboard they almost apologize when they say it, and will derisively throw in that they're riding "a canoe" or something like that.

Its funny because a lot of the people who say it struggle when paddling their too-small boards around, falling in and cutting their sessions short because they get tired. And its all so absurd, since with just a little more length, width or volume they'd be having such a better time. And it made me think back to skiing in the 80s and 90s, before the fat ski revolution, how we all wanted to ride long thin skis solely because it meant we were better skiers. Those longer skis were a bear to control and went way too fast, but we all had to have them just because of what they represented. We'd get that bit of pride when we'd say we ride 210's.

And then the snowboard revolution hit, and they were all having way too much fun, and it changed the focus of skiing from working on technique to just having fun, and hence we got short fat skis that were soooo much easier to ride and so much more fun. We always knew that short fat skis were more fun, but it was taboo to ride them since it meant you were a kook. But suddenly it was ok, and now you'll never ever see anyone riding anything else, except racers.

Now in laydown surfing something similar is happening. Everyone has always wanted to ride what Kelly Slater rides, and they're always paring down to smaller and smaller boards with that potato chip as the ultimate goal, always just a little out of their comfort zone. But then Costco came out with that Wavestorm $100 fatty board and now everyone has one and you see people absolutely ripping on the things. Its funny when I see that blue and white board at the beach you know its either a super beginner or an absolute ripper. And I think its causing the same revolution in surfing as short skis did in skiing.

It doesn't look like that revolution has happened in SUP yet. At my break at least, a good half the SUPers are on boards that make them struggle. And even the ones without a surf background are learning to surf on something other than a longboard, which is just crazy in my opinion. We'll have days where its small and mushy and still you get guys on 110 liter boards surfing like crap but they're so proud of what they're riding.

And don't get me wrong, I love to hit the lip too, and I can paddle much smaller boards than my beloved Nalu 10'6", but for most days that 10'6" means pure pleasure. I predict a similar change in SUP board choice, but I'm not sure what will do it.

Anyway, just my two cents, since I'm stuck at work dreaming about surfing.
