Downwind and Racing / Downwind Clash - vid
« on: June 09, 2018, 08:10:13 PM »
Watching DJ's great Downwind Daze vid reminded me that I had prepared a vid back in January this year when I was still in Hong Kong of my final and epic downwind session there which includes something that has never happened to me before downwinding and that is a full on broadside collision (at 2:18). Somehow Youtube changed their music policies and you can no longer get access to the tracks that were on the Youtube creator studio so I shelved it.... Here it is now..

Downwind and Racing / F7 on an F14 - Downwinding Vid
« on: February 25, 2018, 06:43:51 PM »
Before I finally made the move to the US, I managed to get in a few more downwinders in Hong Kong at the beginning of this year, and we had some epic runs, including this one where winds were gusting Force 7 (28-33 knots, 50-61 kph, 25-31mph) but having packed up all my boards to be shipped to the US, I had to borrow a friends SIC F14 which at 30" wide is a little harder to get on the plane, but in winds like this, is a huge amount of fun...

This past week we had a great run on the 11.25 mile / 18km H2O downwind run (Havens Beach, Sag Harbor, to Orient Point, Long Island, USA) which ended in this tricky harbor entry at the end with lots of backwash. A "little" challenging after 2 hours of paddling... I'd be interesting to hear about any challenging end of the run landings..

SUP Safety / PLBs. Personal Location Beacons - A cautionary tale
« on: December 02, 2017, 12:00:37 PM »
A surfskiing friend send me this story about a Surfskier activating their PLB on the world famous Millers Downwind Run near Cape Town, South Africa.

“A couple of weeks ago, here in Cape Town, a paddler found himself in trouble on the famous (notorious?) Miller’s Run downwind route.  Some 2km offshore, he fell off and after a number of attempts was unable to remount his surfski.  He activated his McMurdo FastFind 220 Personal Locator Beacon.  An hour and half later he was pulled from the water having swum his ski almost all the way to safety. A happy ending - but not because of the PLB.”

If like me you own, have registered and carry a PLB when paddling in the ocean and in high wind or extreme conditions, this is a must read.. I had no idea that they were so sensitive to positioning, being exposed to water once activated and that satellites that pick their signals up may only pass overhead once an hour...

https://www.surfski.info/latest-news/story/1608/personal-locator-beacons-and-surfski-paddlers.html

I actually have the McMundo FastFind PLB in this story which I registered in the US. My other PLB is the ACCUSAT Pocket Series 408/121.5 MHz PLB which is registered in Hong Kong... This one is bigger that the FastFind...

Another Sunday and the wind lined perfectly up for a new downwinder we’ve named “Missiles” due to the place is ends up in a small cove at Missile Monument in Guardian Park on Sandy Hook, New Jersey.

This 9.3mile / 15km run crosses the New York / New Jersey State line and starts at Great Kills Park on Statin Island, NY and works in a NW wind.

Conditions started fairly mellow and built up the further offshore we got from Statin Island. We left as the tide turned and was coming in, which made the water messed up as we neared Sandy Hook but some great long glides were had.

Visibility was perfect, as was the temperature and we were actually overheating in our 5mm wetsuits.

Downwind and Racing / "Chimneys" Downwind Run - Long Island, NY, USA
« on: November 21, 2017, 09:09:37 PM »
Zoner Yuval and I headed out with one other crazy New York paddler on a new epic downwind run we’ve named “Chimneys”. Named because it starts at a the NorthPort Power Station, in Long Island, NY, USA which has 4 chimneys and in a westerly wind heads across the Smithtown Bay towards the two chimneys of Port Jefferson Power Station and finishes at West Meadow Beach some 10.5 miles / 17kms away. These chimneys make great landmarks and can be seen from miles away.

On this day though, the wind was SSW and we were blown south and ended up at the mouth of the Nissequogue River at Kings Park Bluff near the Old Dock Inn which was a 6.5 mile / 10.5km run.

Conditions were near perfect for us on a SICMaui F16v3, SIC Bullet 14v1 TWC and Blue Planet Bump Rider 14 x 27”.

When we ended up at the river mouth we had to make landfall and regroup. Boards lain on the beach unattended were blown away and the sand was being whipped up into a face and leg sandblaster. The river however looked perfect for an inland downwinder so we all mounted up and set off up the river for a 4.3mile / 7kms run which at least half was downwinding conditions, ending up near Smithtown where we stashed the boards and called an Uber to take us back to our launch vehicle.

We named the first run “Chimneys - Inner,” since it ran along the coast and did not reach West Meadow Beach as the regular Chimneys Run would have. We were amazed how mellow and fun the Nissequogue River Downwind part was and how beautiful and peaceful the winding upriver part was.

A great day had by all. Sadly the GoPro died before the end, but hope you enjoy.. Vid on its way..

Burchas and I were very lucky to be hosted by fellow Zoner and intrepid paddler Ichabod Spoonbill who introduced us to the awesome Bear Mountain Downwind Run which works in a NW or SE wind...A stunning 4.3mile / 7km Hudson River run. So good that Burchas and I ended up doing it twice, the second run just before it got dark.

What is more remarkable about this run than anything else, is we're from 3 different countries and would never have met, let alone paddled together if it weren't for the Zone..

Here is the vid of the 1st run.

Training, Diet, and Fitness / The effects of SUP - A 2016 study
« on: November 07, 2017, 02:21:25 PM »
I came across this online. Interesting in that they found in the novice group studied that whilst there were many benefits balance did not improve over the testing period.

“The training program consisted of 3 x 1 h sessions per week for 6 weeks. There was a rest period of 48 h before subsequent sessions with no sessions being performed on Sundays for either group. Participants were given longer, wider boards to begin with (~11' length, 33" width, 4.6" thickness), before moving on to shorter, narrower boards (~length 9'1, 29.5"width, 4.4" thickness) to challenge postural control more as the weeks progressed”

“Conclusion

Stand up paddle boarding appears to be an enjoyable, easy to learn alternative to traditional forms of training. This study shows significant improvement in aerobic and anaerobic fitness, multidirectional trunk endurance and self-rated quality of life measures can be elicited by SUP participation for previously untrained individuals. This study provides some evidence for the anecdotal claims of benefits of its participation.”

It's taken a while to get myself sorted out here in the US downwind-wise, but it is awesome to find fellow Zoners and others willing to get up before dawn to set up vehicles for a good long downwind run. ;D

This is a run we've named "H2O" which works in a Southerly (or Northerly) wind and runs from Havens Beach near Sag Harbour, Long Island, NY and ends at the Orient Point By the Sea Restaurant and Marina next to the Orient Point Ferry on the North Fork of Long Island. The run is 10.6 miles / 17.2 kms long, and run in a southerly starts off very mellow and gradually builds up with some nice sized bumps. We started at around 9.00am and high tide was at noon which meant the waves stacked off Cedar Point (see vid 2:10) as the wind was in the opposite direction to the incoming tide.

It was great to get three different craft out on the water together: an OC-1, Burchas's new Standaram, and the trustworthy SIC Bullet 14v1.

Downwind and Racing / Montauk to Lions Head Beach Downwinder
« on: September 05, 2017, 09:22:59 AM »
Slowly but surely I am managing to explore the awesome downwind runs of the East Coast of the US. This past Sunday we headed up to Montauk, Long Island, and were blessed with 20 knot Easterly winds which meant we could do an 18km / 11 mile downwind run to Lion's Head Beach.

We put in from the car park at the corner of W. Lake Drive in front of Gosman's Restaurant, where there is a convenient breakwater to get you out in the Long Island Sound, and then it was a fairly straight run to the spit to the South of Gardiners Island. There we had to portage our boards across the spit, about 50m / 60 yards, and then a smooth run to Lions Head Beach.

The swell was big before Gardiners Island, as effectively you are getting the full swell from the Atlantic, but after Gardiners Island the swell was blocked

If anyone is interested in downwinding in this area (Long Island Sound) either from the CT or NY side, please PM me. There are a couple of us keen to get a downwind crew together, now that I will be spending more time in this area.

Some pics to follow
