Gear Talk / Surf oriented iSUP's?
« on: November 16, 2016, 05:20:58 PM »
I hope to do some travel next year and won't be able to take a "real" board.  Any surf oriented inflatable boards people have tried and would recommend?  Only one I've found on the net is the Red Paddle Whip.  Any others out there?  How well do they work in surf?

Wind Powered / Fastest sailing WindSUP?
« on: July 22, 2014, 08:10:12 PM »
Are there any WindSUP's out there that could be considered an "early planer"?  I tried my Starboard Avanti, then a Formula Windsurfer, now I'm wondering if there might be something half way between the two that's worth looking at?

Training, Diet, and Fitness / New SUP'er pulling muscles
« on: June 13, 2014, 02:15:52 PM »
I'm 58 yrs old and a life long prone surfer.  Besides surfing, I do a bunch of other water sports (kayaking, kite surfing, etc.) and I also paddled canoes as a kid.  I started SUP on flat water a few weeks ago and am still paddling on flat water.  I try to paddle for about an hour at least every other day.  I think I'm progressing in the sport OK, but I seem to be having muscle injuries I've never had before.  The first was a pulled shoulder muscle that I nursed for a couple days until it felt better.  Then an elbow pain that has taken over a week to get better.  Yesterday I pulled a muscle in my back, which fortunately is feeling better today.

My problem is that I'm not accustomed to having injuries like this and I don't know what's causing them.  Seems like every time I SUP, I pull a muscle.  I can prone surf for 4 hours in over head surf without a single pulled muscle, but an hour on flat water at a reasonable paddle rate and I end up with a pulled muscle.  I'm frustrated.  :(

My guess is that one of these are the cause:

1.  I'm not warming up enough?  I don't typically warm up before exercising, but maybe I should start.
2.  My paddle isn't long enough?  I'm 6'5" and my paddle is 86" long (the longest I could find).
3.  My form isn't correct?  I've not taken any lessons, but have watched some youtube tutorials which all seem to contradict each other.

Wind Powered / Tell me I'm not crazy
« on: June 02, 2014, 07:52:15 AM »
I'm a heavy weight (245 lbs), have been kitesurfing for the last 14 years, moved to San Diego last year and am thinking of selling all my kite gear and buy a windsurf rig for my Starboard Avanti SUP.  My wife thinks I'm nutz.  I'm wondering if she's right.

I just remember the "old days" when I first started windsurfing in Kailua during the early 80's.  It seemed that I could windsurf anywhere and in any condition.  From a boat, from a dock, in glassy light winds or howling nuclear winds.  Yeah, the gear is clunky and heavy, but I sort of miss it and my Avanti has a mast connection that seems to be begging to be used.

Am I nutz or what?

Gear Talk / Surftech EZ Plugs - Any experience?
« on: May 26, 2014, 06:02:44 PM »
My wife's Jimmy Lewis SUP didn't come with a carrying handle so I decided I'd give an "EZ Plug SUP Handle" by Surftech ( http://shop.surftech.com/ACCESSORIES/SUP_accessories/EZ-Plug-SUP-Handle-Flat-Surface ) a try.  The reviews I've found were mixed.  Before I install it, has anyone else used these plugs?  Do they hold pretty well?  One reviewer said the included glue didn't hold and recommended using epoxy.  Anyone try this?

Gear Talk / Bag for a SB Avanti?
« on: May 15, 2014, 05:58:56 AM »
Anyone know where I can get a bag for my Starboard Avanti (11'2" x 36" x 4.7") and roughly what they cost?  The local shop says they aren't to be found but I really need one.

Gear Talk / WindSUP rig for a SB Avanti questions?
« on: May 11, 2014, 01:22:38 PM »
Does anyone know what the mast base attachment is for a Starboard Avanti?  I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on a '13 silver AST that has the two holes to mount the mast.  Couldn't tell what the attachment is.  Also, what fin(s) are recommended for the forward, windsurfing fin slots?  The back twins are 5.5" so I'm guessing the fronts are the same?

Gear Talk / Naish Odysseus feedback?

Anyone have any experience with this board?  Good first board for a very big guy?  Saw a video posted on the seabreeze forum, looks like it might work for me.  Price is about 40% less than a Starboard Whopper Extra  (6'5", 250 lbs, 58 yrs old, long time surfer)

Gear Talk / Big guy getting started in San Diego...
« on: April 17, 2014, 04:05:41 PM »
I'm 58 years old, 6'5" and 250 lbs.  Been surfing for 40+ years, windsurfed for 20 years, and kitesurfed for about 14 years.  I'm "semi" fit (depending on how much time I get to spend on the water).  We get a lot of smaller waves here in San Diego so am thinking about getting into SUP mostly for those small wave days.  I have a bunch of friends who SUP and they all say that going bigger is better to start.  I demo'd a couple boards last weekend, a JP Australia Wide Body 10'9" x 32" x 180 Liters and a Starboard (can't remember the model) that was about 160 Liters.  I was able to stand on the JP Wide Body but wasn't really comfortable.  Never got off my knees with the Starboard.  I"m thinking a board that is 200+/- Liters might be the go for me.  I'd really like to try a Starboard Whopper Extra or similar (like the JP Australia Wide Body 10'2" x 35", but haven't found anyone in San Diego that has them.  I'm reluctant to put down that kind of dough without giving the board a try first.  Suggestions?

Oh, one more thing.  I live on a boat, so space is a bit tight.  I already have my 8'9" surfboard and my wife's 10' SUP board on the rail, so I'd really like to keep the length of the board under 11'.  I'd even consider a surf oriented inflatable SUP if such a thing really exists.
