SUP General / CA Definition Amendment
« on: March 07, 2018, 09:53:10 PM »
I'd posted this topic on one of the sub pages, but I'm seeing it's getting a lot of traction on social media groups including the kayaking community. I know this page gets more traffic so I'm posting the link here.

The last word own this topic is that adding the definition of "machinery" to the CA HNC, it will allow law enforcement the ability to better enforce current laws against those using a "vessel" while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. Supposedly they can't perform a field sobriety test on those aboard a "mechanically propelled vessel" that's non-motorized.
So it sounds like CA simply does not want to allow one to get drunk and/or high and go paddleboarding. ;)
Any other thoughts? Some think it's a first attempt to modify the classification of "vessels" so more people in CA will be required to be registered with the State. I don't see this, but maybe I'm missing something.

SUP Advocacy / New CA Bill Introduced
« on: March 06, 2018, 06:35:35 PM »
Interesting! I just saw this posted on one of our local kiteboarding forums. This would also apply to paddleboards.

Concerning us paddlers, it looks like it's simply designed to clarify that a paddle is "machinery" and could endanger someone.

California SB-1247 Vessels: machinery: mechanically propelled vessel.

http://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billTextClient.xhtml?bill_id=201720180SB1247

(l)(1) “Machinery” means any sail, rigging, rudder, oar, paddle, or similar device.
(2) Any vessel that uses machinery in its operation is a mechanically propelled vessel.

Whitewater and River SUP / Wakeboarding PFD?
« on: October 23, 2017, 03:43:18 PM »
I need to replace and old Astral pfd (Tempo 200) that I've been using for whitewater. Since one is not "sitting" when paddling, it got me thinking about different pfd types that may be better suited for whitewater paddleboarding.

Standup paddling puts one in an upright position like a wakeboarder, so why not use a CGA pfd designed for that application. Some believe one needs a "rescue" grade pfd for whitewater applications like Astral's Greenjacket rated Type5 (16.5lbs/74 newtons). Type3 waterski/wake vests and whitewater vests are rated at 15.5lbs/70n and the majority of whitewater vests available are only Type3, so I believe as long as it's rated Type3, one is good to go regardless of the style.

The other benefit with a wakeboard type vest is the fuller coverage on the back, hip, and neck areas. The only downside I can see is the lack of pockets for storage. I've also seen some vests that adapting a safety release strap for leash usage would not be a problem and there's even functional spots for attaching an external safety knife and a whistle.

So moving forward, I'm now really struggling with the idea of getting another kayaking vest when I'm not kayaking. I also believe that getting back onto the board after a fall would be much easier, faster, and ultimately safer with wakeboard type vest. I've found the added bulk of a kayak vest can make it quite cumbersome at times.

So I'm curious if anyone else is using a CGA wakeboarding vest for whitewater purposes. Any pros and cons other than what I pointed out? Thanks!

Gear Talk / Best Tie Down Straps?
« on: September 07, 2017, 02:52:36 PM »
I'm looking for some straps about 12'-13' long with a cam-lock. I don't need locking ones like Kanulock, just basic straps. I do want something that has a protected case around or under the cam like several brands offer. Can anyone here recommend their favorite(s) please?

FCS has a unique version with no moving parts. Anyone have experience with this version vs. a traditional cam-lock?

The cheapest ones I could find that have the size and features I require are by Seattle Sports, but I'm not sure about their quality. You know, that "you get what you pay for" thing.

Wind Powered / Hybrid Board Concept

Cool concept! Hard board construction were you need it most.

Pendleboard is the same concept. Pendle was involved with Duo and then went on his own.

Gear Talk / Kanulock Board Damage
« on: July 30, 2017, 09:14:36 PM »
I discovered today that 105* temps plus freeway driving equals rail damage from the cables biting in.
Anyone have any suggestions how to best fix this? Thinking about filling in the divots with Solarez, but I'm sure how well it will adhere.

Stumbled onto this today (via King's)...

Cool idea, but I'm not keen on having to pay to register my SUP with the DMV to use such an item.

In CA, any vessel that is propelled by mechanical means is required to be registered with the DMV.

I have to admit that I was a bit intrigued by this iSUP design. Bummer that they failed.

SUP General / SUP Drowning Lawsuit Pending
« on: November 26, 2016, 07:04:29 PM »
I just saw this news today.
http://southtahoenow.com/story/11/23/2016/family-south-lake-tahoe-drowning-victim-sues-sup-company

This will be an interesting case to follow. Since the victim was not wearing a pfd (because USCG rules don't enforce it) and he made the personal decision to jump in after his friend without putting on his pfd first, I don't think their case will be very strong. In addition a small craft advisory (red flag warning) is just that, a warning and does not prohibit those from entering the water. I'd be surprised if the shop can be held liable for weather events even if they were aware of the risk it could pose. The shop did follow the rules and sent them all out with pfds, but only one decided to wear one. The rest had them strapped to their boards and boats per the CG's rules.

I'm curious what others think here on the Zone.

Gear Talk / Leash Sizing?
« on: October 26, 2016, 12:57:59 PM »
What is the correct leash length to board ratio? After searching here and the internet for some precise info pertaining to this topic, I could not really find the answer I was looking for, so I'm hoping the experts here can steer me in the right direction. I'm in the market for a coiled calf leash and have a 14' board.

What has me confused is brands like FCS for example who make a coiled "race" leash that's adjustable for 12'6-14' boards, but no mention of how long the leash is. Based off their marketing I'd have to assume the coil combined with the adjusted position of the strap will allow the leash extend to 14' max? On the other end you have brands like Starboard who only offer an 8' coiled "race" leash or Pro-Lite with their 9' coiled leashes.

The majority of the coiled leashes available extend to only 10', so how is one supposed to know which size is the correct one. Do I want a 14' leash because I have a 14' board or do I only need a leash that's 8-9' since I'm only standing 6-7' from the tail? Or is it something in between that I really need? Seems like this should be simple to figure out, but with the array of sizes available (no to mention thickness options) it makes it really confusing. I've now found coiled leashes sequentially in sizes 8'-12' and the adjustable 12'6-14' FCS models. That's way too many options with little to no direction on which is the correct size based on board length or end use.

Now if one were to go the non-coiled route, the same question applies. Do I get a 14' leash like Starboard's Lightweight leash or something shorter like C4's 10' "race" leash? Once again it's quite confusing to figure out what's correct.

Gear Talk / Best $300 Racing Paddle?
« on: September 24, 2016, 03:35:49 PM »
I need a new paddle, but I can't justify spending more than $300. I want something full carbon and I'm looking for a blade size in the mid 80s. What can you recommend? Where I live, demo'ing is not an option, so I will have to buy based on feedback alone.
I'm 145lbs, 5'11 and paddling a 14' race board. I'm not racing, but want something light and stiff. Thanks
I know the Lahui Kai boards were a good deal for their performance, but how's their carbon paddle?
