Gear Talk / Recessed In-Deck Hand Grip

Aloha and Happy Hollowdays Zoners-

I'm looking for a recessed in-deck Hand Grip to install on/in an older PSH Ripper. I epoxied one in years ago after routing out the slot. The Hand Grip itself is just not that good, I have big hands, and while it's better than nothing, it's not good for longer walks or if you're wearing gloves.

I like the recessed Hand Grips in the Naish boards, you can wrap/curl your fingers for a better grip with them, a very functional design.

I've done some internet searches and all I'm finding are the same as I put in or not what I'm looking for. Can anyone here give me some feedback? Are there any recessed in-deck Hand Grips like the Naish ones available for sale somewhere online? I was thinking of contacting Naish directly about it, but thought I'd inquire here first.

SUP General / A couple photos from the Northeast Blizzard Swell...

We only got about 3 inches of snow at Long Beach Island, NJ from the storm, but we did get a solid East-Northeast Swell with nuking offshore winds. Needless to say it was very cold.

Surfing the SUP was an advantage catching the set waves, which the short boarders were having a tough time with. Just can't get as deep in the tube on the SUP. Another advantage is there are a lot less ice cream headaches with the SUP, as long as you play your cards right, Lol.

Events / 22.5 mile Paddle around Atlantic Citys' Absecon Island

This is a bit last minute, but I'm putting it out there. The 4th annual Dean Randazzo Paddle for a Cause takes place this coming Sunday June 12. This challenging 22.5 mile paddle circles Absecon Island thru bay, open ocean and 2 inlets. Proceeds from this event benefit fighting cancer. The start and finish is at the Golden Nugget casinos' Trump Marina at Absecon Inlet. Here is a link with all the relevant info.

This is a great warmup for 26.5 mile SEA Paddle NYC around Manhattan in August.

Downwind and Racing / Lahui Kai 14 vs. Bark Dominator 14 ?

I'm looking for some comparative feedback on these 2 boards. I'd like to hear some experienced opinions about the flat water and open ocean performance of these 2 boards. Maybe even speculate which board would be best for a 20 mile race with a 10 mile bay leg and a 10 mile ocean leg (hypothetically downwind). Thanks.

Gear Talk / Paddle Hand Grips

What hand grip do you prefer and why?

I prefer the more rounded type as opposed to the more T shaped type like Werner has. I'm curious to hear what others think about this. I'm a very experienced paddler in waves of all sizes and race a bit with a first place in a 22 miler around Atlantic City in June and took 4th in the 27 mile elite race around Manhattan last Friday.

I wrote Werner about this and they said people are fine with the grip they have. I would not buy one (werner) due the grip, but I was given one for free (spanker), and used them to race. Great blade and shaft, but the grip gives me blisters. I also find the rounded grip feels more natural and gives a what I'd call a more precise interface between my hand and the grip while surfing.

Events / Waterman League Sunset Pro ~ Stoke and Video

I'd like to share some stoke about the Waterman League and its' StandUp World Tour - Sunset Pro competition this past winter. I was fortunate to be on Oah'u when it took place. I didn't know about it until the last minute and tried to enter as an alternate to no avail despite the very helpful and accommodating contest staff. I did get to SUP great Kammies the first day of the event with some innovators in the sport, and had many great sessions at Sunset that whole week and a wild one at Haleiwa that Wednesday, always with a stoked progressive crew and positive vibes.

As someone who has surfed for over 30 years, with extensive travels,  the thing that really stood out about the event to me was the natural stoke and Aloha. The camaraderie reminded me of the way surfing was long ago before hyper-commercialization kicked in. There was a sense of being a part of something most people didn't understand. Everyone was sort of figuring things out as they went along.  There was a very down to Earth supportive energy. That's an important element of surfing that often gets overlooked in the mainstream today, to live Aloha. Like the fortune to SUP surf itself, I consider the above-mentioned experience as an unexpected gift.  I want to say Mahalo to the folks behind the Waterman League and everyone who helped make the event what it was.

I was able to film some footage from the Big Wednesday of the event and some from the final Friday. I've finally edited it and would like to share it with anyone who may be interested.

It's a 28 mile paddle around Manhattan in NYC to raise awareness and money for Autism charities and Surfers Environmental Alliance. It's a great cause and a challenging fun experience. I'm stoked I found this site. It's full of great stuff presented in a solid style. I saw the other thread with the video footage of Kainoa SUP at Pipe, and it tripped me out because I filmed some of the same waves that day. Kainoa McGee and Ikaika Kalama were using the advantages of SUP to score on the 2nd reef sets. I like the video I saw, and here's some more from my angle.
