Travel, Trips, Destinations / Re: Hood River 3 days next month?
« on: June 01, 2014, 07:08:51 PM »
Any suggestions for the best route going from HR to Anacortes if we want to see some of the Cascades over two days?  The plan is to drive up 97 to Chelan the first day and then hit 20 to head over the Anacortes the second.  Don't really have time for much but will be able to stop a few times to check things out.  Any suggestions for a better route and any short hikes or views we might not want to miss?  Thanks

Can't wait to leave next Saturday to head out that way.

From satellite images it looks pretty shallow (at least when the images were taken).  Looks like you might have a couple of miles of "river" (might be called a creek in some other places:):)) that you could explore.  Just keep in mind that you are probably better off going at low water the first time or two just so you know what is in the river.  Then you could step it up if the level rises some with rain.  If you do come to any "rapids" at all make sure, when you fall off the board, that you don't try to stand up in moving current.  And if you see any submerged trees at all ("strainers").   Stay away from them.
If you have never been in rapids you might want to look on youtube for a video on the correct swim position which is feet up away from rocks on the bottom that might snag them and feet downstream to deflect off of any rocks.  It looks pretty benign to me but as someone who has had their foot caught between two rocks in a rapid I can say you can never be too careful around whitewater of any class.

Thanks for all the info!  We are actually staying in the Best Western so glad they have good food.  I wish I could spend more time in each spot but we wanted to try and see as much as possible because who knows when we will ever get out there again.

Would love to do a downwinder or whitewater run while there.  Not sure if time will allow though.

So.  If you lived in HR and had two or three places to choose from to eat where would that be?  If you were going to get a beer which brewery would be the one you would choose?  If you had 3 or 4 hours to hike and didn't want to drive far where would you hike?  If you were planning to take some memorable photos where would you go?

We will be on vacation and can pretty much find fun things to do on our own but it would be helpful if someone could narrow some of the choices down.

Any suggestions for "shouldn't miss" things to do?  Good food, beer, hiking, drives, etc.

We may try to paddle but not sure if that will work out or not.

Heading from there up through the Cascades and then over to San Juan Islands and then Olympic National Park.   Two weeks to cover lots of territory.  Really looking forward to it.

SUP General / Recommendations for board size for newbie?
« on: April 12, 2014, 08:47:36 PM »
Not new to SUP but mostly only SUP on flat and whitewater.  Went out on the ocean a few weeks ago and loved it.  Just wondering what those in the know would suggest for a first board for ocean surfing?  200lbs with pretty good balance and felt comfortable on the board I used but it was a Starboard Avanti 11'2" and 36" wide so it was about as stable as a stationary dock:)  I had a blast but know something smaller will be more fun for me.  Want to buy something cheap used so a model that is a few years old is fine.

Travel, Trips, Destinations / PNW in June?
« on: January 31, 2014, 10:59:17 AM »
If anyone has any suggestions for must see spots for the road trip my wife are taking in June I would much appreciate it!  We plan to fly in to Reno, check out Tahoe for a day or two and then head north through northern California and Oregon to Washington.  There are sooooo many places that we think we want to see and are trying to narrow things down a bit.  We drove the coast of Oregon from California up through Cannon Beach area and went from there to Portland a few years ago.  So, we want to see some new areas.  Right now are thinking about heading out of Tahoe and either going through the mountains all the way up to Portland area (really want to see Crater Lake on the way but not sure what else through that part of the trip yet) and then back over to the coast just above Cannon Beach and up through Olympic Penninsula area and up and around Seattle.   The other thought since I have never been to San Francisco is to go straight over there from Tahoe and then up the coast to Eureka area and back over to the mountains and head north to Portland.  I know this is a huge area which makes it difficult to narrow things down but if anyone that has been there has suggestions it would be nice.  Thanks!
PS- Would like to SUP a bit while there but sightseeing is really the main focus.

SUP General / Ideas for western US SUP trips next spring.
« on: October 08, 2013, 02:11:20 PM »
So my wife and I are celebrating our 15 years anniversary next month.  We have decided to try to take two weeks out west driving around site seeing and SUPng some too next spring.   Just wondering if anyone knows of any outfits in the Pacific Northwest that put together multiple day SUP trips on a river?  Would love to do some SUPng/camping/whitewater (up to class IIIish.....East Coast class III:):):))

PS - Other states out west might also be possible because we have not set our exact route.  Just thinking we want to fly into Northern Cali and drive up towards Washington.  Could change plans to Colorado, Idaho, Montana, etc. etc.

Travel, Trips, Destinations / Re: Aquadilla PR in Ocotober?

JD

Actually we are staying in Rincon not aquadilla.  Do you have any suggestions for board rentals in the area and surf instruction?  Think we want to try out regular paddle surfing and SUP if possible while there.  Depending on conditions.

PS -  Is your company making a whitewater specific SUP?

Thanks...Bryan

Thought I would bump this up to see if anyone might have some info for me.  Aquadilla PR middle of next month.  Want to SUP flat and/or surf.  Any info appreciated on companies or hooks ups for boards and food spots too.

It's too bad we can't all follow this thought:

"Everyone who walks on our beach,  everyone who swims in our ocean becomes part of our family"

How cool would it be if everyone that shared in the feeling a wave or just cruising on flat water gives us could get along and realize that we are all part of a small group that appreciates the vital part water plays for us.  Regardless of the type of board you ride.

I feel a "kinship" with others who also feel the feeling that I do when I am in or on the water.
