SUP General / Re: Daily Cold Showers for Health

In the Victorian era, cold baths were used as a depression treatment.

I believe Laird was turned on to this by Wim Hof. There is some real science to back up his method.

I'm not the guy to answer your question, unfortunately, but I bet the people that can are going to ask what your experience level is and what boards you regularly used.

Sorry I could not make it but looks amazing. Crazy you can get surf like that in NYC

I listened to two great recent podcast episodes you may dig.

The first is from Paddlewoo/The Progression Project and is a conversation with Anders Ericsson. Anders coined the term deliberate practice and his research is the source of the "10,000 hours" rule-- the idea that you have to practice something for 10,000 hours to be a master. (That was popularized and simplified by Malcolm Gladwell.

Great conversation about how top level performs improve, and how to apply this to paddle surfing

The Stand Up Paddle Podcast interviewed John Puakea who coaches paddlesports Olympians and designs outrigger canoes. I wasn't crazy about the interviewer's style but there were some great tips about improving paddlestroke

Gear Talk / Intrigued by Apple Watch with LTE
« on: September 18, 2017, 08:50:15 AM »
Have not been particularly interested in prior iterations of the Apple Watch as I like my G-shocks and my Seiko. Was listening to a description of the recent keynote and they actually had someone call in from a paddleboard from her watch.

I actually like being unplugged on the water.  However, the ability to let my wife know if I'm running late, call for help for myself or someone else, or even take work calls when I'm not carrying my phone is pretty appealing.  (I'm a physician and have to carry my phone in a dry bag frequently on weekends).

Curious to know what you all think.

NorthEast / Where to learn to SUP surf in RI
« on: September 15, 2017, 07:45:03 AM »
I'm interesting in learning to surf on my sup and live in CT. Looks like the closes places to go are in RI. I realize that we are heading into the time of the year when conditions are above my pay grade but want to see if I can get some time in this fall. I'm a novice-- have been prone surfing a few times and have a fair amount of time paddling on the sound.

Looking at Misquamicut and Narragansett to start but welcome other suggestions.

I was wondering if you all could suggest the best places for rank beginners such as myself. Need to have parking available but happy to pay. Bonus points if you know anyone who could give me lessons or if you would be willing to do so yourself. Happy to pay for time and expertise.

Feel free to PM if you like.

Gear Talk / Re: Best Tie Down Straps?
« on: September 10, 2017, 09:15:27 AM »
I stole my rope system from Dave Kalama who has perfected his to a ridiculous degree. For a double rack on a tall vehicle, it's fantastic. I cut a length more than double what I need for one side, then tie it in the middle of the rack. I leave it in place all the time. No need to climb around getting straps in place and I can get a rope onto a board immediately in wind. The method for loading is to toss both front ropes across to the side you are NOT loading on, back ropes hanging down in the middle. Slide the board on from the back and flip a back rope on as you slide it forward. Now you can secure the board without letting go of it until you have the rope tight. go to the front rack and toss both ropes across and tie one. Load the second board and toss the second front rope across.

Cheap half-inch rope lasts for years, looks good, and won't crush your rails, won't buzz, doesn't mark up your board. I have no idea why people use straps.
Pono do you a link to any video or photos showing this?

Looks awesome and I know the area well. Think I need to work on my skills (and get a bigger board) before I roll with the big dogs.

Your SIC Bullet should be fine. I did few good runs on lesser boards.
I intend to join off-shore as well.

Since you already know the area, you know the conditions are good so no reason not to join.

Thanks for the encouragement guys. Give a heads up when you are going.

Other than the board, what else do I need? Have a 3/2 wetsuit, PFD, and camelback. (And obviously a paddle and leash).

I'm not an expert on inflatables but from browsing elsewhere on the Zone it seems like it may be better to stick with a better known company.

Gear Talk / TAHOE SUP ALPINE 11 TRAVEL READY PACKAGE😧
« on: August 28, 2017, 05:20:56 PM »
I just came across this board and am curious if anybody has information or owns one. It looks pretty cool and complete but not sure on quality.

I saw a couple of posts but no responses and a few years back.

It's a complete package AND inflatable.

Anyone?

Thanks!
I'm not familiar with this. Post a picture or a link and people could maybe help you more.

I think the common thread through most of these is....I was going to say stupidity but that may be too harsh...ignorance for sure...and sometimes stupidity and arrogance.

I've rarely had a good response from someone I've told should have a PFD, leash, paddle backwards...whatever. A polite thanks from a couple but from most I sense "mind your own business".

I was paddling in our little bay and I saw two teenage girls on a single 10 ft board with one paddle, no leash, and no PFDs. There was an off shore wind and they were thankfully headed in. I asked them if they were OK.  They said yes and that they were headed in. Fortunately they got in without difficulty but I put on my Dad hat and explained that it was a dangerous situation with the wind conditions. They said thank you but I'm not sure how carefully they were listening.

Gear Talk / Re: Boards & Speed
« on: August 28, 2017, 01:18:57 PM »
Nope, that's how drag works. Small boards have low skin friction but high wave drag. You might not be seeing this though, you might just be experiencing deformation of the inflatable hull that makes it draggier when you push it hard.
Bill is that why longer waterlines make boards faster?
