How do you know he’s doing the London event?

He announced it on his Facebook page last week [June 18]. Probably invited by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. . ;)

Would be cool to see if he's using the same 14'0 SIC RS in London for the River Thames event..

Gear Talk / Re: Bungee Mounts
« on: February 12, 2018, 06:28:03 AM »
5-6 years is the longest I can track so far. The original board I had these on got ripped off a couple years back and there were no signs of any peel up or anything diminishing at that time which was 5-6 years in. The other boards I have them on are anywhere from 1-6 years in. They really are the best option I have found out there. Can even put them on hugging the rail where the surface is not flat with flawless results.

5-6 years and curved-rail-mountable sounds pretty good to me!
I"m guess there's variable types of mount adhesive for carbon / fiberglass / inflatable board.

You might consider these sometime... I find them way better than the ez plugs... I also just noticed they have a version for inflatables.

How long have you had these on? It looks like a nice clean solution for my next ultra carry. Got a 130km race in France Dordogne Intégrale and need to take supplements in dry bag.

You should be fine with stock FX in good weather. Plan your departure well. Be visible. And enjoy the trip. https://youtu.be/BJ3JIhDmNVU

SUP Safety / What would you do?
« on: January 27, 2018, 01:33:10 PM »

This video's been circulating around the web. I couldn't help but cringe. The accident in Oregon involves 3 people on a fishing boat and another speeding boat speed crashing into their craft. I couldn't help but wonder, "What if that was me on my SUP?"
What would you do if that was you on your sup. Try paddle away? Unleash and bail to avoid entanglement on propellers? Be happy that you got your pfd on you? Would that boat even notice that he crashed onto a SUP?? Argh.. Scary thoughts..
The 3 got lucky despite the fact that they didn't have their FPDs when they took the leap of faith. Great message at the end of the video btw.

Gear Talk / Which is the most gentle paddle on your body and joints?
« on: January 19, 2018, 12:36:28 AM »
Almost an impossible question to answer when it comes to paddle choice as it becomes our body extension on water.

I've tried many myself purely for ultra distance use. When the paddle is engaged to propel you forward for a 9-hour long race, it's shape, size, length and build becomes critical. In between trainings, the search is also refined to how you use the given paddle in hand in different conditions. Standing on a 24" narrow board, paddling efficiency and constant change of envelop (adaptation) is key to finding the fitting paddle for the mission.

Go out and try as many possible in various conditions. And over a longer period of time. I don't thing the shoulders can tell the difference after an half hour demo. Instead try it for a week.

Smaller blade have been the choice most take - only if you practise proper technique. It is key. A good paddler can generate as much force on the smaller head than one with a bigger blade. If not executed well, the bigger blade would not only demand more power from the paddler but also lose lots of its energy and power transfer due to poor technique. With proper technique it becomes a win win with smaller paddles. Bad luck if you're on the bigger propellers.

You can go as gentle as you want. Carbon flex or fiberglass. It all comes down to how you use it as your hands' extension.

I'd recommend listening to Johnny Puakea's description of proper paddling. Yes we can get the muddy feeling even from small blades. And that's a good thing.

Paddles are more personal than board choice. So choose wisely.

Gear Talk / SIC Maui 2018 catalog now online!
« on: January 17, 2018, 12:09:30 AM »
Looking forward to try the RS soon. I hope it's as versatile as they claim it to be for ultra distance races here. Last time I spoke to Mark, he reckons that its more versatile than the X-pro in various flatwater conditions. And he knows there's no better place to test that than the 220km Sup 11 City race.

Looking forward to test the RS23 against the Pro-Lite!

Gear Talk / New 3D camera that you'll actually like.
« on: January 09, 2018, 05:26:49 PM »
It's not 3D but 360 action cam.

That said. Not many 360 waterproof cameras around to date. GoPro Fusion, 360Fly 4K and Garmin VIRB 360 are recommended few. But there is also the older Samsung Gear 2015 version which  shoots in 4K and today sells at less than $100. Its not waterproof but separate underwater housing can be found floating around on eBay for $30+.

These cams adds a great perspective to shoot paddle/surf session. But price varies. The Fusion is $730 with the need for 2 fast microSD cards. Garmin VIRB 360 at $800 adds geeky Metadata. We use the 360Fly 4K here for paddle coaching. It makes a great visual tool for paddle training. Battery wise it's the longest one lasting 1.5 hrs even in the freezing cold.

SG50SUP, looks like they haven't updated the event site yet with results. Most info has been coming from the Red Paddle Co Facebook page.

Curious who all participated and details on  distances carried out. Really cool that RED pulled off with its 1st World Championship.. They did quite some work to promote it. Wonder if it's going to be an annual thing.

Looks like a fun one. Where do you see the list of countries that participated in this event? Are results posted online?

Gear Talk / Re: Boards on a roof
« on: August 22, 2017, 08:34:18 PM »
I had 3 driving through Germany's autobahn. You have to be responsible. Boards are more secured if placed in boardbags for less or zero chance of slip / damage from pressure points. I used 5 cables to hold them down securely. Didn't want to endanger others on the road. And you have to be certain at rope work. Check your tie-downs every now during the drive and all should be ok. I drove with mine for 8 hours across Europe.

Gear Talk / Re: What size paddle?

Mostly comes down to paddle technique no matter the paddle size. Johnny Puakea shared and explained on the Standup Paddle The World Radio Show few weeks ago which is priceless information.
