Well done Dub-G, looks good and I'm glad you like the handle!

Mahalos for the positive feedback and providing a great functional SUP GRIP! A true example of Live Aloha!
Used it in the surf yesterday and it makes carrying my SUP comfortable vs. cumbersome.
Have a great New Year and hope to be able to thank you in person if I get back to O'ahu. Peace.

Nice install. The BP grips are really nice.

Mahalo! Yeah, I'm stoked with it and grateful to BP for it. It's one of those small things that most company's couldn't be bothered with because demand and profit margin is low, but it's an item that can make a huge difference to someone who is passionate about the sport. It definitely boosts the SUP common good and represents spirit of Aloha.

When I installed mine, I considered doing it that way, but I was worried about either using too much epoxy and getting it all over the pad, or too little, causing possible gaps where water could get in.

I was also concerned about the epoxy heating up and melting the foam inside the board, so I used Gorilla Glue instead which worked great. Then I epoxy/glassed around and over the flange. This required removing a few inches deckpad around the handle, which added more time to the job and in the end, showed seams where the pad was removed and glued back on.  Other than that, I'm very happy with how mine came out and I love the handle.

Cool. Yeah, I put the old handle on too, same way. If done precisely, the bottom lip of the flange meeting the deck of the board provides good enough contact/seal that no deck glassing is needed if epoxy is used as anchoring agent. Makes the job relatively easy. Cutting deck pad exactly also enables for that seamless transition between flange and deck pad.

I gotta say Big Thanks to Blue Planet for designing and making this handle!

Dub_G, when you say "inserted a wetted out piece of cloth that was cut to fit perfect around all sides when the grip was fully inserted"...

Is that the piece that you then pushed down into the cavity so it "surrounded the grip on all sides" when pushed down?

Yes, and it was a tight fit, slipped in no resistance but snug.

Also, after you pushed the grip into the cavity, and epoxy came out of the seams, I assume it got on to the pad? If so, how did you clean the epoxy off the deck pad?

Thanks... I'm beginning to feel a project coming on...

I managed to estimate amount of epoxy very well, so just enough came out to know it sealed thoroughly. I didn't even have acetone handy, but a rag still removed any excess perfectly. I did use a utility knife to carefully trim any epoxy lip that formed before epoxy went rock hard -- did it at about a 45 degree angle to flange. Came out even nicer than i expected. It's a well designed handle, so that made the whole process smooth.

I think the key was to remove weight on handle when epoxy had set up but was still pliable. Some epoxy had expanded out into grooves on deck pad a little, but I used a flat head screwdriver to filet/wedge between that epoxy ooze and pad with slow even pressure and semi hard epoxy separated from pad easily.

Did you install that yourself? It looks very clean. I installed SUP GRIP handles on two of my boards. It was a lot of work.

It looks like yours was installed with the flange over the deckpad. That certainly would make the job easier, but I have to wonder about how watertight it will be like that. Was it set in the board with epoxy and glass? How was it done?

.
Yes, I installed it myself. Thanks. It was pretty easy with a router and right bit. Yes, set into board with epoxy and glass. The flange is flush to the deck -- no pad between flange and board -- she's definitely watertight. I traced the hand grip, flange side down on deck pad, cut that outline with utility knife and removed deck grip inside outline cut. Used heat gun to make removing deck pad cut out easy.

Then I centered bottom of hand grip in that area and traced an outline of that. I routed out the areas on both sides of old hand grip staying in traced lines I made, without damaging old grip. Then I used vice grips to loosen and remove old grip by rocking motion -- I wanted to save old grip for possible future use. I cleaned up the remaining rough edges from that step with the router and to proper depth.

I poured some epoxy in bottom of cavity, filled any voids in sidewall of cavity with thickened epoxy, wetted out all contact surfaces in cavity and on hand grip, put some wetted out cloth in bottom of cavity to fill small gap from removing old grip, and inserted a wetted out piece of cloth that was cut to fit perfect around all sides when was grip fully inserted.

I put some epoxy (puddle) on that already wetted out cloth, then I inserted new grip on top of that into cavity pushing the cloth into cavity so it surrounded the grip on all side when all the way down. Make sure to sand the area of the boards deck (between cut pad edge and cavity) that meets the bottom of the flange for watertight seal. I had some epoxy come out along seams, cleaned that up then put weight on inserted grip. Removed weight before epoxy totally went hard, but was def set up, and cleaned it all up. Cutting the deck grip pad perfect results in that inlay appearance. The flange is exact thickness of deck pad on my board so its flush across flange and pad.
