Title: Carrying your SUP in or on your RV?
Post by: jdubdvr on July 13, 2010, 04:46:09 PM
Does anyone here have any pointers or pictures of how they transport their SUP while using an RV. I really dont want to put it on top or inside, what I am really looking for is some pics of a hitch mounted vertical rack system, also, anyone in socal know anyone who makes such a thing? I was told about Nalusurf in HB but I dont know if they are around anymore.
                         Thanks in advance.

I have seen a rack like this listed on Craigslist.  This might work for something 9' and under, but anything taller will be taller than the RV.  We have an Airstream Westfalia at 11'5" tall and once you get the height of the hitch anything much above 9' will be really tall.  OK for surfing SUPs but not flatwater.  You could use a Malone Micro Sport trailer as we used this for kayaks, or the Yakima Rock n Roll.  These trailers are just basically a Yakima rack with a long tongue.

We are actually thinking of getting inflatables just for this purpose.

Cheers, Jill

Couple ways to go:
-I had a welder build one for me that hold boards vertically and like Jill said it's good for the surfing SUPs only.  I put my big boards on the roof but there's definately a techniques to it!  I'll post up some photos later.
-Steve Boehne and a lot of tandem surfers have used racks on the side of vans for years but an RV would be a little too wide, esecially with a fin in.
-Another option would be the Thule Hullavator.  I see them on a lot of Sprinters but for an RV you would probably need a ladder to reach the cradle.

I designed and built the "wheelless trailer" years ago...

Hullivator from a few years back, before the Sprinter...

I bought a stock Yakima Rack System from the windsurf shop in Belmont Shore CA... put it on top of the RV.  Jamboree 31M... climb up the back ladder, walk over, and hand boards down to Jr.... super easy... carried five standups and five shortboards no problem... my wife was really stoked... no more wax in the RV.

I would send you a picture or pictures... but we sold it earlier this year as we were just not using it anymore... and spending all of our spare time locally...

Just be sure to have the RV wiring schematic when mounting... or, better yet, take it to your dealer and have him mount it!

Tim

There was a company called Nalusurf that made RV board racks but I think their website is down.  I have a friend that has one that was on an RV when he bought it and it looked pretty nice and could be adjusted to hold bikes as well as boards.  However, they were pretty pricey and after seeing a lot of home-made setups locally I designed my own.  I had a welder make a "T" rack attached to a hitch extender and used a cargo tray as the base so I can remove it and just use the tray standalone if needed (the tails are held in place by a removable box I built out of scrap wood).  The "T" height is just below the rear window so the view is unobstructed when the boards are off.  I haven't done any long trips yet but so far it's holding up fine.  Boards are 8'8", 9'6", and 10'6".  Probably anything over 11' should go up top.

I will not argue that WarDog was the first.  The man is a pioneer.

Wish I knew Frank did welding - I would have called him a long time ago.

This is exactly what I am looking for, any rear view shots w/ no boards? I already have a cargo carrier so Im halfway there. Relatively simple design, cool!
