Title: Ideas for a diy roof rack paddle box?
Post by: moonsup on March 19, 2017, 04:22:47 PM
I'm looking for ideas to make a sup paddle roof rack box. Everything Yakima or Thule makes is entirely to wide for my needs. Thanks

Paddle bag strapped to the roof racks (or are you looking for something lockable)?

Home depot has a 11cu ft box that's 21 inches wide and 280 bucks.  http://www.homedepot.com/p/SportRack-11-cu-ft-Horizon-Cargo-Box-SR7011/203672565?MERCH=REC-_-PIPHorizontal1_rr-_-203672566-_-203672565-_-N

or a soft bag for 45 bucks http://www.homedepot.com/p/Highland-10-to-15-cu-ft-Expandable-Weather-Resistant-KarPak-Car-Top-Bag-1039800/203340322?MERCH=REC-_-rv_gm_pip_rr-_-203340322-_-203340322-_-N

I know it sounds weird but I look at Home Depot and Lowes for this kind of stuff. Generally cheaper, and you can pick it up free at your local store.

Alternatively, Check your local plastic pipe guys for offcuts of 12" PVC. You can use it round with caps, or slice it lengthwise and make two low profile carriers with a piece of plywood glued or strapped to the pipe half. The Funmobile in Maui had four 8" pipes under the rack to carry sails, masts and stuff. Painted them red. I was going to do one flat black one and fill it with water for hot showers, but never got around to it.

@PonoBill

Nice looking setup in your photo.

BTW, good friendly looking pooch in your photo as well. I'm assuming your best pal.

Old picture, The jeep is long gone, and regrettably, so is Sam. And now we have Zack, who looks almost exZackly like him, and seems to have picked up most of Sam's regrettable habits--the strongest evidence of reincarnation I've ever experienced.
