Title: Focus Rawson 8-4?
Post by: exiled on March 12, 2017, 08:28:12 PM
Anyone have any long term experience with any of the Focus Rawson Sup line, especially the 8-4? How do they hold up durability wise? The older carbon ones are going for reasonable prices, so I'm curious.

I don't have a Rawson model, but a Torpedo in the ACT carbon construction, I bought it third hand.  It takes a beating and is just fine and is nice and light and easy to transport. I wished my torpedo had more thinned out rails but that is the only thing I would change, but I'm intermediate level sup surfer.

Hey Exiled, I've got a Focus Rawson 8'4 in the brushed carbon , other than the typical issues with Focus fin boxes the board is solid. My board has had the fin boxes repaired several times and still surfs like a dream. Rails take a good amount of punishment and this is the only board I do not have RailSaverPro on. Everything else has also held up nicely on the board (deckpad, nose of the board, etc).

Originally these boards went for some serious cash but used you should be able to find one between $500-$800.

You're talking about problems with Futures fin boxes, right? Or do Focus boards have their own set of fin box problems?

Old stock of carbon boards are going for ~$1200, which isn't too bad for an all carbon board if its well constructed. Not seen any used for sale around these parts, so either they didn't sell or no one who has one is parting with it.

Yes Futures, but for some reason every Focus board I have had has had issues with at least 1 if not multiple fin boxes. Current board (8'4 Rawson) and my last Focus (9'6 Torpedo) both experienced fin box damage, fin box leaked. I mostly surf a beach break and never ride the board all the way onto the sand, so I am not sure if it has to do with pressure or other aggressive pounding, but once repaired they seem fine. Maybe someone like Mr. Big could explain it better as I think he had or still has a Focus that also had a fin box issue?

I taco'ed my 8'8 Torpedo due to user error but my 8'4 has been rock solid.

Below is a video of an older Focus 8'10" Torpedo and since that time, I think the Torpedo is now an 8'9" model.

The link to Focus site showing the Torpedo models is below if you're intereted.

$1200 for anopld design with questionable fin boxes sound pricey

We have new 2016 Fanatic AllWave/ProWave & Stuuby LTD (Innegra Carbon sandwich) with no issues construction/component/Performance wise for $1199

Rawson makes great designs, Focus has had construction issue

Just a thought

My issues with a Focus fin box was on a 14' Bluefin. The Rawson  shapes are awesome. Have seen NOS for 800 - 900!

I have a Rawson 8-8 core flex model and I love the board.  I have had it for about 8 months and no issues with construction. It was quite pricy

If you want the shape just go straight to Pat. This is a terrific board, custom, top construction and he shipped to me all the way over here. In the states the shipping would be easy.  The Focus quality issues are another story.
8-4x30 120l. I'm 6' 195lbs.

J, Who knew. I had an Impala SS 8'2" x 32" x 4 3/8" x 127 CV that was a "magic" board. Impala SS slightly different than the Raw1.

The only Impala SS to make into production was the 8'8".

There's a pic somewhere on the zone..

STC made a vid of Tom G. and the board as well. I sold it. Many many waves in that beauty. It now looks like Beashos old board. Our shorebreak is similar to yours J!

Custom order might be the right call. Pat Rawsons shop is about 10 min away, so shipping shouldn't cost too much. Its just that the 8-4 is pretty much what I would want to order anyway, so getting it in carbon would be nice since I'm rough on boards.
