Title: Jimmy Buffett to Open Margaritaville Retirement Communities
Post by: Tom on March 05, 2017, 01:32:48 PM
The Lawrence Welk retirement community is about 50 miles north on San Diego and very successful, especially with my parents generation, who are all dead or dying. I use to joke with some of my developer friends that we should by it and re-label it as a home for our generation, maybe the Rolling Stones retirement village. Guess I was just ahead of my time,

Jimmy Buffett has announced plans to break ground on a string of retirement communities inspired by his classic "Margaritaville" and its themed chain of restaurants and resorts.

For Parrotheads "55 and better" seeking an "active adult community" while wasted away again, the Latitude Margaritaville will open its first branch in Daytona Beach, Florida, with similar communities also in the works.
"Inspired by the legendary music and lifestyle of singer, songwriter and best-selling author Jimmy Buffett, your new home in paradise features exciting recreation, unmatched dining and FINtastic nightlife," the Latitude Margaritaville site says.
The $1 billion project, a collaboration between Margaritaville Holdings and Minto Communities, aims to create 7,000 homes in Daytona Beach; since announcing Latitude Margaritaville two weeks ago, the property has already received over 10,000 registrations, Minto senior vice president Bill Bullock told Good Morning America.
“It’s going to be a very fun place,” Bullock added. “We expect our first residents to be living in the community by late summer of 2018.”

The Daytona Beach branch's sales office will open in late 2017, with model homes opening in early 2018.

2018 is shaping up to a busy year for Buffett as the singer's greatest hits will serve as the inspiration for a Broadway musical titled Escape to Margaritaville. While the musical won't arrive on Broadway until spring 2018, the show will debut this May with a six-week run at La Jolla, California's La Jolla Playhouse.
Following that, Escape to Margaritaville will play for audiences in New Orleans, Houston and Chicago before setting course for New York.

How's the surf at Daytona Beach?

Not bad, seems like the surf is a little more consistent in Cocoa Beach though--at least it was when I was there. Better get comfy with the notion of Bull Sharks though.

I expect this to be wildly successful. Everyone wants to be Jimmy Buffet. Who is, by the way, Warren Buffet's first cousin. And yes, he put most of his investment bucks in Berkshire Hathaway, and so he done good. And yes, he's into SUP and surfing in general.

I wonder how much those homes will cost in those communities? I'm guessing an arm, a leg, three fingers and two toes if you get my drift.  ;)

My guess would be not cheap, but not ridiculous. Upper middle, with the variation typical in gated communities. Little houses on small lots interspersed with bigger houses, and some monstahs in the prime locations. I'd expect the HOA fees to be substantial.

Here's a link to Minto Communities
http://www.minto.com/

I'd guess they'd stick with their existing concept and market, just add a bit or Jimmy Buffet marketing to the mix. I personally  will wait for the Rolling Stone Estates.

I clicked on the link and what caught my eye was the Glen Agar ad. The key word was "From"........1.4 million. I know Toronto is high on real estate properties, but I have a feeling the price for Florida will be much higher in my opinion.

You and me both Tom....we can be neighbors...we just won't talk politics.... ;)

I can almost guarantee Florida will be cheaper than Toronto....if I'd bought the same house I just bought here down in (most of) Fla it would have been 30-40% cheaper easily...Toronto...probably 30-40% higher or more.

No, Minto builds big mixed price gated communities. In florida most of the detached stuff starts at $190K.

I thought Jimmy Buffet dried out.  Maybe he should call it 7-Upville.

To each his/her own but as someone who never got into him or the whole parrot head scene, this seems like a nightmare.

And apparently, he surfs too.

A buddy of mine went on a surfing/kitesurfing trip in the caribbean, and they scored killer waves at a remote pointbreak off some small island.  There was a guy there who had his own Jet ski caddy to ferry him back to the line up WSL-style when he was done with a wave.  You guessed it: Jimmy Buffett.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind being him.

Now if Timothy Leary had built a retirement community, getting old would be something to look forward to, and thru, and beyond.  Chances are you'd never know you even died, or if you died, I like that, it could be called "To Space and Beyond".
Golf would be really fun, "watch me turn this white golf ball into a long white rope with my driver".

I've reconsidered, Timothy Leary was not a very active person, so I'm tossing that idea to the curb.  Need somebody who was more active, and could carry some of that activity into the retirement community, activity like pranking, or being a merry prankster, enter Ken Kesey!
The community could be called "Kesey"s Bus Stop", or just "The Bus Stop".  It could even have a motto, taken after Kesey's motto of "You're either on the bus, or off the bus", but it would be  "You're either on the bus, or dead".
I like that much better.  8)
