Title: So stoked...bought a new house
Post by: stoneaxe on February 16, 2017, 10:49:55 AM
And it's just a couple miles to a beach in either direction...... ;D. I'll be driving past the beach  I call my local break at least a couple of times/day so I'll soon understand when and why it breaks (very fickle and rarely breaks but when it does its all time) Time to get going on my electric bike build. This is going to change my water time immensely....I'm pumped.

Big 2 car garage with a nice workbench already there...can't wait to setup a decent shop. Plenty of room for board storage. Really, really well maintained ranch that's move in ready, we plan on doing over one small bathroom and maybe a little landscaping and that's it...probably add solar and build a greenhouse/conservatory too. We should be moving in around the end of April....zoner house party! And if I can talk to boss into it (not hard) we may do the CCBC pre-party here. Restart the tradition of the 1st year carb loading spaghetti dinner....minus the 4 bottles of wine.... :)

"Big 2 car garage with a nice workbench already there"

My values may be a bit different because I don't live where it snows, but I'll share my motto about garages.
The best way to ruin a perfectly good garage is to park a car in there.  ;)

Congrats!

Awesome bud, you deserve it and hopefully I'll get to enjoy some surf there as soon as get it all dialed in as well as a CCBC carb load dinner !!!

If you need any help moving or transplanting your Koi pond let me know, I'd be glad to help.

Good for you man. Good deal. You been watching for awhile.
I'm with Weasel on the garage deal as well. I guess it depends on how big the garage is tho. Never have parked one in here tho this winter I got a golf cart in it that I have to move out if I got to work on a sled or the tractor/blower.

Garages are for cars?...... ;). It's an oversized two car...my wife will park in there in the winter at least. One side for her the other for me. it also has a good sized storage shed in the backyard so all the yard tools and lawnmower, rototiller etc. will be in there. Plenty of space for my shop even with her car in there. I plan on building a real good cyclone vac system with ports for all my tools so it should keep the sawdust down.

Thanks all....Derek I'll take you up on that though we'll likely have lots of help....moving party!

here's the house.

haha so right. I'd never let a car ruin a good board storage. My buddy built a level up in his garage for boards, and added an elevator....and ac for the boards.

Awesome Stone, good for you. What's the break?
Did it also have a bomb shelter? ;-)

The outdoor shower sold it.... :D

No bomb shelter....if bombs ever start falling they'll hit the nuke plant down the road..... :o

Tough to even call it a break it happens so infrequently...though I did get Magic seaweed to add it to their list a few years back. http://magicseaweed.com/Plymouth-Beach-Surf-Report/4525/ .
Best timing for it is as a noreaster pulls away or a big storm up in the Canadian maritimes send some swell down.....very narrow window from the northeast but I'm pretty sure the wave on the outside of Browns Bank (at the end of the 3 mile long barrier beach) is one of the longest waves on the east coast when it works.
This is the same beach but inside the cove (nearest my new house) during a noreaster back in 2008 (winds were actually gusting to around 50 despite what I put in the video). I've had overhead glass there on a couple of occasions but no pics. I see kiteboarders and windsurfers there occasionally but I've only seen one other person surf it...shared one of the big glassy days with a longboarder.

My wife and daughters thought I was going to kill myself so decided to babysit and video the mayhem. There are a bunch of shoals between 100 and 300 yards out with channels between....more like a reef break than a beach break which is nice...though you can't tell from the blown out chop in the video. At 57 secs in the video you can see a point of land at the far left. Browns bank starts about 1/4 mile off that point and loops in a big 2+ mile crescent towards shore...when it's working there are 1/4 mile waves there.... ;D. Great striper and blue fishing in the cove too.

I'm the red dot.

that looks sweet. You gotta start kiteboarding. Super fun...and way more fun that trying to catch waves in 30mph wind.  :)

Very cool, dude. Did you sell the old one?

Four bottles of wine would be OK for the carbo loading as long as there's more than four people. And my recollection is that it was five.

That looks like a fantastic deal (at least by California standards) that close to surfable waves.  Stuff in Beasho and Tall Dude's neighborhoods are all flirting will 7 digits.  Even an outdoor shower... man this place is ready made for a zoner campout! ;D

They'll definitely be a zoner party sometime this year. I shouldn't have too hard a time convincing the boss...she was famous for her parties when were kids and still loves a good one....she used to do bands on the roof, 500+ people kind of affairs. She gave me a send off party when I went to live with Bill as a stupid teenager. It took police from 7 surrounding towns to break it up..... ;)

No we're keeping the old one. Jacqui is going to rent it from us until she can afford it or until we croak whichever comes first.... :P. The plan is to keep this until we fully retire then sell it and buy a cottage walking distance to the beach a little further south. We won't be here year round at that point. Travel the country a bit in the winters with a camper for a year or two and find another cottage someplace warm....split our time after that between them....the typical snowbird thing. Midcoast Florida likely...hanging with DW and the rest of the crew down there.... :)

I've thought about kiteboarding but I'd probably kill myself or lose some pieces.

I actually hope to go out in those kind of conditions far more often now that I'm close....that was shortly after the 1st CCBC. I was just  sitting here thinking what a crazy transformation that video represents.  And it was conditions not much milder than those where I found the most therapy....loved my choppy workouts. A little more than a year before that I was 80 lbs (at least) heavier and had a hard time friggin walking sometimes. This is the 1st time I've told anyone this, not even my wife,  but I cried on the water that day. Before Bill gave me that 12-6 in the video I had pretty much resigned myself to a somewhat shitty existence. I tried hard to keep a good face on it but it truly sucked and nothing the docs or PT had done worked. I remember sitting on my board in the middle of the chaos....and I had never in my life felt so alive. It was overwhelming...I thought about where I'd been and where I was and started to laugh....until I started to cry. Anyone that knows me will tell you I'm an emotional sap. But there are only a handfull of times in my life I've ever felt so thankful. Looking forward to being able to grab more of that.

Read most of it but stopped reading at " zoner party! "
And now that you've given the address " red dot "  The preperations can begin. 😁
Seriously though, congratulations on the new purchase stoneaxe and like taunt said, " take up kite-surfing so you can make the most of those windy days."

Can't get over the idea that I'm going to be c lose to my go to spot for most of my paddling...especially in the early days. I'm more apt to go look for surf these days but have many awesome memories out there.

Some pics
A panorama, some surf shots..head high or so that day but a bit mushy, a sunset of one of the houses on the outer beach, a closeup of the point in the video during my typical CCBC training paddle 12 mile loop, another CCBC training paddle with some of the 2011 crew into the harbor, some pics my daughter took during a snowstorm...i always called it proof that sasquatch SUPs.

Congrats, what a nice spot!  I live about a mile from Pleasure Point in Santa Cruz as the crow flies, but in Cali, of course, you add hundreds of dollars a square foot as you get closer to the coast, and add another couple hundred if you are right on the ocean.  Looks like a short hoof and you are on sand.

Wow... I don't know what I like more..... your new house or seeing that old video again! (the essence of what SUP means to so many of us)

Super stoked for you to have made this move Bobby! I wish you and your awesome family the happiest of times in the new SUP haven.
I'm pretty sure that the 1st time I met you was when you let me demo your Element at that same beach..... Your sacred ground!

Very cool... I am happy to assist in any way I can, since I am totally devoid of anything resembling responsibility.  I have a rather large van.

Congrats Stoney well deserved... you're going to love living near the ocean. I make it a point to drive by the ocean at least once a day it puts me in a mellow mood. You're going to need Jerry Evans to make you a shark sign for your outside shower.

Home inspection today didn't turn up any deal killers. It was tough going to it though....as I was driving to the house I pass a spot where you can see the whole bay....there were some waves (small) breaking both inside on the shoals and out at Brown's Bank.... :P

Can't tell you how excited I am that I'll be seeing the water there multiple times/day. I've been surprised a few times in there (I was surprised to see waves there yesterday). Sometimes it's really weird....no swell forecast, no surf anywhere else on the south shore on the cams. I head down with my 14'er for a training paddle...and find waist to chest glass.  I found the opposite as well of course, and more often...forecast for waves...but they don't reach that deep and I have to head elsewhere. Always frustrating to head one way and waste water time checking it only to find I have to go to another spot. Now it will simply be on my way and by seeing it more often I'll better understand the conditions that make it work. When it's on it's an all time wave and completely empty.

VERY cool!!!!

Bob:  Question:  You mentioned you'll an outdoor shower....curious to hear more about it.  Building one is HIGH on my list this spring as wifey is not currently thrilled that I run through the house to get upstairs to the bathroon in order to un-suit in the shower.  Is your shower 365 days/year?  Do you have both hot and cold water?  Any tips/hints for building greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Outdoor showers are one of the civilizing forces at work in the world. We have two in Maui, none in Hood River. I need to add one this year. The only factor working against a nice outdoor shower is that we do have one of the other civilizing forces in HR: A steam shower.

I'm looking forward to seeing the new place around this year's CCBC. Very happy for you Bob. You've wanted this a long time.

Post by: stoneaxe on February 21, 2017, 07:47:04 AM
The outdoor shower is nice but I'll need to change the valves on it so it can work in winter. If you want one for winter the valve needs to be self draining with only the handle outside (stem extension) so when you close it the water isn't left in the exposed piping. You also need a place for the water to drain....a bucket works but in this case there is a sump in the basement right next to where the valves are...I'll pipe the valve drains to the sump.

Ya think?....we've been looking for two years..... ::)

You can even stay with us bro...... :), you too creek.. :)

I mentioned possibly doing the CCBC paddler pre-party here to the boss...she said lets wait until we buy it before we plan anything.....party pooper..... ;)

If you're going to get all fancy, add recirculating hot water or a local tankless heater.

Title: Re: So stoked...bought a new house
Post by: stoneaxe on February 21, 2017, 10:11:58 AM
Sure if I want to pay to heat water 24/7 that I'll only use for 5 minutes a few times/week. You do remember what I do for a living? A tankless heater would still have to self drain. Much easier...and far cheaper....to just install self draining valves.

No worries about tangents in my threads Whatsup....some of the best conversations have come from hijacks.....I don't care if they go astray.

Thx Stoney...

Geez, the more I think of it I may just go with an outdoor shower stall up against the house and ditch the hot water idea....rather, just run off an outdoor spigot for cold water in spring, summer, fall and supplement with a RinseKit in the winter.  Sounds like the RinseKits will soon be coming out with a water heater option this spring.....there was a kickstarter for the hot water version last year and it sounds like they're supposed ship this spring......geeeee, sorta sounds like the SoloShot3.  I digress.

You may want to simply do what I do usually....I bring a Coleman 2 gal thermos filled with hot water with me to the beach...get 1/2 out of my suit and pour the contents over me and into the suit. The hot water makes the suit easier to get out of and holds off the chill while you change. I almost never drive home in my suit...though if I start riding my bike I will.... :)

Also...the rinsekit is overkill most of the time. I used to bring a Coleman camp shower with me before I lost it somehow....need to get another...cheap money. In winter fill it with HOT water and cover it in towels and your robe inside your vehicle.....after 3 hours of surfing it will still be at least warm. In the summer leave it on the roof of your vehicle in the sun...almost gets too hot to use if the sun is blazing. Surprisingly 5 gals is enough for a few people to rinse off if you use it sparingly.
