Title: Is it me?
Post by: stoneaxe on February 14, 2017, 07:52:57 PM
Do I smell funny or something....or is it some karmic thing that i have to balance before I get some decent waves. I've been either sick, injured, or both all fall and winter. Haven't gotten wet in months (as you can probably tell from the Trump and shitshow threads). The pictures of pumping surf all over New England have been driving me nuts. I think I'm finally able to get out this weekend....everything is working at the moment anyway. So what does the forecast show....waves all week...slowly getting smaller until they disappear completely on the weekend....... ::)

Ask creek....he'll tell you...I show up and the waves die....... :P >:(

it has been that way for me too  but not because of being sick like 8 weeks  of 7 day work week,  ugh.. then when I can go out it is victory at sea  stormy raining etc.  ENDTIMES !!!

I keep telling you to quit being so damn responsible.

"Stoney... there's waves!"
"Sorry creek... I gotta clean the coy pond today"

repeat after me..... "the priority from now on is surf"

Every day I take a look at the waves down at Galveston, Texas. Today the waves are almost non-existent. The Gulf of Mexico looks like a giant lake with glass like water conditions as far as the eye can see.

It's a combination of the two for me Outside...my company is so busy it's nuts. I'm lucky they let me work from home when my head is acting up or I'd be retired like creek... ;)

You spelled Koi wrong..... ;).....and with some luck we'll have less yard to take care of soon. And that still doesn't explain why it goes flat whenever I do have time and am able. Believe me..I can't wait to have more free time but right now I have to work...and being sick/injured/shit falling apart uses up most of my off time. I have decided this year that I'll simply take time without pay when sick and use my time for vacation and surf days. We didn't vacation at all last year because I was out so much. Now Barabados in a month...if I get skunked there I give up....and I'm taking off around the CCBC so I can enjoy this one like everyone else...maybe even stay on Cape for the weekend....which as you know we've never done.

I don't think I could do Texas nightwing...plenty to love down there but the lack of waves would be too much.....maybe with a wake boat.... :)

It's been a weird winter in SoCal. Other than a few good days with Tom at Sunset Cliffs, the surf has comprehensively sucked. I find myself going out in miserable little 2-4 foot bumps with the wind blowing and the swell coming from every direction. Puny rides, can't get enough power to turn. I have to learn to beat the shit out of little waves like Kalama does.

Oh, yeah. and it's crowded. Small, pukey and crowded.

It's 7:44 and I'm still at the house. 2-3 feet and fogged in. At least it looks glassy. Bah.

It's been the same for me this Fall/Winter, Stoney. Most of the big waves have come during the week when I'm working, and when we've got a decent swell on the weekend, I've been sick more often than not.

Looks like a nice swell coming on Friday, so of course, it's going to be windy. Ten feet on Saturday and no wind. Please, please, please, please.

Great.  Santa Cruz will be coots, codgers, kids and hot shots in massive crowds.  If they can get there, that is.  The roads in and out of Santa Cruz are in terrible condition, and they don't seem to be fixing anything since one union guy was killed by a dump truck on highway 17.

I got in three days last week, which with all the body soreness showed what bad shape I am in with all the rain, flu, and shut in.  Friday had some really big stuff, I don't know what the buoys were thinking when they read 7 ft and the waves looked to be 10+ in some sets, with short period washboard churn inbetween.

Saturday was blown out with offshore wind and walling.  Sunday was pretty nice, but smallish, but crowds with the aforementioned coot convoys and kids.

With the terrible roads, it looks like an extra hour at least to get back over to SC tomorrow from Pleasanton, if we make it at all.

Tourmaline and La Jolla Shores.  Two years ago, they were both fine.  Last year and this year especially not so good, in fact, garbage most of the time.  I just can't figure out how to surf it.  OTOH, some of the local SUP guys seem to have no such problems and actually say the surf has been pretty awesome.  Well, if that's the case, they never better visit RI when it's good, 'cause it'd probably cause em to suffer an instant embolism from the shock of seeing what "pretty awesome" really is and can be.

Man, do I sound angry and bitter or what?

California needed this rain......and boy are we getting it. Everyone has roof or window leaks where they never had them before. Beaches are eroding away, yet sand and sediment are spilling into the ocean at record rates. My mohs surgery is finally healed so I can go surf, but it pretty much junk out there. Soon enough we'll all be back in the line-up. Plenty of wave in the future.

It's my first season so I don't know a good winter season from bad but I thought it's been pretty good Dec - Feb. I'm at the shores a few times a week. Are you in the line up w/ everyone or off to the side w/ the rest of the paddlers? I've been told I need to check out other spots such as SanO and Cardiff as they don't really compare to South Mission & La Jolla Shores. I did try to paddle out my smaller board last Sunday but was having problems so I didn't stay out long. Water is getting a little colder but hopefully we get better conditions soon.

Stoneaxe - Your health is more important & hope you get some good conditions soon.

Nate: I sort of float around with the rest of the paddlers but if the lefts are working better where the longboarders are, I'll slide in there too.
My main and only problem with T and LaJ is they're exactly the kind of waves I can't surf worth a hoot.  Beach breaky, cross currents, rips, morning sickness, sectiony, close-outy, bumpy to ride, and so forth.  My complaints never cease and often leave me out of breath.  In RI, I can hold my own with most of the others.  In CA, I'm absolutely the worst guy in the water, day after day after goddamn day.  If you want to find me in the lineup, look for the sole SUPer who can barely stand to his feet and rarely catches a wave.  That's me.
It's enough to make me weep.
And to use words like 'me' and 'weep' too close together.

The problems up north in Santa Cruz are relentless storms with seldom organized waves, a lot of chaos, rip and washboard, short period churn with limited opportunities. There have been some good days, but not when I have been there, but they have been few.

November was great, then stuff just fell apart and haven't quite come back yet.

Ha Trump effect! Linter, have you tried switching up your boards & going wider than what your used to and how often are you out there? It shouldn't be too hard for you if your ripping it up in great conditions. Guess it is hit or miss but if you paddle out just right of the shores to Scripps on good days & get in at 6:00am, you catch some GREAT surf w/ long rides before the mob gets there.  I go 6:00-9am before it gets too windy & choppy. C ya out there.

ok ok ok...I do have some good news.

I injured myself sup surfing in six foot surf on June 1 2016.  Basically pile drove my left shoulder into my 9'5" Speeed board on a ten foot face wave when I landed at the bottom.  I've been surfing forever and it was a weird accident.  Many frustrating phone calls and doctors visits later I finally got an MRI and as I suspected, it was a very large tear needing full rotator cuff surgery.  The surgery was Sept 15th 2016.  Obviously I have not been supping or even in the water in close to ten months.  This was difficult as I'm 60, retired, in good shape, live close to the ocean and could sup surf whenever I wanted to...often up to four timers a week.

Many Physical Therapy visits under my belt and my own strengthening program the Doctor gave me the green light (yesterday) to start back up with paddling.  Basically 5 1/2 months after surgery.

Here's the good part...today was the first time paddle surfing since June 1st.  I went out slow on my knees and got to my feet on the outside.  The waves were small 1 to 3 feet but glassy.  Do I have to tell you how stoked I was just to be in the water, paddling around?  The catching of waves was just the icing on the cake!  I felt lie a kid!  I'm weak paddling right now and only managed to catch about five waves but I can tell my strength will come back and how grateful I am to be back in the water.

What am I saying?  Plain and simple, " We should all be thankful we can paddle out in the water."  It truly is a gift just to be able to stand up paddle!

I don't know. It was opened for a few days, but then I heard it closed again. I'll have to drive down there and check it out. I heard one of the footings on the palapa at Old Mans was half hanging off the beach drop-off. Maybe SanoSup or StandingDan have been there recently and know?

Stoneaxe..

I did not want you to think my post was directed to you.

I know you have gone through and continue to go through balance issues that must cause you much frustration.

In my haste to post about my stoke of just being able to sup on the water...It may have sounded insensitive.  I'm sorry.

I really enjoy your posts and experience you bring to the forum.  Hope you can get out on the water soon.

well i'm sure you've seen me in the line up, since dawn patrol is all i do.  i've got the biggest sup in the water, too.  i ain't the board.  it's the rider.  and the stinking surf.

No worries my friend...I'm stoked for you. I relate all too well  and understand completely how it feels getting back on the water after a long break. Reading your post had me remembering my 1st time out after my last forced break...my 1st fall into cold water...as it was seeping into my suit it chilled my skin but warmed my soul. Have a blast...I'll be getting wet shortly.

Less than ten good days here on Maui as well.  Fortunately we make lemonade out of the wind.  Today the downwinder on the south side was like riding Waikiki.  Last mile I never broke glide.  Had to paddle some but never fell out of the glide.  I'm stoked because I had my worst run ever on Tuesday.

No actually that would be me. I moved to a much lower volume board (for me anyway) and I suck.   I think with surfing you just have to go out everyday and give it a shot no matter how bad the conditions, you slowly learn and then you become the local guys who have no problem. The bottom has changed in the last two years at the south end of LJshores where most SUPs hang out, it's gotten so small waves break early and make kind of a confused mess.  Try up at the other side of the pier away from the short boarders or try The Slide early in the morning at the Slide when the tide is above 2' and wave height less than 5'. You might see me headed down there from the parking lot around 7;15 in the mornings.  There are also spots near Cardiff that actually have great shape and few surfers, best to do some exploring instead of following the crowd.

I've been exploring quite a bit, and enjoying the surfing more as a result. The river mouth break at Cardiff gets super crowded, but moving down the cliff yields some nice waves in uncrowded conditions until you hit the Swamis area. then it's ridiculous until you get a few hundred yards further north, and it's great. One or two guys out (and glaring at me) but plenty of good waves if it's breaking well.

I also discovered the next break south (I don't know the name) is a fine SUP wave, and continuing along the cliffs to Del Mar and beyond is excellent and uncrowded. It seems whenever I paddle that way that the wind is in my face all the way back, so it's a workout getting back to the truck.

Last, but not least, further south than Del Mar, hwy 101 drops down a long hill to a long stretch of beach. The parking along the beach is at a premium, there are always cars waiting for someone to pull out. I think it's mostly people wanting to walk the trail up to Torrey Pines who don't want to pay to park. The break starting from the base of the hill and going north is uncrowded, and the waves peel in a nice right--long ride. And if you paddle towards Del Mar there's no one out. Totally empty breaks as good as anything I've found in Cali, not a soul in them every time I've gone.

I'm still out of the water until the hole in the back of my neck heals, and we're getting ready to head back to the Hood. We're going to pack up tomorrow and do a slow cruise up the coast, surfing everywhere that looks good. Almost certainly a day or two in Santa Barbara (I'm hooked on Rincon) and a couple in Santa Cruz. We'll see how it goes after that. I've got a bagful of waterproof bandaids, and the thing has stopped draining, so I think I'm more or less good to go.

Try Mussel Shoals, the point with the pier just south of Rincon. It's a paddle but if rincon is breaking then there's usually great surf peeling there for nice long rights.

I finally got out today.  You would think with all these storms, there would be massive wave energy instead of this ceaseless churn.

It was also windy, which added cottage cheese to the swell.  However, there were two foot "hammer on anvil" ground swells that were strong enough to carry me and give me a nice handful of rides.

I am so out of shape with all these perpetual virii and rainstorms.  I jogged for two miles on the gym machine the other day, and that just made my flu come back weakly for a day or two.  It probably takes two months, if not longer,  for the viral particles to be completely cleared from the body.  I think runny nose and rheumy eyes are almost forever, now.

Found a few fun ones today at Nantasket. Had to hang around in the morning to see and respond to an email on the new house...signing the P&S this weekend...so i couldn't get on it early. Thought I was going to the Cape to hang with Creek but the late start kept me more local. Stiff offshore...10-15 and gusting more but they were holding the faces up nicely. Lots of rides standing on the logo, they weren't huge, waist to chest for the most part but they were pealing. One or two lonely head high waves that i saw early enough to paddle out for....nice long rides on both, one right, one left. The right was a series of turns and a long floater that I actually rode beyond the section then dropped back in and into a hard bottom for a clean exit...great feeling ride.  The left was just a long cruise down the line standing on the front rail with a step back into a huge slashing cutback that I didn't quite hold but put up probably the biggest rooster tail I've ever thrown. Bonus to run into my buddy Tim, had fun swapping waves and stories for a few hours.

Very good description of what JimK has told me as well...start at Cardiff then Paddle North (or South!) to find uncrowded peaks of choice. Advantage - SUPers! I'll be following this trek more often this Spring.
