Title: New way to 'SUP pop up' for the surf...
Post by: Wetstuff on January 16, 2017, 08:49:45 AM
Among other petty annoyances my Pop Up ..or more correctly, 'jump up' is a constant. My Yoga/Tai Chi wife can can fold like a pocket knife in a standing position - 'never in my life.  I simply jump up with both feet but typically land somewhere aft of where my hands were (forward of the handle/center point), so I compensate by putting my hands too far forward ..pushing the nose of the board down ..adding to instability precisely when I need it.  A recent gift from the gods is L4/5 issues which effect the nerves in my left leg evolving into a slap foot - where you loose the ability to raise your toes off the ground, meaning your ankle would prefer to hang slack as you lift your leg. A the end of a session the tops of my first few toes are rashed.  Buggers!

But ..I think I found a solution demonstrated by two different training groups: Erik at PaddleWoo from Nosara, Costa Rica, the other from the Mauka Lodge SUP training folks in Portugal. They both do something that sorta resembles the Aussie Sprinter pop up for proners.

My water is too cold to test this in battle, but it seems to work on a carpet.  One major advantage I find with is that I automatically assume a mostly stager-stance.

I'd sure be interested in hearing other methods if you have them.

The method would work great if I lost 70 pounds and had a 27 inche wide board.  Traditional pop up is fine and quick for me, it' the "stay up" that's the problem.

That is exactly what I do on short boards, only 100 times slower. I generally look like I'm climbing onto a walker, but the end result is the same. I do it a lot from a seated position too--it's actually easier than from kneeling. Getting my front foot sufficiently forward is the biggest challenge--sometimes I pause in the middle of the "pop" (which is more like a gentle whoosh than anything explosive) to shove my foot forward with one hand.

Whatever gets you to your feet in time to do something constructive is just fine. Whenever I get shit from a surfer about being on a standup I always say "Yeah, the part everyone gets excited about is popping to your feet. Hey, nice pop. Your surfing sucks, but man, can you pop up."

That technique seems to take a cue from the "chicken wing" technique for popping up on a prone-longboard.

Nicely explained.

I use a variation of this technique simply because I cannot get both of my feet straight underneath me in a crouch. Just by trial and error is how I came to use the technique in the video, but I'm kneeling on the board over my sweet spot instead of sitting on my board with my lower legs in the water. When kneeling, I spread my feet where I've got one in front of me and the other is behind me. Then I pop up. Not real fast, but not real slow either. But I'm definitely doing it slower than the guy in the video.

I learned essentially the same technique from the Progression Project site a while back (I highly recommend).  It is specifically for small boards and being able to pop up in your catch wave/surf stance immediately.

Here is the link:

Even on larger boards, I find it really helpful at my local spots that are often crowded.  Allows you to sit among the lineup & pop up to catch waves in an instant.  In terms of etiquette, it definitely wins you more points that being the lone SUP dude hanging out the back of the lineup & taking waves before anyone else can.  Which, of course, I'm guilty of doing, but the main thing is to not do that the entire session.

Before we get too carried away cooking-out at our favorite break, consider this.   ;D

FCR, sitting down in a crowded lineup definitely helps for sure.

It does kind of look like a proner variant. When I prone pop up, I grab the rails and swing my feet under into surf position to stand, but that's after the wave catches.

Place blame where it is deserved. Admin introduced us to that a bunch of years ago.

Africa... your folks have all X chromosomes ..Yugi's Kung Fu master got all their Ys.   Thanks for the heads up on Bean's post.  I'll sleep better. Cheers.   Jim

...and come'on Yugi ..that guy did his mount from sand about 18" under the board.  Would have counted as something in 4'.  ...kind of like those two brothers on foils in Maui one evening where one brother 'foils' back out to the lineup..not just in. Woah.

He's not got footing. Look closer, he's fully submerged and pulls himself up with his hands.

Wish I was that supple (and strong)

Not taking anything away from Patrice Guénolé - but keep in mind, that move is much easier on a lower-volume board since as you pull yourself up the board sinks down.  I'm pretty sure I can do that on my 5'10" Davey Sky Reviver (groveler) but don't bet on it... ;D

I do the same moves as Patrice all the time. It's just that he's doing it on purpose.

This is kind of funny, because that's basically the move I've always done since switching over to SUS, and had that dang paddle to deal with...and never paid attention that others might be doing something different.   :)
