Title: 25 1/2" x 13' flat water board
Post by: container on January 14, 2017, 06:43:15 AM
thought i'd share the board my brother and i recently built for flat water/ downwinding. decided on 13' as we have found 14' is too long for the short harbour chop we get here and the extra length over 12' 6 is nice in the flat stuff. full carbon construction with an as yet unfinished steerable fin set up for those cross wind days

That is the longest foil board I've ever seen.

very cool, love the work on the foil, did you mould the mast or do it over a core?

cheers, mast has an 8mm foam core. those bumps look cool but i think they are nothing but drag

Cool yea I'm not to sure about then I tend to go with clean and simple. I like the interchange able foils I'm just working on trying tovmake some moulds for a new mast and fuz to try and get things a bit stiffer.

moulds would be the way, are you hand shaping yours?
heres my latest foil, huge with flexible outboard sections for ultimate pumping power... thats the idea anyway . the current one on the sup is way too small to work on a downwinder. a 13ft board is quite a bit harder to fly than a 6fter so we have found!

I'm going to cut mine on the cnc and just use mdf for the prototype moulds. I'm just trying to learn some cad software to do it all so a little slow. The first foil I made was a complete shot in the dark that made before all the Kai videos came out and was not enough lift at slow speed and not stable. It's sounding like with good technique smaller boards are the way to go I started with a 10'6 which wasn't to bad but seeing Kai paddle in on a 5'6 shows what is posable! I have a bit of a craze you new board shape  to try when I get the foil it's self made.

That foil is great. What is it made of and how does it attach?

supuk throw up some pictures!
the whale tail is just hand shaped polystyrene/carbon. currently the foils have female sockets and a long threaded rod that goes through the front foil and into a nylock nut set into the socket on the rear foil, this worked great but without a vacuum pump my sockets are too resin rich and they have worn out somewhat so this new one will just be glued together.

There was a thread on here but i think it got moved over to the foil page though, there should be a hole bunch of pics

Very cool, that board should rock even without the foil. I'm getting antsy to get back to my shop and rework the Geezer foil. I have a lot of ideas now, and no way to execute. My only current creative outlets are cooking, sewing, writing, and learning drone cinematography. Going a little nuts. Good thing there's going to be some decent surf soon.

I did make one hell of a Valentines dinner for a group of friends. The whole valentine's heart thing cracks me up. How someone getting skewered with arrows and decapitated translates into a box of chocolates escapes me.

The whale tail foil looks very cool, but it will be tricky to tune that design. Too many things going on in a hydro environment. I think you're right about the bumps, though they might detach flow well. But sometimes you just have to go with some confusing cosmetics. Adrian Newy once confessed that some of his more outlandish aerodynamic elements in F1 design were just to confuse the enemy.

I like how the bottom of your board mirrors the foil angle at neutral AOA.
