Title: How Fast is Your Board?
Post by: Beasho on January 22, 2016, 06:38:20 PM
Surfers talk about how fast their L41's or Pintails can go vs. Squash and Zippy Fish designs.

Having recently bought a TRACEUP Surf GPS tracker there is NOW an objective way to report how fast that board or wave really was.

What I have discovered is that a slow wave is ~ 12 mph.  Small beach breaks can get up to 15 or 17 mph.  20 mph on a beach break wave is pretty fast.

When waves get serious, e.g. bigger than 10 feet, the speeds get up to 26 or 27 mph.

Really big waves, with long period open ocean swell can push you beyond 30 mph.

How fast are you going?

Here is a small Beach Break 3 - 4 feet riding my 12 foot Gun just Cruising MAX 14.3 MPH

Here is a slightly faster day further down the beach at a zippy break.

Waves 4 - 7 feet.  10 ft Board.  MAX 21 MPH

Mavericks wave.  12 foot gun (same from 1st video) MAX 30.1 MPH

This was a surprise.  It felt much faster.  I am the invisible collection of 4 pixels making the wake.

PS: This was a special day.  I think everyone was stuck in Puerto Escondido.  I paddled out to check it out.  100% alone.  Wow!

Conditions were clean so I just . . . caught a wave.  Then I got clipped by an outside set.  Still 100% alone.  My leash stretched 50+ feet but fortunately it did not break, and I ended up all in 1 piece.  Then a guy named Benny paddled out from Nicaragua.  I caught 3 more waves and he caught one before I paddled in for a conference call.

My fastest wave to date.  MAX 32.7 mph.

This was NOT at Mavericks but a macking, angry 18 footer that had my full attention and then tried to drown me.  It followed up with 3 subsequent beatings by mutant step brothers.

10 foot board (same as on beach break above).  I knew the ride was fast, the TRACE confirmed it.

Cool Beasho..... good stuff, this should be an interesting thread!

My board did 85 last week..... but was slower when I got to the break.
Not sure if I care how fast I am.... but I am interested to see the figures!

My friend has a Ripcurl GPS watch and he says that the speed really depends on the type of the wave not the board.

You might "feel" faster using certain boards due to the bottom shape/fin set up/ect but the real speed of the board is determined by the wave.

I don't have any fancy GPS stuff, so I'll take his word for it.

That looks very cool where did you find it and is it hard to set up?

what would be very interesting to do is to take say three boards out  1 at a time  on the same day in the same session  surf them see what you get in the same place.  Did the wave speed vary   form one set to another?   is there a bug difference in speed from the fasted biggest  wave in a set to smaller waves> Then try  switching the boards same waves different sets slightly differ times and tides..  what happens?  and as final  test use one board.  change the fin set up  see what happens.  I gotta get me one these!!!

How would the Trace work on a downwind? Would it recognize glides and give speeds?
Title: Re: How Fast is Your Board?
Post by: Beasho on January 25, 2016, 09:39:36 PM
The device can be found here: http://www.traceup.com/

Although I needed one quickly for the SUP paddle speed project so I found one at the local surf shop.

How would the Trace work on a downwind? Would it recognize glides and give speeds?

The first post shows the results from a mellow 3 - 4 foot beach break.  The SLOWEST MAX speed recorded that day, Dec 27th, was 7.9 mph.  What this means is that the app gets triggered to show a wave when speed exceeds 8 mph.   Since your glides are faster than this it SHOULD trigger a wave count.  You could then see how far you were riding the swell waves, which would be very cool.  I am not sure if it bugs out when you depart and return to different locations.

My longest ride to date has been 458 yards

The synced GoPro editing feature is SWEET! Stats overlay too! Looks like it would work w/beach pov from a SOLOSHOT too. But I don't know why the dude in the unedited video is not shuttering his cam on/off in between rides, especially on a shortboard. I trigger on/off on longboard AND sup and it ain't no easy feat (which I'm pretty sure you're aware of).
Your demo vid made me lol! You were ampin'! I'd like to see a full edit w/some of your big wave surfing!
I def don't need another tech gadget but this thing has my attention! $199 seems worth it...I think?

I think most people just let it run and edit afterwards. I sure don't want to miss a wave screwing with my camera. The theoretical benefit of Trace is that you don't have to edit afterwards, it does it for you. It's very close to working properly, I think all it needs is some software dev.

It def takes a certain skill set to trigger proper. On sup it's more of a set it and forget it but I always shutter off after a ride. Then shutter back on once returned to lineup. On longboard it's a bit easier and it helps to trigger in the rhythm/cadence of your paddling. On my 6'6" fish prone board it's REALLY easy to do.

I got 24.1 MPH with my ripcurl gps watch in 2 foot overhead in HB beach break, though that was fast but not compared with the Mavericks speed bandit BEASHoooooooo!!!

Ok guys I ordered my Trace and it should be here by Friday.  I plan to read up on your tips especially since I'm on a Mac and will be going for speed & distance on my JL M14 at some of the outer reefs. Look forward to share & compare.

Not quite what you're proposing, but here's a video the Trace guys made last year showing data collected at Lowers over 6 months from a dozen different surfers using the trace sensor.   At 00:52 there's a heatmap visualization showing where they hit fastest speeds.

This is a cool addition.  Once again a very crisp way to display the speed data over a local spot.  What this also confirms is that short boards, on smaller waves run about 18 - 22 mph.  Given a SUP's ability to catch big waves, and early we definitely have the edge on speed.

Beasho or Pono - can you guys tell me the best place to mount the Trace on my JL M14 downwinder?  I was thinking on the centerline in front of one of the recessed deck screw mounts so I could set up a leash system. I'm going for speed & distance and don't care about turns.

Post by: PonoBill on January 30, 2016, 12:26:10 AM
I doubt you'll need a leash. Click the trace into the mount and see what you think. Moving it back might give you more turns. I purposely did a whole bunch of cutbacks for no good reason today, and still only got one turn in 21 waves.

New Speed record set: MAXED out at 31 MPH on a party wave.

New features discovered.

It had been more than 3 years since I got in a car to go surfing, then my friend Jim called and suggested that Santa Cruz would be the call given big, Mavericks'able size 12 ft @ 15 seconds, but pesky NW winds in the morning.

I took off on a Beast at Middles.  I called out to Jim that I was going left, he too was going left.  We used to windsurf together on the waves so I / we figured 'whatever' and partied it up.  I ended up a little deeper on a 15+ foot face.  I was looking up at his board.  You'll see me emerge from below, and behind him on the first wave.

It was like the SUP'ing dynamic duo at Steamers to the horror of everyone on the cliff.

What I found is that the TRACE allows you to home in on the Surf-Cam Rewind feature like it was a Solo shot.  Just pull up TRACE on your phone.  Tap through the waves caught, scroll down and see the time e.g. 10:33 am, and go to the exact same time on Surfline REWIND.  BINGO! - There you are!!!!

Surfline's camera focuses on the cliff but does not show the take-off at Middles wide to the left.  These are the end of my rides.

Love it Beasho.  Keep it coming.

Pono - tell me this: it Trace a viable device to measure downwind runs?  Can it show bumps? We're having a significant wind event and tomorrow might be pretty good.

I tried it today--stuffed it in my camelbak. I don't have time to fiddle with it tonight, but I think I can use the data to give me what I want.

Hey Beasho, so funny that was you out there. I went across town to check out the Lane on Saturday morning and got there right after you got a good wave at Middle Peak. I was at the railing and got to hear some grumbling from some long time locals.

I wish I spoke up. There wasn't hardly anybody else hanging outside waiting for the macking set waves. What was there to grumble about? These guys weren't even in the water and you were out there snagging some big ones.  Good on you!

Looks like TRACE has been integrated into the new Mission smartwatch by Nixon for surfing and skiing.
Quote
Unique to the Mission are two apps: Mission and Trace. Mission is an app, powered by Surfline and Snocountry, and designed specifically for surfers, snowboarders and skiers. It shows real-time snow and surf conditions. Trace is a powerful action sports activity tracker.

Interesting but kinda pricey at $400.

Hero 5 Session coming to life.

My go-to camera was an 'older' Hero 3 Black.  It shoots perfectly well, in 2.7K.

However I have found that the Session is:

1st attempt with TRACE.  Sync before you go out.  Then shoot in 4K.

It only took 1 1/4 yrs to get this to work but I can see this being a great feedback tool for speed down the line.  This was in some chop 6 ft @ 12 seconds.

As I get feedback from other people with 'Trackers' I am constantly surprised by how slow the prone guys go.  I am not sure why.  Hopefully this video feedback will answer some questions.

That's really cool, I've had my Trace for a year, and I've never been able to get the synced video with GoPro, mainly because I don't have a mac and when I try and use Dropbox, the files are too large.

Any suggestions on trying to get it to work (which I love the  Trace by the way). I seem to average 18 MPH on my now-sold Hokua X32, and roughly 13-15 MPH on my noserider on slow EC waves. Costa Rica I definitely get a bump up to around 20.

More Trace GoPro fodder.  Here was another Test Sample.

GoPro Session 5.  Yes - The files are enormous UNLESS you submit a single wave at a time.  I do NOT record constantly.  Tried that DIDN'T work, and you will overwhelm the DropBox.

Here is a segment in 4K @ 30 fps.  This segment alone was ~ 200 MB (DropBox will hold up to 2 GB)

So you submit the Video files, after you have uploaded your TRACE statistics, ONE WAVE AT A TIME.  You can submit the entire timeline, but if you shoot at 1080P or 4K your files will be too big.  What is cool is that TRACE is processing the 4K video and producing 4K results.

This is a sample of Mavericks FLAT.  The buoys were 3 ft.  This spot was 6 - 7 feet.  When it's small and feckless its fun to shoot the rocks at a spot we call "EY's" for Extreme Yakers - The place no Kayaker would ever go.

The takeoff is the most critical because if you fall you wash directly onto the rocks (1st Photo).

Once you get going down the line its best to tuck your knee as close to the rock as possible.  It's dicey but if you fall (second shot), ideally, you flush between the two sets of rocks into the shallow bay.  Yakers were cheering me on in the distance.

With the 4K resolution you can actually see the Blue indicator light on the Trace.

This is really cool. Low technology from my Garmin App and watch informs me that I have gone 15 mph on an 8' JP Slate in head high slow mushy conditions. Slloooww! But one wave was a 100 yards long. Welcome to Hull!

Yesterday I clocked Tom Brady going 28.5 mph at Mavericks.

As I said 30 mph is FAST.  Tough to achieve >> 30 mph on a surfboard.  If Tom Brady can't do it at Mavericks then who can?

At Mavericks I have clocked speeds ranging from this 28.5 (slow) up to 31 mph.

HOWEVER: Yesterday I convince Haley, the Obi Wan Kenobi of SUP surfing Mavericks, to buy a TRACE.  This should get interesting.  He catches roughly 10:1 my wave count at Mavericks.
