I wanted to write up a trip report for when I was in Nicaragua last week. I went down for just a week to pretty much explore and get some surf in! I have land down there and keep a board, so I was riding a Starboard 7’11” the whole time.
I was more central/north coast (where my spot is located) which is mainly all beach breaks but I like it up there because you never deal with the crowds you do down south.

My first full day there I actually met up with H20Man (Roland) as he has a spot down there too! He was up north and came by where I was staying. My first international zoner meetup haha. He didn’t have his SUP with him but took his firewire out to get some. It was my first day there and I was kook’in out a bit trying to get used to surfing an ocean again. Me, being used to lake waves, they are so completely different. It takes me usually at least two days to get my sh!t together and used to the power and shape. Punchy beach breaks are not the easiest to surf on a SUP anyways and that usually means taking quite a few beatings as well haha.
Roland it was good to meet you man and hopefully next time we can get out and sweep that ocean for some sessions!
The beach where im at works best on high tide and tends to go onshore later on in the day, but the mornings are always offshore and glassy. We had a decent sized swell the first weekend I was there and another that came through overnight Wendesday. Magicseaweed was saying 3-5ft and anywhere from 14-18 sec periods. Im used to about 6 seconds in the lake, how nice this was!
Here is Thursday AM

There is an outer reef that works on low tide. It has not yet been surfed by anyone. On a big swell this thing will pump. These waves here were about head high - +2ft and it’s about a half mile out.

I was trying to work on my closeout floats/lip bashes/airs ….not quite getting the airs….yet.

Here’s a few more shots from the AM sessions last week…..

taking some big outside ones on the head and getting washed in and doing anything you can to get out back again….

we then went south last weekend to Hermosa and it was honestly like 50k ofshores. SO windy. But I paddled out anyways cause it was my last day in the country. This beach is super gorgeous though. It’s one of the beaches where they were filming Survivor Nicaragua a couple years ago.

barely making it over a few

Dude! You look like a pro out there. The pictures are awesome! :o
-
Wow, great photos! Those are some beautiful waves indeed. Nice turns too dude!
-
freakin awesome-saw that one pic on InstaG!-Nice!
i just sat and stared at some of those-windy and blown but fun size here in Socal-wiating for a window to clean up and for right tide.
Great Pics-cool you got to meet up with Rolo-hes a good human.

Hey Brother! It was great hanging with you guys, even with me locking the keys in my truck, ha ha. Nothing a little patience and a stiff wire couldn't fix. Too bad the La Policía Nacional Nicaragüense decided to take my license on the way to the airport. No bribes for you señor & and you can keep the license. 15min and $20 at the California DMV and I'm legal and back on the road. :)
I left my Fusion and surfboard for the next trip, so we need to try and coordinate again.

Looks like an awesome time! You sure made a good call picking up some property there. Great photos
-
Nice trip guys and thanks for the photos. Winter temps and too many
onshore days made them nice visual escape.

So jealous!

I hope Endless doesn't mind me piggybacking on his Nica thread, but here's some more general photos from our trip. I've been going for the last 3 years. Its a great country and worth a visit, sooner than later.

:o is all I can say.
I got back from Costa about 3 weeks ago. Was there over Halloween for a week.
We didn't have anything like that when I was down in Matapalo. Hardly any swell - extremely unlucky really.
Congrats man. Epic pics.
BTW, FIRST POST FROM A LONG TIME LURKER. About to post my Costa pics but yours are a tough act to follow. :-\

Nice endless, real nice... gonna have to check u guys out.
Must feel good with out the rubber.
Wave with the rock pic.. muy bueno
-
Very nice pics. Heading down to the Dominican in a couple of weeks. This cold weather is bumming me out.
-
Great pics and good surfing, too. Thanks! :) Paddle on; JD

thanks for the comments! it was a sick trip and I'll be back for a couple weeks at least it's looking like in feb ;D it was for sure nice to be out there not covered in rubber head to toe. it's gonna be real hard for me to get that first winter session here after wearing just boardies every day.
H20; great pics man. surf at Santana had more size then us for sure; but usually does. That last pic :o
the 'cops' there are definitely a downside. slimey bastards. still can't believe you managed to unlock the door with that horribly stiff wire. I thought that window was gonna be kicked out for sure! Worst case you coulda just stayed there cause the next morning was glassy and head high!

Endless,
Those pictures were fantastic! Really enjoyed them. You were rippin and looked very comfortable out there. Now Nica is another place I need to go. Been thinking of spending a few months in CR over summer with the fam. I need to get in touch with PilonSUP about that.
Keep thi pictures comin!

Wow - looks great.
Nice board . . . . ;D
-
Great shots......looks like you're tearing it up out there.
I spent some time at Playa Maderas down there (the one with the fin shaped rock just outside of San Juan del Sur) and it was epic. I reinforce your sentiments that Nicaragua is one of those countries that should be visited sooner rather than later.
Reminds me of Costa 10yrs ago.
Ride on!

Not to thread jack but.....Did u ever get that 7'11" out on our lakes? How did it handle?

I'm interested in hearing about that too.

I only tried it on the lakes once about a year ago and it was on a super choppy crappy day and it was no good. i was falling off a lot. i however now use a 8'4 focus torpedo, and after the last year and getting used to these smaller boards i feel like the 7'11 would be better for the lakes then the focus is. just because the 7'11 has a rounder nose. the 8'4 is a bit thinner, and has a much narrower profile with a super thin tail and narrow nose. i feel like the starboard would be easier to ride with our conditions. i might do the switcheroo next time im down in nica. but then again i may just buy yet another board for up here haha
-
thanks again for all the comments by the way everyone! keeping me stoked. winter months are settling in so i probably will not be on the water until the end of feb...or whenever i head down south again.
let the mega surf withdrawls commence. nothing a little snowboarding, watching all the live ASP comps, and rum won't cure ;)

Endless
I can't believe I missed this post... great shots... nice ripping. ;D

How do you post the picture's with the story in between? That's a much more effective way to do it.... I just click additional options, and add pics, but the all pile up at the end of the post.
I like your way much better!
Secret please...... :-*
H20
thanks for the pictures as well... looks like a real laid back place.(cept for the gestapo)

cheers supthecreek!
what i do is upload all your images to a hosting site like imageshack or photobucket, then just paste the links to the JPG's in your message body and put the image tags around it. you do that by hitting the little button above that Inserts an Image. so it would look something like this.
start of my story...blah blah
[ img ] [url=http://www.photobucket.com/suppicture1.jpg]www.photobucket.com/suppicture1.jpg[/url] [ /img ]
rest of my story blahhhhhhh
[ img ] [url=http://www.photobucket.com/suppicture2.jpg]www.photobucket.com/suppicture2.jpg[/url] [ /img ]
(in the above example, i put an extra space between "[" and "img" so i could display the function

Awesome pics everyone (thanks endless)...gets me stoked to get down to Costa Rica in a couple months.... ;D

Love to see people planting the flag in new spots. And whoever took the photos did a great job. (Random question, how long was that lens? I'm shopping for the wife so she can shoot me and the friends.)
Are there guides that you can hook up with down there or is it just be-friend a local to know where to go?
-
Thanks Endless! I'll see if I can get my posting into the modern era.
cowboy...
"for the wife so she can shoot me and the friends" ???
just make sure it doesn't look like this....
;D

haha yeah if it's not gonna be target practice, it's a 70-300 lens. just a cheaper olympus one nothing special.
as far as guides, nothing sup oriented....yet. if you want a decent board you gotta bring one. there are lots of surf camps and the main spots are all over the internet. there are a few camps and whatnot to stay that are great if you want to make sure you get waves to yourself; mainly more up north. less crowded up there... and i'm a bit of a selfish guy and hate crowds ;D
