Just beat the storm to the dock

Cape Cod has unlimited flat-water variety.
Anywhere that the wind and tide pick.... is my favorite ;D
For scale.... the map shows about 14 mile - North to South
-
We're definitely going to have to check out Cape Cod next season. I haven't been there since I was 6 months old.
-
This is a picture from the next "Season" ;D
Great Paddling last winter... the ice never closed up any waterways.
Come on down!
Where are you from? I was trying to place that bridge ???
-
Not quite ready for the"next season" yet. Still remembering warm summer days on The Burnt River in Ontario Canada.
-
The bridge is across the Mohawk River near Schenectady, NY. Love the snow pictures. Our rivers will close up mid-January.
-
This kind of speaks for itself, at least if you are a USer it should

Wow Celeste, that's awesome!
Here's one from today-

Deep Cove, North Vancouver, and up Indian Arm in BC. Best day of the year and finally bought a real board so this was the first paddle.
That's my daughter on the old O'Brien plastic POS "the barge" and her boyfriend on a Surftech rental. The shot is looking North up Indian Arm. Jug Island is on the far right, then Raccoon Island centre-right and Twin Islands in the distance but looking like a part of Raccoon. DC to Twin, then Raccoon and Jug back to DC is ~9500m. About 2 hours on the barge. Should be far less on the new Kahuna 12-6 as paddling it seems effortless.
The second shot is looking out from the Canoe and Kayak Centre in Deep Cove.
-
blackeye
That's a beautiful spot!
You must have good Karma to get those conditions for a first paddle.
-
We were lucky - an overlap of the last bit of sunny weather and no ski boats or cruisers. It was perfect and fun with the youngsters. Two more converts!
Too bad the weather is so snotty now.

Gringo, is that a Wavestorm SUP?
Beautiful scenery.

NoSalt- yep it sure is. Total beater board, takes an amazing abuse and it still works.
Thanks, the scenery is pretty nice.

Love to paddle around Palos Verdes from Torrance Beach. Kelp forests, dolphins, pelicans, etc. all right here in LA. Here are a couple shots from this weekend. Thanks LifeProof iPhone!

This is in an island group that belongs to Indonesia but is in the South China Sea. It's glassy all day but extremely hot and humid. Good place to SUP with a speargun. Tons of fish.

what board is that? looks like some good volume in that.
-
Already posted in another thread, but seems like it should be here, too! ;D September, 2012 on Lake Wenatchee, Washington. Seems like so long ago right now with it getting cold and rainy now.

Starboard Astro Touring 12'6" inflatable.
-
I just got into SUPing and I'm already considering my second board and the Starboard Astro 12'6" was on the top of my list, but it doesn't look like they offer it any more. Is that true? Any other relatively fast inflatables out there for flat water?
I have an M&M 12'6" and am interested in an inflatable that doesn't feel like too much of a slug in comparison to the M&M. I think an inflatable would be a good complement to the M&M to use when travelling or when there is potential to hit rocks.
-
I have just recently been getting into more flatwater paddling. I mostly paddle on rivers but exploring the flatwater options around our area is opening up a whole new world. I stopped this week at the largest body of water in the State of Colorado, Blue Mesa Reservoir. I paddled up the Lake Fork arm which got narrower and walled in as I went up. Really fun. Stoke to explore that lake more this coming summer.

The Starboard Astro is a 2013 model - and is only in select dealers so far.
I have some in stock right now.

I love still water.

Felt like spring today in RI. Took a ride up north to Providence and went for a nice paddle through the city. Always nice to see a familiar place from a different perspective.
-
La Jolla Cove is awesome. Go in the am before the wind picks up.

Mono Lake has to be one of my favorites and there's so many great spots in the Sierras. I don't get up there enough.

Love em all so far. Keep em coming! Here is my contribution. It's a local lake with 2 islands. One is privately owned and has a house originally designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The latest owner purchased it in the early 90's along with the plans and had it built.

suprbowl--thanks for the photo and article--very interesting. I love paddling and looking at buildings--also seeing the ones other people see.
I see you must be getting used to the new board to be able to be taking photos from it.
-
I'm getting braver. I took a few standing, but most were still from my knees. Loving the board!

Here is a picture from early summer. Yesterday, within about 1 mile, I spotted two majestic birds. An osprey was circling above the river at one hole while a bald eagle waited for just the right fish from an overhanging tree limb. There have been some amazing views of all kinds of birds. Earlier in the season, I witnessed two osprey chasing a young bald eagle down the river. On another day, I see two bald eagles circling high above. The osprey always fly off when I get near while the eagles seem to have no fear of others. Yesterday's eagle kept an eye on me as I paddled up, by and then surfed a wave just down stream.

Thanks. Some beautiful shots of your paddling spots too. Yeah, the trees are on the edge of a river delta that gets high water every year, which is coming soon here. A large part of the poplar stand in that area can be paddled in spring/early summer. The water had actually come down quite a bit and you can see the high water mark on the trees in the second pic. The third pic is from a different lake.

^ Yes--looks like a whole different world out there, where water can be flat but not level.
Well, not really flat, but technically, there hasn't been actual flat water since the time of Galileo.

No wake boats up yet, cruisers aren't yet returning home, and the thermal hadn't yet filled in.

however.... I would really like to see pictures of that place through a normal lens..... it looks amazing!
Just the kind of place I would like to explore.... thanks!

But I want to get all of it in! Until we get Google "Waterview" mapping, the fisheye is the best way.
I'll chance taking out our SLR someday, but iPhone shots only for now.

Here are a few more - one that proves the earth is not flat. The earth is a sphere and we are on the inside.
The next two are a secret put-in that I found that avoid the parking hassles in Deep Cove.
And just to remind the locals that the current hot weather is fleeting, a shot from February this year.

Awesome... now your talking... I love paddling in the snow... great picture!

Creek,
You and your daughter will make it there some day, I'm sure. How about next August?
It amazes me that a lake that size and all those people with boats, that it is so quite and peaceful in the early morning. It doesn't come alive with boaters until 8:30 to 9:00 in the morning.

I finally got some good photos of my favorite local paddling spot. These are taken from the Cedar Point boat launch on the north end of Little Bay in Durham, NH. From here you can head south towards Great Bay, west up the Oyster River, north up the Bellamy River, or east down the Piscataqua towards Portsmouth Harbor. It's a perfect launching point for any wind or tide.
In the hour or so that I paddled around here before taking these pictures tonight, I didn't see any other paddlers or boaters after passing a couple kayaks as I was heading out.

Flat. Like this?
-
This is Tai Tam Bay looking West towards Stanley, in Hong Kong. We don't have any inland Sup places here as almost all the freshwater is preserved in reservoirs for drinking water, and no watercraft allowed on them. At its head of Tai Tam Bay on the right is a really sheltered flat water place to paddle, which opens out in the middle to the bay. To the left, the bay opens up to the East Lamma Channel, and one of our best downwind runs... across a shipping channel... but that's another thread in the Zone

Yugi - cool shot - looks like the guy in front is doing all the work and the wing man is along for the ride! Back in the day racing small sailboats, we'd try to perch on the hip of a big boat and surf their wash. They'd try to shake us which made for some awesome sailing.

We have nothing like this in Hawaii. Even when it's glassy it's lumpy bumpy. And if it's glassy and you go out for a stroll, the wind can roar into the picture in a blink and put you in dire straits. This is the caffeinated version of SUP. Seeing these pics is revealing a whole other side of SUP that's serene. I'd enjoy going out somewhere like that and if I did I'd make PBill turn off his AC/DC he always plays at top volume. When it's roaring wind I can't hear him.

Flat water paddling is something I really miss from New England. Haven't found anything even close to what New England (specifically RI and the Cape) offers here in SoCal. Two of my favorites from back home...
1st pic: North Kingstown, RI. Looking out at Fox Island (small island) and Jamestown in the background. Rome Point and Jamestown bridge to the right, out of the picture. Behind, Bissel Cove, an amazing tidal cove that has two entries/exits, has abundant oysters and clams and even allows you to paddle right up to the old Hamilton Mill which is now condos. I popped the question to my better half in this exact spot, in the water on our boards, last summer. I never even thought about dropping the ring until she brought it up. I actually opened the box upside down but luckily it made it to her finger.
2nd pic: Snug Harbor, RI. Port of Galilee behind. This is another amazing place. There are salt marshes behind the land that are very narrow and can only be paddled in during a mid to high tide. Timing it right can allow you to literally ride the outgoing tide through the maze of the marshes. Tons of blue crabs, many birds and some of the best sunsets. That lighthouse in the center of the picture is a stone lighthouse that was hand built by the guy who owns the house it's attached to. Fun fact: he was the brains behind NFL coaches using headsets to communicate with QBs and upstairs. Took him 5 years to build the lighthouse (it's 100% working). Once it was finished, the Coast Guard told him sorry but you can't light it up, it's not an official/regulated lighthouse. Fun fact #2: he does light it up from time to time and once he turned it on as I was leading a group of folks back from a full moon SUP tour. Told them it was planned even though it wasn't.

Willamette narrows and willamette falls near Oregon City. You will often see sea lions stealing salmon and sturgeon from the fishermen by the falls. Best part is going with the current on the way home.

Is that an Ace-Tec Wing? How do you like it?
-
Yes it is. This is my first board, but so far I really like it. It does seem a little heavy sometimes. It is very stable, I kinda wish I had gotten a slightly smaller board to challenge my balance a little more.

I didn't know about these two places. Thanks for posting the photos for these two parks. Since I've got my Hammer on order, when I get it, I'll have some more places to take her to and paddle.

I just posted a link in the Houston thread in the Gulf Coast forum to the Clear Creek Paddle Trail. It is a little over 6 miles long total.
Awesome that you are getting a Hammer!

My next door neighbor went down to Galveston today with his family and they are staying over night at the hotel at Moody Gardens. On their way back home Sunday, they are going to go by and check out Clear Lake Park and give me the run down on the place.

Two different reservoirs in SE Idaho. Looking at Wyoming in the first and then SE Idaho looking at....SE Idaho, along with his and her watercraft.
-
@lucabrasi
Nice looking sups in those pictures. Just curious. Who makes them and what models are they?
-
Hi Night Wing. Top photo is of a SIC Recon 11 11. It really was not on my radar but while looking at others, I found it. B grade, 3-4 lbs overweight. Less than $650. Brand new. Are you kidding me? No brainer. Hell, it ain't that heavy.
I had heard of it and how fun it was and it had caught my eye but with what I do, where I paddle, and other boards I alrerady have it never really turned my head so to say but at that price I had to. I like it a lot and am looking forward to when the power boats are out in force to play on some.
Green board is a JL Mission. That one I have wanted for years. Finally a deal came along I could not refuse. I have only had it out a couple times and will write up something on it after another time or few. I am in love with it and it seems to be everything I wanted and hoped for even as far inland as I am. It is making me look again at the M14 tho a custom Hammer is calling my name a bit louder every time I turn around.
The other thing is a Hobie I 11s. It is my wifes. I still have not rode it but most definitely will. May turned very ugly and the switch for summer just got flipped a week or so ago so with that and other things am a little behind on being out. I see the Hobie stand up pedal thing as something for fun for the afternoon and this one as something to bring home to meet the family. It is going to be lots of fun and she will use it all the time. Perhaps it will be the stepping stone to paddling a board I am hoping.
Here's a couple more.
-
@lucabrasi
Thanks for posting more photos and telling me what models they are. Ditto for sharing your thoughts as well. Since I'm new to supping, I soak up every bit of knowledge and info as I can.

The view from 9,500 in Wyoming. The wind was brutal all day and we just did a lot of driving and exploring until about 6. We set up camp in the trees and lake was still showing whitecaps. Right after this was taken we went out for leisurely 45 minute paddle as the winds died down completely to watch a great sunset (forest fire 30 miles south and west) and watch the trout rise all around us until dark.

I just came back from a camping trip from Lake Durant in the Adirondacks. I didn't SUP here, but I paddled a canoe with my wife and two daughters. My son was alongside in my kayak. We saw loons, hummingbirds, ravens, and hawks on the trip. One night, we were woken up by barred owls screeching and hooting above our tent!
-
@Ichabod Spoonbill
When I take my Hobie on an overnight camping/fishing trip, some of the animals I might see are: turtles, snakes (rat, cottonmouth, copperhead), a wayward seagull, cormorants, whitetail deer, (bobcat at night), owls (screech, barn, great horned), hawks (kestrel, red shoulder, red tailed), robins, squirrels (fox, gray), alligators, armadillos and possums. Just depends on what I come across.
BTW, thanks for posting the scenic photo.

My favorite so far is the Weeki Wachee River. The warm crystal clear water, the surrounding vegetation, the manatees...great stuff.

A great set of photos. That dolphin picture is my favorite from the ones you shared.
Thanks for taking the time to post all of them.

Got in a quick paddle after work last night, our local reservoir water level is low which is typical this time of year. The boat ramp on side is closed, which gave us 6 miles of serenity to paddle and talk without dodging wakeboat waves, and enjoy the quiet. We went back in our favorite cove and watched the deer until dark, which comes too soon this time of year. But it is worth the trade off. Fall is my favorite time of year to paddle.
A 3-year old Hala Nass craigslist find was finally put on the water. After a summer spent on an 11' Isle explorer the Nass felt like it could glide forever. Not too fond of the older style fins but the price was hard to pass up for someone who has been wanting a Nass for a year now.

Is that near Wasilla?
I was just checking out the surrounding area from the satellite and it looks fantastic.
I'd love to explore some of those fjords and glaciers as well as all the lakes and rivers.

I've never paddled in flat water before until this last August on this appendix of Lake Tahoe called Emerald Bay. The whole lake is a wonder of the world. Also first time paddling with a PFD lashed on the front of the board. The only thing is, you need to go out early because if the weather is great and it's July or August, there are a ton of speed boats tooling around in no recognizable pattern. Sometimes they come from far away just to check up out and give you a good dose of chop. This is looking out towards the entrance of the Lake. And the sunrise. Both shots are from my grandson with his G-pro

^ Tahoe is definitely on the bucket list. Really nice shots. Motor boats are a PIA sometimes.

Thanks all. Yes the scenery was staggering but the trip turned into a nightmare with my encounter with ground wasps. Set me back big time. I'd recommend going before or after the weather (and I guess water) gets warm and the wasps are in dormancy.

Robon, Great shots. I found Trout Lake on Google Maps, but not Summit Creek - Where is that?
Thanks. I'm thinking of doing a short write up of the Trout Lake Trip. Really cool area. Was thinking of waiting till I paddle the lake end to end (only 25kms), but it still exceeded my expectations as a first timer there. What do you think? Too much too soon? lol. The Kootenay Lake trip was a bit overkill with photos and several weren't good quality.
Anyways, Summit creek is a tributary to the Kootenay River, and is part of the Creston Valley Wildlife reserve. This area is my favourite in the Koots when I want to paddle flat water and view wildlife. I have never been skunked for wildlife here. At the very least you will see Osprey, Blue Herons, Bald eagles, along with many other bird species, and I have come across black bears, moose, elk, deer, fox, coyotes etc on various outings. Grizzlies, wolves and cougars are in the area occasionally, but have never seen them from the water. I saw my first bobcat in BC at the the wildlife reserve two years ago from a canoe, and last year I was about 200 feet from a moose crossing the river and coming out on the opposite bank. Tried to get a pic but wasn't fast enough on the draw.
This pic is a sand bar on summit creek and its as far as you can go upstream before the water gets too shallow. I didn't have my gps going for this, but you can paddle upstream for about 1.5 kilometres from Kootenay river and it's very easy against the current, with some nice pools for swimming along the way.

Beauty. I need to do some travelling. Are the rapids tidal or do you have to go down a river from the coast?
-
The rapids are tidal, accessible via 2 directions depending on flow. We have two ebbs and 2 floods per 24hrs. Rapids can get up to 9kts. I teach sup tidal rapids classes in there. Aerial view here of the rapids at a full flood, https://fortress.wa.gov/ecy/coastalatlas/tools/ShorePhotos.aspx

Very cool. Thanks. Found a couple of videos and one is of you doing your thing. I could have used your expertise during my last trip to Victoria BC. The kayaking vid shows how big it can get at deception pass with tides and some wind. 9 knots is a strong current for SUP during a tidal exchange. I paddled to Chatham and Discovery Island a few times when I was staying in Victoria and it was trial by fire. Different conditions for each time I went out according to tide and wind. Max current in Baynes channel where I was paddling is 6 knots, so 9 knots at Discovery Pass in a narrow with wind is major. I did alright off the coast of Victoria but quickly realized that being caught in a tidal race is no joke, and was thankful It was only a few kilometres to shore.

Horsetooth Ache race on Saturday, a half marathon which is primarily for crew and scull, but tow of us SUPs get to play.
I made it to the tun around point at 6.5 miles and decided to give the poor support boat with me the rest of the day off and have a beer. The other SUP was over a mile in front of me and working hard into the rising headwind. He was also half my age on a carbon fiber racing board, so it was cool to watch him going for it. I just particpated, no racing.

Since I use linux Mint 18 as my default computer operating system, I'll see if there is linux version of Microsoft Picture Manager or a linux equivalent program or utility. If both options are unavailable for linux, I might have to go into my Boot Menu (my two desktop tower computers have two hard drives in each of them) to access my Windows 7 hard drive and download the Microsoft Picture Manager.

Hi, Leecea. Marsh Creek is really nice, especially since it is 20 minutes from home. It does get crowded in the summer, but early mornings are more quiet. I've heard late afternoon is better also (on weekends). It's also not too busy after work during the week in summer. There are a lot of really nice people there. You can launch from the East or West side. Parking can be tricky when it is busy. It's been quiet since turning colder. I do plan on paddling in the winter once in a while.
The only other lake I SUPed in is Nockamixon, it was great and so much bigger and very pretty.
If you want more info on Marsh Creek I can provide my email address to you.

Just depends on where you live. We're having a warming trend in southeast Texas where I live. Our high temperature for today (Friday) is forecasted for 71 degrees F. Saturday's high temperature is forecasted for 80 degrees F. But a cold front is arriving on Saturday afternoon and it is going to drop the temperature to 33 degrees F by Sunday morning.

I designed a home on Canyon Lake about 15 yrs ago. If I remember correctly, the lower level couldn't have a bathroom or plumbing because the lake level can rise high enough to flood it out. The electrical outlets had to be at switch level as well. I think we did a big game room below? Big wake boarding lake. How's it for paddling with the speed boats? Winery tours :)

Cool river-running :D I used to swim in the Cascade mountain streams when I was a teenager and look at the trout - no way I could do that now.
SPEAKING of coooold water - there is some open water here at the Eklutna Power Plant - it gets its water from the bottom of a glacier lake (Eklutna Lake :D - Eee-KLOOT-na) via a 6 foot hole drilled thru the mountain behind it. The water is ..... not frozen.
I talked my wife into letting me bring one of my iSups and dry suit (and pfd - and leash :D) to get on the water ONE more time this year.
I'm so out of shape - and balance! Should have brought my Blue Planet - 32" is a LOT more stable than 26" :D
Got a screen shot off some video my wife was taking - hope to have some nice SLR shots from my daughter later (including my nearly falling in but barely saving myself) - but for now :D
EDIT: it was 13f..

splashhh!
I actually managed to save this :D Got water in my ear, but not in my hair! At these temps, a dry head is a warm head - helps a lot on the walk back to the car. I call it success :D
-
^ Beautiful... and hats off to you for getting out there...
-
You people who go supping when it's cold and snow on the ground are really tough especially when the air temperature is 13 degrees F. BTW, the winter scenery is something to behold. So still and quiet too.
-
;) I learned that I should use my wider board to practice. That "Slip and Dip" was chilly.
My daughter is a photographer. I can be at the same place with the same camera and she blows me away with her eye for the right shot.

Your daughter takes good pictures. She has that "knack" for taking good photos. She should make a good living as a photographer, whether employed for a company or as a freelancer. I don't have that knack and this is why I always appreciate a good photo.

brrr :D I like the ice forming on the board ! Saltwater? Looks tidal on the shore in some spots. I need warmer gloves - my 2mm neoprene gloves were not so warm. Supthecreek says bring the neoprene for if you get wet - mine were too hard to put on with cold hands. I'm going to look for big, thick mitts for "oops I'm cold now better go for the Gumby hands and go home!" :D.
-
It is at the Danube river. -2 degrees celcius, but less wind and dry air. So no gloves needed.
-
Went out for a couple hours on the Columbia River today. -5dgC in the sun. First pic is of the Lions Head pub (lower right) named after the rock formation behind, which kind of looks like a lion from the right angle. Definitely my favourite watering hole in the Koots.
-
From the "less is more" and "paddle what you brung" file...here's a flat water sesh on shorter 9' surf SUPs in the warm tropical water of the South Pacific...
Woulda been cool to have had my drone on that trip...had to make do with the polecam...;-)

Just curios. Where in the South Pacific were you?
-
Sister in Law sent me this beautiful image from Vero Beach last night.
Any of you the rider?
I wish it was me, but I have a chilly winter paddle on slate for this weekend.
-
Nice photo. Looks like getting towards sunset.

Currently, no paddling is possible.

Not always "flat" water but often enough....

This was last week-end, this is this week-end.....still beautiful...
-
Luc - awesome. I just haven't braved it this winter. I was telling a colleague from the East that we get snow two weeks a year. As you well know its been 2 months and its still snowing. At least its not stopping you. And North Shore snow-shoeing has been fantastic this season. We did a night-shoe up Seymour that I'm going to do again asap.

Yes that is a change from the very mild past two winters.
I used to snowshoe quite a bit at Seymour but now it has become such a jungle with everybody coming there. Even when arriving early you get the groups of 20 people hugging the trail disguised like to do glaciers. Same for the driving. Surprised there are not more cars in the ditch. Remind me when the Grind became fashionable in Richmond and people started to show up in city shoes....
-
Beauty pics from the coast. You guys are getting a ton of snow this year. We went close to a week without snow in the Koots, but it's been snowing a fair bit over the past few days.
Some pics from late afternoon on Arrow Lake. Nice that days are getting longer. I was tooling around in the log booms that are arranged for about a kilometre on one side of the lake. Not where you want to be paddling a carbon race board in the maze, but the logs break up the chop and make paddling upwind easier on this section.

That is not something I would do. You never what might move the logs....

The log booms are all linked together and tied off to shore, and each boom is wrapped in cables. Occasionally a boom will get separated from a tethering cable from a storm, or whatever. I usually cut through a wide spot in the booms if I'm on that side or paddle away from the booms closer to shore in the break water. The eagles, herons, and otters like the log booms, so better wildlife viewing closer to the booms on that side of the lake. Always that chance that a cable(s) could break, but I feel safer closer to those booms than when I was actually on a logging crew. Everyday was a shit show.

We headed up to the Southern Sierras for a few days recently to get out of the smoke of the Thomas Fire that's been raging here in the 805...had some gorgeous flatwater paddling with Fall colors, big sky views, and mountain back drops...sheet glass conditions...trunking it...left the quad plus StubNub fin setup in and still had great glides on 9' and 9'2" WD Stoke SUP models...
Less than 10 days until the official start of Winter...no snow yet...so, we experienced comfortable air temps in the 70s...water temps in the 50s...nice sunsets...lots of stars at night...clean air, great food, and fresh microbrews...etc...
-
Nice place to flat water paddling. Gorgeous photos too. And I've also found I too like a quad plus Stubnub setup works well for me on our area lakes where I live for flat water paddling.
Thanks for sharing.

Aloha Night Wing,
We have a couple of friends that were evacuated because of the fire in Santa Barbara who saw those pics and wanted to check it out...so we went back up to the Southern Sierras with them for a few more days of flatwater paddling fun...
I'll be putting a vid clip together of this adventure...but, in the mean time...here's some stills...
Mike even paddled his 7'11" Hammer on the river without fins and it tracked pretty good for him as he's a pretty good whitewater paddler from Idaho...
-
Nice pics Wardog...looks like a fantastic choice for a paddle trip!
Trade ya :) .... these were taken last Friday, Dec 15, 2017.... not even winter yet ???
-
@ WarDog
Wow! Not just one trip up into the Sierras, but TWO trips. And a second nice set of still pictures. I took a nice look long at those pictures looking for some details and one particular did.
The one showing the quad +1 fin setup on top of the other sups caught my eye. I'm "guessing", from looking at the photo, the five fins in size were: (2, 5"), (2, 4") and (1, 2.25" stubnub). Might have been the one Deb was paddling.
Thanks for sharing the photos. 8) Those photos for me are "eye candy". ;)
-
Adding a stubnub to a quad does not make it a quad +1.
To be a quad +1, the center fin would have to be considerably larger than the other four.
Calling it a five fin set up would also be misleading.
The board in the photo is simply a quad +nub.

Aloha Rick,
YIKES!!! That looks freakin' frigid...
Ironically, your feet were probably warmer than mine before I put booties on...
Felt like an ice cream headache in my toes when I paddled barefoot...the river temp gauge varied from 40* F - 42* F...pure snow melt water...
I think that it could have taken your breath away if you fell in...it helped that air temps were at 78* F, so the sand heated up nicely...

Aloha NW,
All of the boards that we paddled there had a quad +1 fin setup option...the two Stokes that Deb and Janine paddled were running 4"/5" quad + 2.25" StubNub...

Nice pics above.
Missing the sun. A few pics from this summer on a day trip up the Kootenay river to the confluence of the Slocan River.
-
Aloha robon,
That is some gorgeous water on the Kootenay...
I just put this clip together from our latest trip up to the Kern River...this stretch is pretty docile...but, the Kern River is world famous for it's class IV, V, and V+ whitewater runs...
https://youtu.be/ReOVUM5TBIE
In fact, it's home to Rebecca Giddens, who won the SUP event at the 2015 Payette River Games in Idaho on the women's side...while, Mo Freitas won the men's event using my One World model...
Rebecca was a 2004 Olympic Silver Medalist in Athens, 2002 World Champion...and, many time National Champion and U.S. Team Member...her and her husband also own and operate Kern River Brewing Company...always good for an aprés SUP party...;-)

@ WarDog
Enjoyed your Kern River Valley sup video. Beautiful place to paddle. And I noticed the 5 fin setup for your paddling session on the river.
When I receive my One World, I'm first going to take her for a flat water paddling session with a one large single fin. Then head on back to my launching point, replace the single fin with a 5 fin setup and take it for a second paddling session. This will give me some info comparison wise for the two fin setups.
BTW, thanks for taking the time to make the video and share it here on the Zone.

Aloha NW,
Here's a vid clip with drone footage and several other POV angles of standup paddling on Lake Isabella this past December week...all of the boards are between 7'11" & 10'...

BTW, thanks for taking the time to make the video and share it here on the Zone.
Gracias...it's something that I enjoy doing when I have some spare time...
I actually started editing and streaming original video content on the internet back in the 90's...then along came You Tube...;-)
In addition to these last couple of vid clips...I have over 150 other vid clips on my You Tube channel...

@ WarDog
Loved the 360 degree panoramic view of the lake. Gorgeous weather combine with a calm, flat like glass water condition.
From looking at the sups on the ground in the video, it appears to be: 1 Hammer, 2 Stokes and 1 Mahalo Shaka. Looks like Deb paddled both a Stoke and the Mahalo Shaka. Since I'm the curious type, if you don't mind, could you ask Deb which one of the two sup models she preferred when paddling Lake Isabela?
Thanks for providing another "eye candy" video. :)

New to the forum, and relatively new to SUP’ing, but loving it so far. We bought basic inflatable boards for our starter set, so far so good.

Thanks! We were in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. The inflatable boards are perfect for traveling. The rentals were $25 per hour, and that didn’t make sense to us.

That’s really interesting. I was wondering if you had any difficulty with the airlines traveling with your inflatable boards?
My wife and I are going to the Cook Islands in October and I’d like to take my inflatable. My only concern is that the bag my inflatable transports in measures approx. 38” x 16” x 14”. Added together this is 68” and Air New Zealand has a limit per bag of 62 linear inches. I note that they have a separate category for sports equipment and I just sent them an e-mail this morning asking about this. I am thinking I will be exempt from the 62 linear inches because it’s sports equipment, but at this point I’m not sure.
I really don’t want to get to the airport and find out they won’t allow me to take my board, or that they are going to charge me some exorbitant price for taking it. I already have to pay an extra $160 each way because this is my second bag. I would prefer not to have to pay even more money because it’s oversized, or my worst nightmare that when I’m at the airport a couple of hours before the flight they tell me I can’t take it with me.
-
I don't paddle a lot of flat water, but this is more of a fun commute to the surf.
I'll paddle with my GF from New Brighton beach up to Privates, cruising right along the cliffs the whole way.

@Quickbeam, we didn’t have any issues - just some curious TSA and customs agents about how the boards worked, were they easy to travel with, etc. Each bag/board weighed in at 32.5 lbs and was not classified as oversized. We flew Southwest who always seems to be a bit more lenient than other airlines.
Sounds like you have an incredible adventure coming up.

Thanks 4RN4FN,
I appreciate your feedback. As for our trip, we are very much looking forward to it. We’ve been to Rarotonga before - three times in fact, but it’s been almost 20 years.

Because of this site's software and how it was designed, you won't see any pictures in the Preview. I'm not a fan of this action either.
