[Walmart has been selling these for a few months now. Don’t know if they are just sold locally, or if they are at other Walmarts. They didn’t have any specks listed anywhere other than on the price sticker. 10’-$609. 9’3”-$580. They look like decent boards at a good price for someone just getting into SUP.
-
You would think they could come up with a better name.. ;D

Really? Poi Pounders. Really?
"Honey, I'll be gone for an hour, I'm going to go pound poi."

watch for next weeks special on our new line at Biglots- "sand pounders"

Walmart?!?!? “…as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened.”
I can just see those going thru the DC in Bentonville.... "Zeke, what the heck are these?!??!"
-
I'll never forget back in the early 60's when I was just a young teen, we went into Montgomery Wards in San Diego, for school clothes, and they had some surfboards in there.
I remember pointing out to my younger brother the small ridge that ran all around the perimeter of the boards and saying to him, "see, this is how you can tell it's a pop-out".
Those boards were called "Surf City". ;D
I always looked, but I never saw any of them in the water.
-
Just ask for Poi Royale at any Walmart in Paris? ;D
-
At first glance, the boards don't look all that bad. The wood veneer decking was not what I would have expected when I opened a thread titled Walmart SUP. However, I'd pay 500 extra to avoid the stigma of being someone who "rides a Poi Pounder." Still, who here isn't just a wee bit er...curious... to see how they work?
No offense to our Chinese trading partners, but I'm really trying to buy American this Christmas. At the risk of being labeled a boutique snob, I kind of like talking to shop owners about the shape and what they were aiming for when they were making the board. I doubt that Skippy in Isle 17 can give me anything useful on a board's volume or rocker.
By the way, did you ever see what they called their paddles?
-
I believe the matching paddle line is sold under the name of "Coconut Clubs"...or was it "Macadamia Mallets"?
Not sure about the boards, but just saying "Poi Pounder" makes me feel dirty...
-
I saw some of the comments about "Poi Pounder" before I saw the photos, and thought people were kidding.
Would these boards be good in mushy conditions?
-
I doubt these boards have enough volume to float the average Walmart shopper.

;D
But if they go to Costco, they can get a 3-pack for the same price (although might be knock-offs) and just leave them shrink-wrapped together for triple the volume.
-
Walmart's going to get a lot of returned boards when people realize that after a couple of hours on a Poi Pounder, you start going blind.

I think you "misunderestimate" the Walmart's shoppers creativity. One board on each foot you know.

When I was a kid in So. California I remember Sears also selling pop-outs. I think they even listed them in their catalogue.

Looking up close, I don’t think it’s really wood veneer. It looks like it’s just “printed” on like fake wood furniture.
Really? Poi Pounders. Really?
“Poi Pounders” is a brand that’s been around locally (Hilo) at Walmart for a long time, mostly body boards, leashes etc., and then jumped on the SUP bandwagon fairly recently.
-
I thought the veneer was real as well until I looked more closely. If you look at the knot pattern, you will notice they are in fact identical patterns, one is just a little higher than the other. So, fake wood veneer.
-
I'm not so sure its fake veneer. I'm not seeing identical patterns, similar sure. but that's fairly typical with veneers. Even commonly a design feature....not that i think Walmarts Poi Pounders are book matching their $600 SUPs... ;D
-
This post is funny. ;D
-
I guess the "woodlike" veneer is to fool old sods like me, who don't have the sense to compare grain patterns.
After seeing shows like Hoarders, American Pickers, Storage Wars, and Pawn Stars, this post seems like Walmart is just adding fuel to a stupid trend in modern society: accumulation. How much useless stuff do we really need? Low quality volume retail is burying us in our own stupid shopping habits. You start to wonder how many of these do they need to sell to justify the production line? I wonder how long these boards were designed to last? Who here hasn't purchased something at the bargain price just to be pissed that they didn't spend double the price on something that was a quality item and lasted longer than one use?
Whoa...total mental sidetrack. I think I need some more poi and a nap.

I've seen other cheap China made SUP boards that look like wood but are actually a big sticker..
I could not pick it because it looks very real and with no repeating patterns like a cloth print.

grain pattern regularity and repeats etc could signal a man-made veneer, as
is commonly used by the good people at Cobra: they make Thai hardwood cut-
offs into pulp, dye it whatever (you want Teak?), and press it into sheets
using a synthetic glue. Real wood fibers, but better, because of a more durable
glue, and because the little capilaries are discontinuous, so the product
does not respond as much to changes in temperature and humidity as the
"natural" veneer does. Good stuff, and good for the environment, too!
-
the tech decks in the right side of the first pic will probably last you longer than those sups ;)
-
The knot patterns on both boards are identical to one another. Exactly the same, not similar. Look at the top left area of the deck pad on both. You will see the same 4 knots in the same locations. The logo is on a slightly different patch of the veneer on both boards which throws you off a bit.
There are about 10 knots major knots that can be found in the same spots on both decks. Its fake wood. They sure do look nice though! Without the 2 boards being next to each other it would be almost impossible to tell they were fake.

coming soon Wal Mart boards with Nike-Target logos!

But you'll never see Adidas boards in any line-up, because of the "Three stripes and you're out" rule.

Well Walmart is now doing to the Sup Industry what it has done to 1000's of other companies in the USA . Kung Hei Fat Choy (that's happy new year in Chinese) :'( just released in time for Christmas & our New Year. By buying products from Walmart you just support this carnage , but I'm just as guilty as anybody by buying a 140L Igloo Marine series cooler from Walmart in Kauai this year for $91 (plus tax) which retails for over $400 here in Australia. With our dollar above parody at the time that's a super good deal.
Damned if you do ... broke if you don't. I don't know the answer.
-
I think I'll buy one. :)

When I pull into the parking lot my blood pressure goes up knowing I'll see this inside, sorry about the hijack but-http://www.curiousread.com/2010/02/wal-martians-odd-pics-from-walmart.html

I think the Walmart paddles are called monkey spankers
