Title: New Starboard Open Ocean pics.
Post by: DavidJohn on April 07, 2011, 07:54:57 AM
Today I paddled the new 14' Starboard Open Ocean board and took these pics.. and also some pics showing it next to my 14' Glide so you can see just how different these two boards are.

Sorry to re post them here but I think they belong in this section.. We hope to get a good down-winder this weekend (the forcast is looking good) so we'll get some more pics and vid and see how it goes compared to the 14' Glide.

I'll get my friend with his new 14' Fanatic to come along and we can compare all three..  ;D

The new starboard looks great. Really looking forward to that 3 way comparison review. I wish one of you guys had a SIC 14' to go along.

So what did Jonathan think of it? I saw Keith Baxter with a new Starboard the other day that looked like a brushed carbon version of that. Probably for Connor.

DJ,
Did you get a sense of how much the Starboard weighs?

Hey Shawn look again at the bottom shot you refer to, after the drain holes there is a sharp rail, it's just tucked under so far you don't expect it to be there - something like an inch further under the board than last years version....

Weight is 25 ish I'm going to have to weigh again the digital scales weren't behaving too well.

Bill this is actually the brushed carbon, used white paint instead of grey this year and didn't sand through but it's a really thin coat of paint so you just see hints of carbon.

I did a more detailed review under another post in Gear Talk, sorry about the double posts, blame DJ and PT Woody. Thanks for the photos guys - have to hand it to DJ for SUP enthusiasm, I'm convinced he was more excited about my new board than I was. Fantastic to have someone so passionate to keep the gear 'buzz' going ;D

Hey paddledaddy, I had an SIC F14 for a year on Maui but I guess you are referring to the X14, compared to the F14 it feels like way less board, lighter and nimbler feeling. The sensation of standing in the board rather than on the board really changes things. Don't get me wrong, I loved the F14 and now have an F16, must admit I'm  struggling to even come up with comparison points - have to think about it! If we get the big conditions forecast tomorrow it will all make more sense. Partially it's difficult to compare because the Maui conditions are just so different to what we have at home, I am sure that the Starboard is much much easier for me to get onto small messy chop than the F14 or F16 are, but if I was doing a Maliko with 10 or even 20' faces at this stage I'd want to be on one of the F boards.

One of the really nice things I found with the Race 14 yesterday was how relaxing it felt to surf, just super easy to trim and redirect, if that translates to bigger swell it will really be something!

A few more pics of this board for anyone not sick of it yet.  ;D Some of these feature a comparison with the superseded 14' Surf Race.

In that last pic... is that a shadow or is it a really big fish tracking dinner?

Hey--I was going to make that same comment about the shadow!

PT Woody--I especially like seeing these comparision photos with the Surf Race--very interesting to see the small changes and to analyze why they were made.

I really like the idea of those sharp rails tucked under so far. If it works right the rounded sides beyond it would give less resistance at slow speeds and the flat bottom to hard edge transition takes effect when the board planes out giving it something to push against. Hmm, maybe that Sysmanki guy knows a thing or two.

I think we're all gonna have a lot of boards. Maliko rewards certain design elements, though you can have a great run on a long surfboard. Flatwater, small swells, chop, the steep swells in the Columbia River. I like where Starboard is going with this board.

Because you stand so low on this board it is very stable but when you tip it right it feels like you move left.. Tip it left and it feel like you move right.. Sorta like a hammock swing motion and I found that very off putting at first.. I'm sure you'd get used to it.

Also.. There's a real hump in the board down the center of the standing area.. It doesn't look like much in the pics but it feels huge when you're used to a flat deck.. I'm sure it's there to add some strength and add with drainage in the standing area.. The old SurfRace felt like you're standing in a puddle.. This one drains away very well but that hump feels odd when you go to move your feet to a more surfing stance.. I'm sure you'd get used to it.

You nose doesn't tend to go 'boof' as you hit chop with it like the SurfRace did but it still does it a bit and that also feels a bit odd when you're used to the pointy piercing type nose like the Glide.. I'm sure you'd get used to that also..  :D

I like that they have wrapped the deck grip over that rail on the top because if you're used to putting your paddle across the deck and pushing on your paddle slightly as you stand you will not damage the board or paddle like you would with the SurfRace.

I like the soft rails because the board can move sideways when hit with side chop without the board having that catchyness or trippyness feeling and they also suck water around the rail stopping that skipping feeling when carving a turn when planning and when going straight they release off the edge to allow early planning.

We have 30 knots here today so we will see how it goes on our down-winder.. I'll use me 14' Glide and wear my Go Pro on my helmet..  ;D.. and I'm sure we'll be swapping boards along the way.

Bill it's hard to be sure but I think the boards in the video are the original version of the Surf Race 14, you can see the raised rails running right to the back of the board. Also the nose looks fuller as per the old one.

But who knows its just as likely Connor and Bart could be on prototypes.

We did the downwinder yesterday, 20 to 30 knots and quite small waves, I'll post some video when I get through editing it. This board absolutely rocks, light enough to effortlessly accelerate onto the waves, long enough to maintain fantastic glide and really fun to surf, I felt like I was cheating yesterday, the thing maintains such a high speed it is in a totally different league of speed and fun to anything I've ever paddled before. Excited....you bet!

Hi DJ, I can't remember if it was this thread or the other one but I thought you or Johnathan promised us a 3 way comparison between the new Starboard, the Naish, and the Fanatic 14. The videos were great and I've got my order in for a Starboard Coast Runner so it's really just fuel for my addiction at this point.

I would like a review of the SIC Kevlar Bullet in Australian sidechop conditions, a review of the Bark Dominator (14) (double carbon) in light sidewind conditions, a review of the Ohana 18 in open ocean conditions WITHOUT pictures of it blowing away into the distance (from the water... riderless of course).

Other than that, I am good.

Thanks DJ!

Tim when you say sidechop, do you mean 90 degrees to the Bullet?  And how strong?  My experience is pretty good with up to about 60degrees ... from behind.  And it seems easier in stronger side winds than light side winds because the board slips off well and finds the groove.  Light side winds make me sea sick.  It's a hollow board so it does better as it points downwind... but I guess that's in the Duh category to say that.  My experience is with Mark's original kevlar Bullet.  From the vids I've seen from DJ it looks like they go in stuff we like to go in.  These race boards are all about surfing in the open ocean between either side of 30 degrees off of straight downwind.

Can someone please share some dimensions? I am looking for a tail thickness measurement from Open ocean race board. Measured from 6" bottom of tail outwards to fin box. I want to compare dimensions with Naish 14' need them for reference points. Aloha

This is the only one of these boards that I know of and I don't think they are in the US yet.. When I see Jonathan next I'll measure it for you but I'm guessing it's about the same as (if not very close) to the Glide.. btw.. Jonathan is in Maui right now and about to paddle the Maui to Molokai race tomorrow.

What do you mean by.. "Measured from 6" bottom of tail outwards to fin box".. ?

DJ,

Starting point bottom of tail to 6" upwards towards fin box. Or at 6" width of tail measure from deck to bottom equals the thickness I am looking for. Mahalos

Naah, I have bought a second Open Ocean so I can train against my kids and friends without there being any technological advantage, kind of like match racing you know?

Due to our low period swell, the Open Ocean is the best board for here in Perth, Western Australia, I absolutely love it and have paddled it ever second or third day so I'll be heading offshore pretty soon to have a crack at downwinding as that's my ultimate goal.

It is a brilliant shape, no doubt. I have last year's Elite Race 14' which is a lot of fun but the quantum leap to this new board is heart breaking. Oh well, I now have the current 12'6 Race to at least ease the pain.

Probably, likely. I rode star sail boards for years, so I know that they always come up with something better, as opposed to the rebadging process (they call it technical refinement) some of their competitors seem to be happy with.

These 14'0" Open Ocean's will keep me going for two years, then I'll be up for two new ones.
