Can i swap handle/ shaft in this Kialoa Paddle?
« on: March 30, 2017, 06:24:24 AM »
I picked up a kialoa adjustable yesterday for cheap. I intend for it to be a backup/ friend paddle. I did not realize until i got to the guys house that it is a carbon/ fiberglass blade, and an aluminum shaft. It was still a good deal so i went with it. It is pretty heavy and i am wondering if i can get a new shaft to make it lighter. Is it hard to change out?

That is one seriously ugly paddle. I hope it was a GREAT deal. You'll have to do a lot of fussing to swap in a shaft, not many companies sell them and of course the diameter needs to be right and the shaft can't be tapered like KeNalu shafts are, so those are out. I'd keep it to loan to people you don't trust with anything good. There are a lot of those aluminum shaft paddles on the bottom. If they get a little water in them they go down and stay down. Good place for them.

Is that the 8.75 or the 9 inch garden weasel?

It's way faster than the garden variety.

I wish i had extra carbon shafts laying around to upgrade my yard equipment! I guess that just comes with the territory of many years paddling. I suppose i will just keep my ugly paddle as is and hope i never have to use it myself. Its funny because i found an old post on Seabreeze from David John from 2009 and he was stoked about this paddle at that time. Innovation changes perception.

At the time, it was state of the art.  Dave Chun is clearly one of our sports great pioneers.

2009? That was a long was from state of the art then. Aluminum shafts were always on cheap paddles. Try that thing and let us know how it feels. I remember them. I don't need to go back there.

I would at least like to think that it was one of the top 100 best, aluminum-shafted paddles available in 2009. ;D

Hey, I'm not one to talk about state of the art, I'm still sporting a Kialoa Shaka Puu in the surf.
