Naish Mad Dog line
« on: December 28, 2016, 01:38:20 PM »
Hey,

Does anyone have experience with the Naish Mad Dog line? I think the specs are looking pretty good. I am specifically looking at the 8'6''....I guess it depends a bit on how my new years resolution turns out.

Here is the board: http://www.naishsurfing.com/product/mad-dog-86-carbon-pro/

Looks like a good idea.  The original Hokua's were too tippy for many average riders (including me) and the x-32's were too wide and sluggish.  It's possible that those mad dogs will offer the best of both worlds.  Buy one and give us a report!  :)

Lucky for me my Achilles is still not healed...but yeah I might try that. My all time favorite board was the hokua 9'0'' but I see the benefit of a tad wider board for more bumpy conditions..and also since I get out a lot less now :-)

I had the Hokua 7'3 X 28  105L   and found I was working too hard to stay upright and not having enough fun.  Tried a friends X32 and found it to be easy and comfortable, but fairly low performance.

No expert here, that's for sure....but it looks like a Sunova Skate to me with some similar dimensions minus width - I think the Skate is wider which probably makes it more stable.  Might be worth a comparison(???)

No I don't think so at all. Looks like a completely different outline.

Hey what's up with Naish's Maximun rider weight information on the web site?

The Mad Dog Model says Max rider weight of 230 pounds at 29" wide with volume of 121 L .

The  9'6" Quest model says Max rider weight of 200 pounds at 32 1/2 wide with volume of 170 L.

Naish clearly doesn't care about heavier riders like myself who look at the widths and volumes of the larger performance boards.

Mad Dog Model
8'6" / 259.1 cm
WIDTH
29" / 73.7 cm
THICKNESS
4 3/4" / 12.1 cm
WEIGHT
19.4 lbs / 8.8 kg
VOLUME
121 L
MAX RIDER WT.
230 lbs / 104 kg

Quest Model
9'6" / 289.6 cm
WIDTH
32 1/2" / 82.6 cm
THICKNESS
5" / 12.7 cm
WEIGHT
25.4 lbs / 11.5 kg
VOLUME
170 L
MAX RIDER WT.
220 lbs / 100 kg

The Skates tail is way wider, which makes it a completely different board, even though the tail shape looks similar.

I suspect the discrepancy between the Quest and Mad Dog has to do with the target group. The Mad Dog is for advanced surfing big dudes, the Quest is more of an intermediate board. Honestly, if you know enough to judge dimensions and volume, are you really looking at manufacturers weight recommendations?

Looks like a pretty nice board, but the 3D view on the web site is awesome.

Quest is nuts if they feel max weight for a 170l board is 220lb...or their board weights like 75kg haha. I am assuming they messed up a 320lb. That said, I would hate to be the board company that builds for that size since it brings with it a slew of other dynamics.

Traditionally Naish has underrated the weight capacity or the boards. My x32 7'10'' performed best when I was over the weight limit. I rode some of their board 30lb over what they recommended as max weight. I would probably go for the Size under for the Mad Dog board.

I agree the 3d view is awesome because you get an outline and you get to look at the rocker. It is a bit harder to see the bottom shapes and rails, but there is a lot more info when you can turn the board around.
