Mavericks was Pumping
« on: February 05, 2016, 06:45:33 AM »
I checked my favorite spot but it was overwhelmed not necessarily by size but by sell direction and period.  It was closing out at 12 feet.  So I peddled my bike a little further and found this scene.

Keeping it SUP related.  I paddle out at sunrise and come to the edge of mushroom rock.  2 jet skis are swirling around me caddying two surfers.  They are doing 360's trying to get through the initial shorebreak.  I wave and do my little engine thing and get out with dry hair.  A dry hair paddle out on a big day is rare, or maybe it wasn't that big. Kind of a bad sign.

I get out and count 4 guys in the lineup surrounded by 14 vessels including 10 jet skis, 4 big boats and 2 drones already flying @ 8 am.  Since the tide was high'er this was a surprise.

I was greeted by my friend Andrew, from his boat Get Wet Too, and a cast of ~ 7 people he has on his whaler.  Eventually some burly looking Rob Machado character with dread locks hops off his boat on a SUP paddles right past me to the bowl and then pulls off this move.

I could see his takeoff from the shoulder and it looked pretty vertically stunning before he disappeared down the precipice.  The guy had stones.

Great report Beasho. I watched from dry land here in SC on the cam and it's cool to get the inside scoop.

I saw a picture posted of Kai Lenny one his first day at Mavericks and also a video with Jeff Clark saying is was one of the top ten days out there ever.

Funny, this morning I heard on the news that the reason they didn't hold the contest was that services were spread too thin because of the upcoming Super Bowl.

Asked them to wait until Monday. They just don't get it.

Gee, the commentary was so warm and fuzzy:

Anonymous 02/05/2016 06:08 AM
There is so much truth here written about the SUP Kooks. It was cool when Laird was the only guy. Now its just a global clown party. That said, great article and fotos!

Alan 02/05/2016 05:45 AM
@ Butt Pirate..You sound close-minded, egotistical and angry. It's so tiresome to hear complaining negative rants like yours...and then to hide behind "I guess I respect my fellow surfer"...spare me....Waves can be surfed on any equipment and people can be "kooks" or dangerous on any type of board.

Richard Inyosista 02/04/2016 10:52 PM
I cant believe how many clowns are sticking up for the SUPs. Let's get something straight kooks there are plenty of guys paddling on real boards. Take your paddle and over sized POS back to the pond and learn how to surf again.

Hey Kev Beach, SUP is the lamest thing ever to hit the water, my friends and I have kicked them out of our local breaks. Taking off on a wave 100 ft out from everyone else is pathetic especially if it's big Mavericks. As far as your boyfriend Laird goes, please, that kook almost ruined surfing with the jet ski. He can keep paddling the English Channel while all the men with balls paddle Jaws!!!

Too funny, and I seem have blown a wad of money on fake boards.  Oh well, luckily they work.

Thanks Beasho for showing us a peak into the Maverick's inner world.  So does any one know who this charger is?

This short vid starts with a beautiful wave from P Mel and the second wave is the unknown sup charger from the cam footage.

"The guy on the SUP that's rippin, should be Kealii Mamala."

And he isn't catching the wave from outside the pack, he's shoulder to shoulder deeper in the bowl!!

I was never so angry in my prone days... Seems everyone of those guys has zero clue about what surfing actually is??

Maybe they should take up cage fighting instead? Or Football hooliganism?

Put them on a board at 59 degrees north and then see what they can do.. :D

59 degrees north, you're practically in the Gulf Stream Brah! ;D

On a serious note, localism seeks to divide based upon any perceptual differences.  It's nothing but bigotry in its purest form.

The latest FUROR is that the Superbowl Killed Mavericks.

People this is the "Superbowl of Surfing."  "It's just jaw dropping," said Clark about the giant waves," It was massive. It was so good."  So good, Top 10 EVER!  You can't make this stuff up.

So funny watching the kooky surfing going in the background on from 1:14 on.

Here they are talking about perfect 30 foot Mavericks surfed by legends and the news crew is filming warbly shoulder high Princeton Jetty.

More at eleven.

"Everytime Kealii Mamala comes to Mavericks, he charges with an intensity that empresses me. Tow, Paddle, stand-up, is there anything he doesn't know how to do?" - Doug Acton

I was impressed to him paddle over to the lineup and within 10 minutes just charge it from the outer bowl.
