Anyone surfing with a Werner small-blade paddle?
« on: June 07, 2015, 08:17:01 AM »
Want to go shorter with my surf paddle and am looking at the Werner small blade (6.75 inch) ... Now have the medium (7.25 inch, with a little bit longer blade). Does anyone have experience with the small blade in the surf? Pros? Cons?
I'm 175 pounds, strong paddler, experienced surfer.
Thanks in advance.

Hi abmatt

I use the Soul, S, cut slightly overhead. I weight close to 180, on surfing gear and hydro pack. Surf a 10', 140 L, longboard style sup.
This paddle is sturdy, light enough and the small blade makes catching waves easy, and once surfing, it's easy to handle. I don't use the paddle much while surfing, it's my style.
Also, it's great for the longer paddle out to the reefs, with the ocassional upwind grind back.

I have used many Werner paddles,(Fuse L, M Grand Prix M, Nitro M) so far, finally downsizing to this one, with the best results.

I switch back and forth between the Kenalu Wiki and the (I guess) older small Werner Nitro. I measured my blade at it's widest and it's 7 1/16". Love them both. I'm down to head high with the Kenalu and prob an inch or so over on the Werner. Oh and, I'm same weight as you and a longtime paddler. Love the smaller blades for my old shoulders.

I Love the look of the Nitro S .  Just concerned about the shallow blade angle 7 degrees.  I'd prefer 11 or so.  Think I'm going to have to get one regardless and see how it works. Never heard of the company but they certainly have a respectable background.  Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Tautologies... Werner says the Nitro S is 16 oz.; the fiberglass Carve that I'm getting (I'm rough on my equipment) is 20.75 oz.

I borrowed a Nitro small and liked it so much am getting one. The high aspect narrower blade was more stable and I could paddle with a higher cadence. The shallow angle felt good!

A pleasure to help. Please let us know how it goes.

Try the Soul S. It's the one i have and not heavy at all at 19 0z. That said, it seems that the Blade on the Carve is flexier, which might mean relief to sore shoulders.

Yeah I also prefer oval shafts..even if I prefer smaller blades more....what other paddles would have that? I mean small blade oval shaft would be an absolute winner. Any ideas?

Quickblade V-Drive 81, not as small as some of the blades you guys are looking at but it's pretty small. You can get it with the oval tapered shaft but it's pricey.

kialoa Pipes is very close to my ideal paddle. I have one that I'm whittling on, i have it trimmed down to 7" in width. But I'm wanting to move away from the teardrop shape.   Wearner is on the right track.  I don't think I can reshape the bottom edge to the way I want without compromising too much.  But whatever, I bought two to carve up so I'll probably end up doing it anyway.  Europeans didn't invent surfing but they are crafty devils.  White Devils
