Red Paddle Co Surf Star 9'2 in small surf?
« on: March 16, 2015, 11:30:38 AM »
Anyone have any feedback on the Red Paddle Co Surf Star 9'2 in small surf?

I'm looking for an iSUP for longboard style small wave riding, something that can catch small mushy waves early and nose ride.

Hey Slap --

I have the 9'2" Red...  small waves are BIG to me :)
Review I did on here somewhere..

The 9'2" is great, but then again their 9'6 "ride" and 10'0 "surfer" look pretty nice also.
I like the 9'2" cause can fit it in my vehicle fully inflated.
Ask GreenWaterSports if he has ridden all 3 boards?

Long board style you may want to look at the 10' Surfer from 2014 (on sale now) or the 2015 9'8" Ride. With the 2015 9'8" Ride they basically took the nose of the 9'6" and the tail of the 10' for the ultimate surfing SUP for "small wave riding, something that can catch small mushy waves early and nose ride."

Yes the Ride 9'8 looks like a very nice shape for small waves but I was curious if the 9'2 might be better than it looks for them while being more versatile for bigger surf.

How does the old 9'6 Allwater compare to 9'2 SS and 9'8 ride?

SS. I've paddled the 2013 RedPaddle 9'2" in small surf and whilst not as good as my similar sized Hard board, it is fun and as an inflatable pretty impressive. The key issue is in the one I paddled the fins were the standard flexible PVC ones and so you lose traction in any hard turns. That means making smooth transitions which is still fun. The fins flex too much.

I've not tried the 10' in surf but I have taken one on a downwind... ;) http://youtu.be/PgvgQgCLuSg.

Yeah I had already watched that DW vid on the 10'0 and it looked like a lot of fun.

Have the materials changed year on year for the Red Paddle Co boards? I notice that the 10'0 x 30 surfer is listed at 27 lbs while the newer 9'8 x 31 is only 25 lbs. If they were the same material the 9'8 x 31 should weigh more as it's a larger area.

Is the old full blue Surf Star 9'2 any different from the 2014 or 2015 Surf Star?

Don't have much time on the 9'2". I prefer my carbon 8'5" Starboard Pro. I don't usually travel for waves, just travel with the 10'6". The 9'2" is more focused as a surfer with the narrower tail and nose. The 9'8" will catch smaller waves and earlier, but it is a trade off for performance in bigger waves or for smaller paddlers due to width. Of these board I've had the most time on the 10' Surfer and it's a great long board style wave rider. Cruising, drawn out turns, bit of walking up to the nose.

Year on year, the Red's have streamlined the layers, glue and deck padding to maximise strength, comfort and reduce weight. Each edition is getting progressively better in construction quality and performance.

The Surf Star as far as I know is much the same outline and rocker. Larger deck pad and kick pad for 2015. See the differences between 2014 and 2015 here with a little slider that shows both boards: http://greenwatersports.com/4379/a-quick-review-of-the-2015-red-paddle-co-92″-surf-star-inflatable-sup
