I've been using car door edge protector stuff on my paddle which works but as butt-ugly as anything I could do to it.  :P

Do you buy that RSP stuff by the foot? How much does it cost?

No.. you do not buy it by the foot..  :)

I think they cost about 30 dollars.. and for that you get two paddle guards like shown in my pics.

got rsp from ralph a few months ago--simply the best stuff, by leaps and bounds. plan to replace the naish tape on other boards, as soon as it wears a bity

i use bright yellow or orange 3m electrical tape on my paddles--to wrap the hot glue joint, and around the rim of the paddle. it's cheap and makes the paddle more visible in the water. lost a damned paddle a few weeks ago in RI--expensive mistake--5mm gloves and a good, cold pounding, and it was gone.

Is that good for an ABS blade like the naish makani? Or the ABS is good enough to protect the blade?

I'm not sure it has been discussed yet but some people put the tape they use to protect the edge of helicopter blades on their rails. You can buy it on Amazon by the roll: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=helicopter+tape&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Ahelicopter+tape

IMO the ABS edge on the blade is there to protect the blade more than the board.. so I'd use a paddle tape as well if you're after board protection..

I have got the rail pro for the board so I hope the abs of the paddle would be OK mainly for paddle protection

Thanks for updating us on that.

DJ, do you know if the rail tape they sell is now sold as  the standard version, or is the standard version still the shorter one, and the longer one is a special variant?

Hope that question makes sense....

I think it's called Jumbo paddle guard or something like that..

We get it here in 2 weeks so I'll let you know..

I've been told that it only comes in the clear/white color for now.

Guys
We love RSPro rail tape NOTHING better But...
a friend of mine (a lurker here on the ZONE) turned me on to a 3M Edge Guard relatively inexpensive goes on easy and LASTS!
I put it on ALL beginner paddles (Carbon) and it saves a lot

but for Rail tape nothing beats the RS products

We stock these and offer ZONER discounts...Do you need a picture of the boxes or can you take my word?

Two points from this discussion:

1. RSPro tape will eat away at your blade (and shaft) in time, unless you tape it, ABS or not. Run your fingers over it. It is like a cheese-grater.

2. I use car door edge protector. It works well, although RSPro rail tape will eventually eat it too (although not as fast as electrical tape). Electrical tape is still by far the cheapest solution. RSPro paddle tape is the most expensive. The choice is yours. Most people have abandoned using the thick black plastic edge protector these days, although probably for most non-racing people, especially surfing, it didn't affect performance much, and was totally bombproof. If you want the strongest and longest-lasting solution and don't mind the dirty looks from precious "experts" then it is still a viable option, especially for eg. rivers.

Yup, and $10 buys enough car door edge protector to do 4 or 5 paddles!

Been using the RSP tape on my SUP's for several years. Be sure to use the wider (Jumbo) if you have a race/touring board with the thicker rails. I also use it to protect the catch area on my surf ski. and under where my heels go on the steering pedals.
On a paddle, start the tape in the middle (bottom of the blade) and be sure to pull tight when rounding the corners to insure a tight/smooth transition.
Suggest cleaning the area you plan to apply the tape to with Soft Scrub or a similar cleaner. This will allow the water to "wet" the area and allow easy adjustment during installation. Use a plastic spreader (like those used for auto body repairs) to smooth out bubbles.
While not cheap, this is an excellent product. Highly recommend it.
