Do you dry off your board before you put in in your board bag?
« on: January 18, 2015, 07:02:22 PM »
Just bought an awesome new 7'3 Naish Hokua from Ralph at Sup-Position today.  (Pics and review in a few days)  That's got me thinking.  I have always just shoved my boards salty and wet into the board bag and not thought much about it.  Lazy, no question.  Should I not do that with my pretty new Naish?  Should I dry it?  Rinse it off even?  How does it affect a board?

I am in freshwater.  I just toss it in the bag but don't zip all the way.

At least with a new Naish you don't have to worry about yellowing.

It refers to a horse.

Salt water is hard on anything metal. Even stainless can eventually corrode. Not much metal on a SUP except fin screws. Anything permeable (like a deck pad) can mold or mildew. But that is only a problem if you put it away for months wet. I always rinse all my gear in fresh water (a habit from windsurfing which does have lots of metal parts), but never dry it. But I just chuck it in the van, no bag.

I wouldn't worry about it. I don't use a bag though. I like to have her in plain sight so I can fondle and look at the curves between sessions.

I don't and I really should do something. My board often had mud or leaves on it. If I don't rinse them off, they stain the board. Which had happened.

If you put a board away wet and leave it in a fully closed bag the pad can get moldy and start to stink and it's not easy to get rid of the smell.  We had someone bring in a skunky used board like that to our shop.  We had to scrub the pad with simple green and dry it in the sun and it still smelled a bit afterwards.  I'm not too worried about rinsing my boards unless they have a rudder system.  As mentioned, metal parts should always be rinsed well as soon as possible.

I only use my board bags for long travel. I rinse my board off so the salt water doesn't drip on my car and eat the paint. I store most of my boards on racks. A few sit on the floor in half zipped bags. I don't typically have more than a 10 min drive to the water, so I don't feel the need to use a bag.
It's not overhead to me!

Only use a board bag when transporting for a channel crossing  ;D.

But, with canoes, I've seen the paint develop serious blisters from storing amas or hulls in bags without drying them off. Plus it makes the bags stink. Someone that commented on this thread knows exactly what I'm talking about. Yeah, you, the guy with the big yellow Scorpius with paint acne.

I only use my board bag to store my other board bag in.

And outside of (apparently) horses, it's not a good idea to put away anything wet.  Inside of them, you can probably get away with it, since horses' insides are already wet.

For my SIC F16 I always rinse with fresh water due to the steering. Sometimes this is taking a garden hose to it while it is still on the roof of my car. I don't store it in a bag. My new SIC Bullet 14v1 came with a bag and if I have access to fresh water at the finish point I will rinse off, then towel dry before putting in the bag. If no freshwater I still towel dry. I'll do this until one day I won't. This is usually when the love fest begins to wain... But I think that is normal with most things.. Maybe not horses though...
