Kayaker Rescued
« on: June 11, 2014, 11:35:38 AM »
And I thought I was crazy for the time I paddled my kayak around one of the oil platforms 4mi offshore...

I can't imagine doing a crossing like that and depending on electronics to get you there, saying something like "oops, no electronics, better turn back". What did he need all those devices for anyway? Kind of dumb having apparently no back up or handheld units.

What did he expect to do in the big breaking seas. I hope he had something to prevent capsize.

Seems like a poorly planned voyage. I doubt he would have made it.

I can't imagine what my body would feel like after a months at sea being cramped in a kayak 24/7 and sleeping sitting up. I can't even take one hour in a kayak without my feet and legs going to sleep.

Reminds me of the voyages of Dr Hannes Lindemann in the 1950s . No electronics back then.

A few years ago while catching some decent waves in Narragansett RI (at the opening of the Narrows) I helped a Kayaker that was attempting to kayak-surf with a non-ocean type kayak. This guy was out of breath, getting pummeled wave after wave, didn't look like his life jacket was helping keep him afloat, and I could see the panic in his face and his wife and adult son on the beach waving there arms fanatically. I paddled over to the guy and basically helped him onto the front of my board, while sitting down I attached my leash to his underwater kayak (after I detached the leash from my leg and my board) and paddled him to shore while towing his cheapo kayak behind.

Not sure what this guy was thinking but I see way too many of these guys out in the break flopping around and flipping over...doesn't look safe or fun.

Major league dumb. Couldn't continue without his electronics?? Then he needs to stay within sight of land. Maroon.

Blame Ed Gillet. He managed to survive the California-to-Hawaii trip, barely.

What an idiot.  I tried the same thing a couple years ago and also failed several miles out due to electronics problems, but it wasn't my fault.  Some moron back at the marina unplugged my cord.

This guy had quite a bit of publicity, and it was his second try.  Quite a bit of planning went into his attempt, except one small non electronic detail.  Apparently, he forgot to bring a compass, didn't know which was east when he turned back.  Or it was too cloudy to see the sun.  Or maybe when they said "disoriented" they meant completely out of it, just hit the panic button.
